I’m going to be honest and say that I’m not a fan of actually making REAL snowmen.
Like, out of real snow.
It’s cold, it’s wet, and you have to bundle up in gloves and coats and eleventy pairs of socks to go out in it and honestly I do not perform well when I don’t have my full range of motion available. I mean really, did you ever see Mr. Miyagi doing roundhouse kicks in thermals, jeans, and four pairs of wool socks?
I am, however, a huge fan of snowmen in theory. Frosty the Snowman, snowman decor, snowman treats, I am all about it. They’re just so cute and round and can be used for any winter treat, not just Christmas.
So I decided to make some cute mini snowman cupcakes.
It was a good idea.
These are basically the same idea as the snowman treats I made for Parent’s Magazine (blatant name drop, no shame here) but I made them mini and added a body. They’re so easy to put together, and I really love edible cupcake toppers because anyone can do them and there isn’t tons of waste.
- You’ll need:
Cupcakes, baked and frosted (I use THIS recipe for buttercream)
Lollipop sticks (1 per cupcake)
Mini Oreos (2 1/2 per cupcake)
Chocolate Covered Mini Marshmallows (1 per cupcake…you can find them at Walmart with the regular marshmallows…they’re so cool!)
Several uncooked spaghetti noodles (totally optional)
Brown food coloring (only necessary if you’re using the spaghetti to make arms)
White almond bark
Black and orange food markers
Assorted sprinkles (I bought mine at Walmart)
**I used uncooked spaghetti for the arms. If you are going to be serving these to little ones where choking may be an issue–skip this step!! As you can see in the collage above, I made one with no arms and he is still totally adorable**
Rub some brown coloring over several pieces of uncooked spaghetti and set aside to dry.
Melt your almond bark according to package directions. Coat Mini Oreos in the candy and set aside on wax paper to dry. Once the Oreos are set, turn over so the flat side (where the chocolate set against the wax paper) is facing up. Using the melted candy, attach a lollipop stick to two of them so that it forms a snowman.
You’ll need half an Oreo for each hat, so separate enough Mini Oreos and place them frosting side up on a piece of wax paper. Using a dab of melted chocolate, place a Chocolate Covered Marshmallow on top of the Oreo to form a hat. Leave until the chocolate has set and the marshmallows are firmly attached.
Once the hats and the snowmen are set and firm, attach hats to the heads with a dab of melted candy. I found that this was easiest if I set the hats at an angle. Cuter, too!! You can place these in a styrofoam block or floral foam to set, or just gently set down on your wax paper.
Once the hats are firmly attached, insert the arms (if doing this step) in the sides of the body and draw faces and buttons with your food markers. Insert into frosted cupcakes, and garnish with sprinkles.
Here’s a close up of the armless guy:
See? Still totally cute.
So give the ol’ Snowman Cupcakes a whirl at your next party, or just take them with you to Walmart and pass them around the parking lot. These deserve to be shared.
