Caramel Apple Cheesecake Cream Horns

So, you know how sometimes guests show up at your house unexpectedly and you need an easy but impressive dessert to throw together last minute?

Oh.

That never happens at your house?

It never happens at mine either.  Mostly because when someone shows up unexpectedly (like the mailman…the UPS man…things along those lines), I duck down and army crawl across the floor where I hold my breath and peek out the bottom of the blinds until they’re gone.  Then I wait about five minutes before going out to get my package.

Why do I do that?

Do I want them to think that invisible people that have an online shopping addiction live in my house?

I don’t even know.

It kind of reminds me of when you give a dog a treat and instead of just eating it in front of you, they haul off with it and hide somewhere like we don’t know they eat things.

Anyways.

Since talking this out and coming to the conclusion that A) My mailman thinks I’m a troll who is allergic to sunlight and shops online to fill the void in my soul and B) No one has hungry guests stop by unexpectedly because OMG hello it’s 2012 haven’t you heard of texting first?!, all my reasons that you need to make this dessert happen are out the window.

Well, except for the other ALTERNATE reason, which is that you like to eat yummy stuff that looks pretty.

So…

Here is it:

Pretty and fancy?

Check.

Yummy and easy peasy?

Checkity check.

First off, you’ll need some cream horn molds.  You can buy them HERE.

Then, lets pretend that there is a photo of me cutting some puff pastry into strips and wrapping it around the molds.

(INVISIBLE PUFF PASTRY AND CREAM HORN MOLD PHOTO)

(I SAID PRETEND!!!!)

I really DID do this, but it turns out that my kitchen looks like dungeon so the photos are all dark and weird and no good for anyone.

Then you bake the molds with the puff pastry wrapped around them, then remove the molds, fill with yummy stuff, and drizzle with caramel.

You can handle that, right?

Caramel Apple Cheesecake Cream Horns

INGREDIENTS

  • For the pastry:
  • 1 package (2 sheets) puff pastry, thawed
  • Cream Cheese Filling:
  • 8 oz block cream cheese, softened
  • 4 tbs butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • The rest:
  • 21 oz can apple pie filling
  • 1/2 (11 oz) bag of caramel bits

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 400. Lightly butter a baking sheet or spray with nonstick spray and set aside.

2.  Carefully unfold the pastry sheets onto a lightly floured countertop or board.  Cut each strip horizontally into 8 strips.  Carefully wrap strips around molds, making sure that layers overlap slightly and gently pressing together.  Place on prepared baking sheet and bake until golden brown, 15 minutes or so.  Let cool for just a few minutes, then carefully remove molds and allow to finish cooling on a cooling rack.

3.  In the bowl of a mixer, beat cream cheese, butter, and vanilla together on medium speed until smooth.  Add powdered sugar and beat on low until just combined.  Scrape the sides of the bowl and increase speed to high, beat for another minute.

4.  Give the apples in the pie filling a rough chop so that they are easier to fit in the cream horns.

5.  Fill the cream horns:  I used a piping bag, but you could also use a small spoon or a butter knife.  Spread/pipe cream cheese filling along bottom half of cream horn, then fill with pie filling on top.

6.  Melt caramel bits with a tablespoon of water over low heat in a small saucepan.  Spoon over cream horns before serving.

Trust me when I say you need these in your life.

Also, if you remember, my friend Shelly and I have teamed up this week to bring you tons of Caramel Apple flavored treats!! Today, she is sharing the recipe for Caramel Apple Cheesecake Bars, so pop over and check it out!!

Enjoy and have a happy Thursday!!

I do the army crawl, too. In fact, back when I was a newly wed with a brand new baby, my parents (who happen to excel at the unexpected drop by) stopped by and knocked and knocked and knocked while I hid just under the window. Finally, my dad said “Karly! I can see your foot!”

I felt like the world’s biggest jerk. But my house was a DISASTER, man. Couldn’t they have just called first so I could toss the baby puke rags in the laundry?

Love these cream horns. The last thing I need is another fancy shaped pan/mold, and yet…I need this fancy shaped pan/mold.

Giiiiirl, it’s fine that you are a hidden sunlight-allergic troll with a shopping problem, but it’s NOT fine that now I need 80 of these delicious horns. Because, let’s be honest. All of our lives were missing a little horn-y action, right? Er, sorry. Seriously, my favorite caramel apple dessert of yours yet! You and Shelly need to do themed weeks more often methinks.

When my son was around 2 or 3 years old I had hiding down to an art. I had a mother-in-law who thought “dropping by” was FINE!!!! Where on earth did she get this idea??? She and my sister-in-law would come by once or twice a week. My sister-in-law would drop by at least once a week at DINNER time1 Oy vey. I tried giving hints, I tried telling them I HATED dorp-in in-laws, I told my husband to tell his mother to STOP IT! Didn’t work. What did work? I HID. I had a room in the basement where she couldn’t see me. Then the next day she’d say — I rang and rang your bell — I LOOKED through the mail box slot and saw your car in the garage — where were you?? I’d lie and tell her I was having coffee with a neighbor, I went to the play ground with a friend that’s why my car was in the garage. At some point she FINNALY got the message. I agree with you 100% and you have my promise (cross my heart) I will never drop-in on you — or anyone!

Those are beautiful! I can totally relate. I never ever answer the door, only checking after the coast is clear to see if I got a box. And I’m pretty sure I’d have a panic attack if someone just stopped by, but then again, I wouldn’t answer the door.

OMG, one of my biggest weaknesses is creme horns – why did you give me a direct link to the tools needed to make them at home? My husband & daughter can tell when my hormones are making me crazy by the fact that I’m short-tempered and making a run to the grocery store for creme horns – I could really throw them if I just fixed them anytime I felt like it. ;)

I have a long history of the’duck and sneak’ when the mailman comes a callin’ However, my children seem to think that the doorbell means its time for a party and come screaming from the ends of the earth yelling ‘someone’s at the door!!!!! I’ll get it!!!!’
Why do they do this? Anyone?

I bought these molds and the puff pastry is in the freezer and I haven’t tried them yet. Tomorrow I will go to see our best friends first grandbaby ( a little girl born yesterday named Claire!) and these will be dessert. Thank you so much for inspiring me to use these!

I’m pretty pathetic, because if I did have guests show up unexpected, they would either get something that is leftover or nothing at all. That’s what they get for not calling or texting first!! Buuuttt… I would show up anwhere for one of these. Love!

Why do you do this to me day after day! I’m DROOLING NOW!!!!! And about the hiding out from people thing, I do that when the traveling religious salesman come to my door. But instead of me pretending I’m invisible, I have two kids who are always home (cuz I homeschool) and there always like,”MOMMY, THERE ARE TWO PEOPLE AT THE DOOR AND I THINK THEY WANT YOU!” There goes my master plan of pretending I didn’t hear the 5 dozen knocks and doorbell rings :(

Yummy! I usually don’t answer the door straightaway because inevitably, I’m in my pajamas and I’m not wearing pants. I don’t want to scare the UPS man/woman.
