Black Forest Cupcakes
Weird Fact #3497 About My Husband: He will not eat anything with “cooked fruit” in it. This includes but is not limited to pie, pie filling, jam, and filled donuts. Also, banana Laffy Taffy, which I am fairly certain contains NO actual bananas, but I guess he doesn’t want to take any chances.
He WILL drink grape Kool Aid though, so there’s that.
Anyways.
These cupcakes are a big fat NO for him. HOW someone could turn away such a lovely dessert is beyond me (and only further proves my theory that he is an alien but whatever).
Jon David also refuses such cupcakes, but obviously, he’s half alien so it’s not entirely his fault.
I’m assuming that you live with normal humans who smile at the sight of such a dessert, so I faced rejection from my family in order to bring you these lovely Black Forest Cupcakes.
Also, that just meant more for me, which is always a bonus.
These are so gorgeous and impressive, but really simple to throw together.Black Forrest Cupcakes
INGREDIENTS
- Cupcakes:
- 2 cups flour
- 2 cups sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3/4 cup Dutch process cocoa powder (I used Hershey Special Dark)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 4 eggs
- 1 Tablespoon vanilla
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) salted butter, melted
- Whipped Cream:
- 2 cups cold heavy cream
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- Topping:
- 12 chocolate sandwich cookies, crushed
- Large can cherry pie filling
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Preheat oven to 350. Line 24 muffin tins with cupcake liners and set aside.
2. In the large bowl of a mixer, combine flour, sugar, salt, cocoa powder, baking soda, and baking powder. Combine with a whisk. Add eggs, buttermilk, and melted butter. Mix on low for 30 seconds. Scrape the sides of the bowl and increase mixer speed to medium — beat for 2 minutes. Batter will be thick.
3. Fill cupcake liners 2/3 full. Bake cupcakes 15 – 20 minutes or until tops spring back when lightly touched. Cool completely before frosting.
4. Place large metal mixing bowl in the freezer along with your mixer’s whisk attachment for about 5 minutes. Remove from freezer and add cold, heavy cream and powdered sugar. Beat on high until it forms a thick whipped cream — you should see the whisk leaving marks in the cream, but don’t let it get too thick…it’ll turn to butter.
5. Pipe or spoon piles of whipped cream on the cupcakes. Place cookie crumbs on a plate and holding cupcakes sideways, gently edge the whipped cream which chocolate crumbs. With the back of a spoon, make an indentation in the top of the whipped cream and fill with a spoonful of cherry pie filling.

Enjoy and have a happy Wednesday!!

Thanks for visiting my blog! I realize you could be doing more important things with your time. Like watching the news or washing socks. I hope you stay awhile. Much more fun than socks, I promise.

If you have extras I can come by and help you with them :) I’m no Alien!
and….well I agree Wednesday should be called Cupcake Wednesday and if that is the case I better get baking!
I guess I am an alien, also. :( I absolutely love fresh fruit, but I will not eat it in any way or form if it is cooked (I don’t like any of the items you listed for him either). Also, I feel like if I am going to eat dessert, there better be as much chocolate jammed packed into it as possible! I will sometimes eat raspberry chocolate things, but it is far and few in between.
I just want to say that all cupcakes need to have frosting piled up that high. Fact.
oh yes more frosting or whipped cream…the higher the better!
I kinda feel the same way as Jess on this one…but not quite as extreme…I mean, I would never turn a cupcake down ;)
HA! Amazing… I think all spouses have their weird things (except for us of course :-)) These cupcakes look magical!
I’m part alien as well. I LOVE fruit, but I don’t do cooked fruit. Apple Pie? yuck. I’ll stick to chocolate cake. However, chocolate and cherries are made for each other. I’ve never had black forrest cake because of whole cherry pie filling thing going on. But these look delish. I may have to try them. You know, I’ll sacrifice myself just for you. I’m awesome that way. :)
These are just beautiful!!
My 9 year old hates banana’s. Always has! She wouldn’t even eat baby food banana’s when she was a baby. She does however eat banana Laffy Taffy. Which reinforces the fact that banana Laffy Taffy for sure does NOT have real banana’s in it!
How could anyone not want to devour this! They are gorgeous :)
I’m an alien too. I’ll eat the occasional bite of apple pie and that’s it for cooked fruits. Fruits are supposed to be cold. Then again, I’m not a big fruit eater at all. Bring on the veggies!
Too bad you don’t live closer! We could share in all that goodness! I’m here at work thinking that I need some chocolate after looking at those. Thanks for all of your amazing-looking food. I always pin them and need to actually make some of them….maybe that will be dessert tonight :)
I have a friend who also hates cooked fruit. So weird!!
Hello! I love Your site, I’m Your reader since months. :)
I smiled a lot , reading this article, my boyfriend, and his whole family hate fruits in cakes, too. That’s too bad, because mine loves it, and if I bake something (we always share it), one family has a problem with it. “Fruits? Oh, no / No fruits? Why not….?” So I totally sympathize with You. :)
By the way, if You are interested, check my desserts, too on my site.
Have a very nice International Happiness Day today! :)
XO: Hajni
Hello!
Thanks to Hajni, it is likely, that i’ll follow Your blog.
Those are very good-looking (and I think tasty desserts) .
I never knew (and probably never will), how can anybody ruin such nice, mouth watering cake with fruits. :-)
Keep it up!
Gábor
Kristan — You have readers in Hungary! I think I’ve also seen comments from someone in Australia. Isn’t the World Wide Web wonderful?!!!!

HOLY HEAVEN!! Those are almost too much to bare…..must have.
No.1 These look gorgeous.
No. 2 I’m part alien so . . . sometimes I’ll eat cooked fruit, sometimes not. BUT. This is easily solved with these yummy cupcakes. Take a spoon, remove cherries, gulp down cupcake.
No. 3 Are you having any problems with Duncan Hines cake mixes? I have a box of the new mix that is smaller, i.e. 16.25 oz instead of the 18.5 oz they used to be. I see you’ve been using a home-made cake recipe that looks good and I’ll try it. Anyone out there having problems with recipes that worked with the old Duncan Hines but are giving them trouble with the new smaller version? (I only used Duncan Hines. Thought it was the best.)
I haven’t noticed or had any problems with the new Duncan Hines weight…but their brand has always been my favorite. Hopefully it still comes out as great as always. Sometimes if I don’t have a mix on hand, I like to just whip up a homemade version, and this is the same base recipe as the one I used on the Almond Joy cupcakes.
I’ve tried Pillsbury and Betty Crocker and always found I liked the Duncan Hines mixes . . . soooo much better. I’m going to make some cupcakes for Easter with the Devil’s Food Mix and see what happens. Maybe if I’m feeling especially energetic I’ll also make a batch of this recipe and do a taste test.
I too dislike cooked fruit but I love Banana Laffy Taffy and Banana Popsicles. However your cupcakes look beautiful.
These look wonderful! My guy will eat fruit in desserts but hates it in savory dishes! Heven forbid I make pork chops with apples or a salad with strawberries. Oh… men! Lol!
I don’t know how your husband can say no to these! All i can think is YES YES YES!
I. Love. These!!!!
Nice work girlfriend. Here’s hoping sweet Lucy girl is with you on the dessert front . . . more power to you :)
Thanks for sharing another killer recipe xo
these look great!
These look mighty wonderful, Kristan.
P.S. Your husband and Gabor should start a club.
I won’t eat fruit and chocolate together and I would never dream of letting a banana leafy taffy anywhere near me. The cupcakes are very pretty though and if I could surgically remove the cherries, I would happily eat one.
See, your husband isn’t really an alien, or maybe there are just more of us out there than previously thought. You’ll never know.
My husband is exactly the same – won’t eat anything with cooked fruit. I used to think it was the hot fruit, but he won’t eat cold fruit pies either. Ah well, more for me!
I happen to Despise yogurt with fruit in it. Like Despise with a Capital D! But these cupcakes look amazing and I would Devour, with a capital D upon being placed in front of my face!
The only time I eat cherries is when they are part of a pie or pie filling. These cupcake slook delicious and so pretty!
You can bribe me to do the dishes
with one of these!
How can he say, “no”?! When all I can think about is saying, “oh hell YES!” :D
ErMaGawsh! These look fantastic! How could anyone pass these up!? Although, I am totally with your husband when it comes to pineapple. All other fruits are fine in my book. :)
I just got lost in this cupcake’s eyes.
These babies will be waiting for me in heaven… I just know it! Great recipe!
AWWW… I just had diner and bam ! Im’ hungry again, just by reading your blog !
Your cupcakes look amazing!
Smile. Isn’t it funny what our husband’s wont and will eat? I know I would have a hard time saying no to these beauties! I’m so glad I found your blog this morning. Beautiful posts…and such a lovely family. Thank you for sharing!
I can’t imagine ever saying no to a cupcake to looks like that! But the whole “more for me” concept would ease the pain of their misguided rejection. :D
Wow! Now those are cupcakes. Just gorgeous.
Silly boys, chocolate and cherries are so good together!
I tried this recipe and it turned out to be the most delicious chocolate cupcake I’d ever tried before. Thank you for the great recipe
