Oreo Spider Cupcakes
Please tell me I’m not the only adult ridiculously excited about Halloween.
It’s a whole holiday about eating candy and scaring the poop out of your children. Hooray!!
To celebrate, my friend Shelly and I are sharing a whole week’s worth of Halloween inspired treats!! We will be linking to each other all week, and on Friday we will open up a link party so you can link up your own.
Hopefully you’ll get plenty of inspiration. Halloween treats are my FAVORITE!!
I know that Spider Cupcakes are nothing new, but I had this idea for spiders whose legs draped the sides of the cupcake, and I couldn’t get it out of my mind.
I am really really happy with how these guys turned out!!
I used Red Velvet cake because it was a mix I had on hand (I think left from Valentines Day? ) but I ended up LOVING the contrast with the Electric Green frosting.
The spiders are a chocolate covered Oreo, so along with a cupcake, you get another yummy treat.
I covered the Oreos in chocolate almond bark, but you could easily buy Oreos that are already chocolate coated. You could omit the sprinkles that I used in that case, or just dip the very tops and coat in sprinkles.
Here’s a graphic on how I put these guys together:
Super duper simple, just use some melted chocolate to attach sugar eyes and rope licorice legs. Anyone can manage these, and they look really cool.
You can click the links below to see the exact materials I used (most you could probably find locally as well), and I’m including my recipe for buttercream frosting.
Electric Green gel food coloring
Chocolate Sprinkles (these are way better than those gross waxy ones at the supermarket)
Solid Black, Striped, or Chevron Cupcake Liners
**Be sure to pop over to Shelly’s site!! She made Halloween Cauldron Cupcakes!!**
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups (3 sticks) salted butter, slightly softened
- 1/3 cup heavy cream
- 5 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 TBS vanilla extract
- 3 TBS light corn syrup
Instructions
- In the bowl of your mixer, beat butter, heavy cream, and extract on low speed until blended. With the mixer on low, slowly add powdered sugar until just barely mixed in. Add corn syrup and beat on high for one minute. If frosting is too thick, add a bit more cream until desired consistency is reached. Fold in desired amount of coloring.
I have so many fun recipes and treats for this week — I hope you enjoy them!!
Have a great Monday!!

Anything that looks like something else on a cupcake always gets me! Whether it is creepy or crawly, I am sure these are only spider that I will welcome in my house
Totally adorable!
And yes…scaring kids is the best part of Halloween! ;)
Very cute, I noticed your buttercream is a different recipe. What does adding the corn syrup do in this case that you used it instead of traditional buttercream?
I like to add a bit of corn syrup to frosting when I’m using it for piping…it just helps it pipe smoother. You could omit it and add more cream, if you prefer :)
I love this guy! He is so cute!!!
I don’t think I could eat these, they are too CUTE! Love this idea!

These are great. I may use a less frosting and tuck the “legs” under the chocolate covered Oreo. I like the chocolate sprinkles idea, giving the spider the “hairy” look.
I`m jealous of all your creativity skills! I can`t see to think of anything Halloween themed desserts!
Love these! How did you get the green icing to stay so nice? I would love to know how you did that! I wonder if I could use regular white icing and food coloring.
