Red Velvet Cake Batter Hearts
So, I am probably not supposed to talk about this, but my son kind of likes a girl now.
He’s 8. I want to cry.
I try to be cool about it, because as he gets older, I know it’s important that he feels like he can talk to me. But on the inside, I’m sobbing with snot running down my face. It’s true.
And because he is my son, and I love him, I try to encourage him to be sweet to this girl so that no other boy steals her. I mean…I’m not too keen on him having a lady friend, but the only thing worse is him suffering from a broken heart.
A week ago, he went to a skate party. And his love interest was there, so my husband and I gave him some cash to buy her a glow stick necklace.
As I watched him hand it to her, I suddenly noticed moisture on my face.
I was crying. And NOT tears of joy.
It’s illegal for second graders to get married, right?
Just checking.
Anyways. My very best blogging friend Shelly came to visit me this week.
And while she was here, we decided to do some baking. We ended up baking a whole week’s worth of Valentine’s Day treats!!
Is it too early for Valentines stuff?? Sorry. (Except I’m not)
These make great Valentines Day gifts. They’re also great for stuffing your face with when you need to eat your feelings.Red Velvet Cake Batter Hearts
INGREDIENTS
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 1 cup red velvet cake mix
- 1/2 of a 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
- 4 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 lb vanilla almond bark or candy melts
INSTRUCTIONS
1. 1. In a large bowl, combine dry cake mix, powdered sugar, sweetened condensed milk and melted butter until thoroughly mixed. You can use a wooden spoon, but I always end up using my hands. Cover with a damp paper towel to prevent mixture from drying.
2. Melt candy coating or almond bark according to package directions. Place a small amount in the bottom of each heart candy mold, enough to fill the mold about 1/3 of the way. Roll about a teaspoon of the cake batter candy into a ball and press into the candy mold. Spoon more melted candy on top and sprinkle with rainbow sprinkles. Place in the fridge to harden.
Notes:
I used THIS heart mold. I really loved the size and shape of it!!
I love using THIS to melt my candy. It melts it perfectly and keeps it warm so it doesn’t harden back up while I work.
Be sure to head over to Shelly’s site…she made Valentine’s Krispie Treats and they’re super cute!!
Enjoy and have a happy Monday!!

Thanks for visiting my blog! I realize you could be doing more important things with your time. Like watching the news or washing socks. I hope you stay awhile. Much more fun than socks, I promise.

Total illegal to get married in 2nd grade!!! The glo stick necklace made me laugh out loud!!! I so remember doing that for my boys!!! Don’t worry you won;t have to plan a wedding quite yet!!! LOL
These are so cute and look really delicious too! I can’t wait to see all the fun goodies you and Shelly baked up, sounds like a fun week!
Mmm…but no rainbow sprinkles on these. They’re too pretty!
omg, my son is 8, too! this can happen at eight? oh my gosh. that’s it. he getting locked in his room FOREVER now!
Oh Lord, when my little guy starts liking girls I’m going to lose it. Or bury myself under a mountain of these and eat my way out.
Love the cake hearts! I’m hoping they don’t let kids get married until they are at least 30+….Mine are 19 and 22! lol
Thanks for sharing and I look forward to seeing more of the goodies you talked about making!
My baby girl is about to turn 12 in March . . . she just went to her 1st middle school dance right before Christmas . . . makeup is next . . . I’m looking into my 1st try at Xanax. Why do they have to fly through all these stages so fast?
Your story made me tear up! You see, I have a little boy. He’s 3-1/2. He’s my only child & will always be my only child. So he’s kind of a big deal to me. He’s growing up WAY TOO FAST. He barely pauses to let me cuddle him for a few seconds. And the thing is, I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY don’t want to be one of THOSE moms….you know, the type who never wants their little boy to love another girl more than he loves his mama. Who feels like no girl could ever possibly be good enough for her precious baby boy. BUT…..I can’t possibly see how I will find it okay for my little boy to love another girl more than he loves his mama & I’m quite sure no girl could ever possibly be good enough for my precious baby boy! Is there therapy for this? Because I’m gonna need it. :*(
I so get you. I only have one child as well, a boy, he’s 8. he is my everthing. It’s just him and I against the world.
My friends call him my little husband and say I’m ruining it for the future girs in his ife because I cook what he likes – I like to say that he likes what I cook – and I say that whatever girl wants to win him over better be able to find her way around a kitchen. blindfolded. with one hand tied behind her back.
I’m gonna need therapy too.
Soo cute! I love the small hearts! :)
LOL. I had my first crush, like in kindergarten. I just never told my parents. But, I didn`t chase after him or anything to get heartbroken. LOL.
These are really cute!! I love how perfect they are for Vday treats!
My son is 8 too. this is starting already? girls? really? :’(
These look super cute! And your son is too adorable! :)
What a cute story. I vividly remember those skating parties, and my first couple skate! These hearts are so cute and look delicious :)
These are so cute, Kristan, but the whole girl thing? Uh, I totally understand. I’d have been bawling.
Never too early for Valentine’s treats! These look yummy!
Oh NO!! I am so not ready for girls! I am relieved right now that my 2nd grader isn’t a fan of girls, but it is only matter of time!
Love these little hearts – would make for great class treats.
I hope you girls had a blast :)
I will take a bucket of these and a mountain of Shelly’s rice krisipe treats. I’m in love!
I see a lot of tears ahead for you. Crying at 8 years old. Wait until he tells you he wants to get married, you’ll probably shoot the girl. Recipe looks great.
You’re just cute.
I don’t even want to think about Daisy, who’s almost 2, getting married and going away.
OMG
PS- These are so gorgeous!
I love that you are teaching your son to be sweet to his girlfriend, he is going to grow up to be one great man with treating ladies like that, I promise you! Then you’ll have all the girls knocking on your door…uh, wait, maybe that’s not what you want… but I still love it. You’re a good mom. :)
Okay, I can’t stop looking at these, so I’ve decided I’m just going to have to buy some heart molds & make them.
I’ve never made candy before, so I have a couple of questions. How many candies did the recipe make, using those particular molds (I’m thinking I should buy 2 molds)? How long do they take to harden in the fridge before you can pop them out?
Thanks in advance! :-)
Cuuute! And I can’t have kids yet because I can’t bear the idea of them falling in love with anyone other than me!
It is never too early or late for treats involving red velvet. NEVER.
Love this recipe!! It will definitely be made this season :D
Jon David — it’s illegal to marry at 8 years old. Sadly, not to young to have your heart broken. When I was seven years old a young Romeo started coming to my house every morning to carry my books and walk me to school. (We walked then, it was 1950!) He would bring sweet posies. My mother figured out he was helping himself to the neighbor’s flowers! At the time I barely gave him the time of day. Boys? Boys! Phooey. I could care less. It would take me until I was 13 before I even noticed boys existed. Once I did realize I liked boys . . . it was a DIFFERENT story. Good luck Jon! I wish you love, love, love from your beloved this (soon to be) Valentine”s Day.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, that’s so sweet!!! You need to get your husband “involved” to be a Good “role model”(not that he isn’t already). But, now he needs to show your son how to “treat” a lady, i.e, flowers, candy, making dinner, you get it! A GREAT “excuse” to get all those things you always wanted your husband to do!
I want to share this tip with you that I use with my Wilton Melting Pot:
When I was finished using my Melting Pot, I always dreaded cleaning out the left over chocolate. Getting all the chocolate out always created a big chocolately mess in my kitchen sink!! So, I now line my melting pot with a “slow cooker” liner bag. First, I melt the chocolate in the liner bag in the microwave (it’s faster) and use the melting pot to keep the chocolate warm and good consistency.
After I’m finished with one color of chocolate, I remove the bag, chill in refrig. then crack out left over chocolate to store in a container to reuse later. Cracking the excess chilled chocolate out of the liner is super fast and there in NO mess! I can use the one melting pot for as many colors as needed by just changing the liner. Or, if I know I will be dipping the same color chocolate again soon(2-3 days), I will leave the excess chocolate in the liner, close it with a twist tie, and refrigerate until needed. I just reuse the same liner and add more chocolate.
Let me know if you try this-it really is a time saver!!! of the melting
That is SUCH a great idea!!

My 3 year old is watching Spider-Man for the 1,789 time this week. And after I got him dressed out of pj’s today (I don’t know why I bothered changing him since it’s 3pm, at this point it is just to fool my husband) my little one said, “thanks mom, now I’m going to go kiss girls!” Even at the tender age of 3 they can break your heart.
We need to just take a deep breath and enjoy ever minute, because they’re going to eventually go thru that awkward, smelly (blooming onion), pimply, oily hair, junior high child before we now it. Bless their heart…. Eeekkk!
Know* darn typo!
OMG~!!! I laughed out loud and had to read it to my husband. Funniest thing ever because if you have a son (which we do)…I can feel your pain as a mom and joy that someone else feels the same about the “other women”. :)
