Caramel Butter Pecan Bars

Let’s talk about laundry today.

On the surface, it’s pretty simple.  Throw it in the washer, throw it in the dryer, fold it, put it away.

But it came to my attention yesterday that there are mitigating factors that some people (like maybe your husband/boyfriend/fiance) are unaware of, so we’re going to discuss this now in the hopes that you can educate them before things get out of hand.

Because laundry requires a bit of planning.

I keep my hamper in my bathroom, and 5 days out of 7 there are piles of sorted laundry littering my bathroom floor.  To a mere observer, the piles surely seem haphazard.

But what they REALLY are is a small piece of a finely tuned machine.

Anytime I throw in a pile of laundry, there are a couple ofquestions I ask myself :

Is there something already IN the washer?

If the above answer is YES– Is there a load already IN the dryer too?

This is important because it throws a whole wrench in the laundry process.  It means that besides just throwing a load in, I also have to commit to folding and putting away the load in the dryer (or at least folding it and leaving it in the living room for everyone to step over) AND transferring the washer stuff to the dryer.  Which will obviously ALSO need put away, lest the NEW load I’m washing sits all day/night and gets mildewed.

See?  A simple thing like throwing in a load of laundry is not so simple.

Basically, I’m sort of a rocket scientist, what with the laundry algebra I’m doing all day.  It’s tough, wears out my brain, and is at least partly responsible for the days that my husband comes home and I inform him that his dinner choices are sandwiches or Fruity Pebbles.

It came to my attention that some people might not be fluent in Laundry Algebra when my well meaning husband decided to do some laundry.

You know how sometimes your kid(s) are playing super quietly in their room, and instead of asking what they’re doing, you tiptoe like a stealth ninja up to their door and spy on them because you know that the slightest disturbance will throw everything out of balance and next thing you know, they’re asking for food and changing the channel from Real Housewives to Cartoon Network?

It was sort of like that.  I didn’t want to do anything to make him question the fact that he was doing laundry, so I made sure to be quiet and still and let it be.

The next day, however, I entered the laundry room to be greeted with a sight that one can only describe as a miniature house of horrors.

The laundry basket I use to haul clean laundry to the living room, where I sit and fold it, was full of wrinkled clothes.  Clothes that had NOT been run again or fluffed before removing because I guess that some people don’t know the trick about dryers doubling as super expensive magic ironers.

The dryer was full of a giant load of jeans, cardigans, and a fun assortment of sturdy and delicate clothes.  It had been run on Heavy Duty apparently, because that is my husband’s favorite washer/dryer cycle.  I have never used Heavy Duty myself, but I guess it sounds manly, as I have no other explanation for his choice.

The washer was full as well.

I sat down and tried to explain the Laundry Algebra to my husband.  How you can’t just throw in a load unless you take full measure of the current situation and can commit to seeing it through.  He seemed like he understood what I was saying, but I’m honestly not fully convinced.  He was making the same face as one when I talk about shoes.

In short — be careful when you wish for someone to help you with the laundry.  Because they might just create MORE work for you, then you will wish that you hadn’t even complained ever.

Okay, I actually never wish I hadn’t complained, I just wish that instead of  DOING the laundry, my husband would instead buy me a present to make up for it.  Much better for everyone involved.

As always, this post is a two for one, because besides sharing sage laundry advice ( presents are better than help), I’m also sharing the recipe for these yummy and easy bars.

There is a buttery cookie layer, a caramel layer, a pecan layer, and a chocolate layer.

It’s a good thing all around.

Caramel Butter Pecan Bars

Recipe adapted from Taste of Home Cookies June 2012 Issue

Print This Recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 sticks (12 Tablespoons) cold butter, sliced into pieces
  • 1 cup finely chopped pecans
  • 12 oz jar caramel ice cream topping, warmed until pourable
  • 11.5 oz bag milk chocolate chips

INSTRUCTIONS

1.   Preheat oven to 350.

2.  In a large bowl, combine flour and brown sugar.  Cut in butter until you have a blended, crumbly mixture.  Evenly sprinkle over the bottom of an ungreased 9×13 pan.  Press firmly to make a crust.  Sprinkle pecans evenly over the crust and drizzle with the caramel topping.

3.  Bake for about 15-20 minutes, until the caramel is bubbling all over.  Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle with entire bag of chocolate chips.  Let stand for 5 minutes, then carefully spread the melted chips over the surface of the bars.  Cool until chocolate is set, then cut into squares.

These would also be great with some chopped toffee pieces sprinkled on the chocolate layer. And maybe some sea salt.

Unfortunately, I didn’t think of that until just now.

Enjoy — these are a really great dessert and perfect for a pot luck. A little piece goes a long way!!

Happy Wednesday!!

Thanks for reading!! I put lots of love into this post, so if you enjoyed it, please leave a comment, share, or subscribe. (As you can probably tell, I'm in constant need of validation, so this keeps me from questioning my self worth and crying into a box of wine) If, by some chance, you didn't enjoy the post, take it up with my personal zombie ninja.

I’m so glad someone else understands – and has created a term for! – Laundry Algebra! I don’t have a tumble dryer, so I have to factor in weather conditions and will there be enough room to hang the clothes on the line or else any tall surface in the house will get clothes pinned to the size of it. These bars would help me through any laundry dilemma!

First off, these look amazing and so delicious. I love your suggestion of the toffee too, nom!

Secondly, laundry. I hate it with a passion. I pretty much do the same as you but with sorting of damn colours, whites, darks, delicates, and finally, woolens (gah!) Bathroom > sorting > travel to washer > wash > dryer or clothes line (if it’s actually sunny in England. Yes, exactly! Don’t laugh now) > fold > put away. However, if it’s been in the dryer, it always comes out creased even if I do have a 9kg dryer load. I hate ironing with a massive passion too so most times I try and get away with hand ironing (i.e. running my hand over it) and putting at the bottom of a folded pile so the other clothes crush into somewhat an ironed look. Yes, imma lazy!

My husband informed yesterday morning he was out of work clothes. So, I threw his clothes in the washer and had to run errands. When I came home, the dryer was running. Of course, on the counter, was a huge pile of wrinkled clothes that had been in the dryer! I didn’t even know he knew how the dryer worked. As much as i hate doing laundry, I don’t want anyone else to touch it!!!

TRust me, I know that trying to teach laundry inevitably creates more work for me. I tried to teach my husband when he complained that the laundry smelled too “flowery”…which inevitably lead to wet loads being left in the washing machine for days.

    We can’t win!
BUT these bars are total winners, of that I am sure :)

I love your blogs…. they always brighten up my day. I do have a husband who realizes how hard it is to do the laundry… He is originally from Africa where he only did laundry by hand, although he can’t figure out why I throw certain clothes in certain piles….. MY laundry algebra! My laundry goes from the floor piles…to the washer…to the dryer or line in the basement or outside (depending on the weather)…. into the basket to be folded on the the living room couch and then back to the basket… where it usually stays until the next time I do laundry… So on laundry day I first have to put any clothes that are still in the basket away… Oh the joys of laundry! But the bars will help to make laundry oh, so much more enjoyable.

Easter Holidays have involved many mistakes of interrupting the kids whilst they were playing nicely only for food network to be replaced with Alvin and the Chipmunks and for me to be dragging myself to the kitchen to find snacks.

Personally am a fan of saving energy by drying and ironing at the same time (i.e. the tumble dryer!)

I would make these but would be afraid of eating them all in one go and adding to my weight to lose when the baby is older!!

When my daughters were younger I tried this laundry algebra on them. We learned one little error in my translation. You see, sometimes I would say “please put the laundry that is in the washer into the dryer for me’.
They would grumble a bit, but they would do go do it.
Later I would return to said dryer to find my instruction left out one little detail ‘ and please turn the dryer on ‘.
It became a running joke for years when something was incomplete ‘but you never said turn the dryer on!

Laundry Algera. You are SO right! My husband did the laundry once — I must have been in a coma. He believed because he was born with certain genitalia he need never lift a finger. I.e., he was created King and I was his duly appointed servant/slave. (Believe me, if I’d known how things were going to be I’d never have married him. And, yes, we’ve been happily divorced for many years.) I came to from my coma, opened the dryer. It was so FULL I couldn’t pull anything out. He must have had six loads in there. Everything compacted and wrinkled. And yep, whites, delicates, dirty, dirty jeans, etc. all co-mingling. Your Carmel Butter Pecan bars remind me of some I make with Matzos. Easy peasy, delish.

Laundry is one of those things that I have decided should become made aware of on the second date. After years of my husband not understanding I lost it one morning. After crying because my nice work meeting clothes were sitting in the washer all night and the dryer was beyond comprehension, I told him to never touch a piece of my clothing again. I thought we had made up and everything was ok until I came home that evening to a pile of the wrinkled dryer clothes and the wet washer ones on the bedroom floor with a note telling me I have issues. I thought I had maybe gone overboard with the my-life-is-so-horrible-because-my-husband-can’t-do-laundry, until I read this post. Thank you. Thank you for proving my ‘laundry-system’

I have 6 kids and a never ending supply of laundry. After trying everything – yelling, temper tantrums (mine) and a chore chart (hahaha…) – i came up with a new system. It’s called the “do your own laundry or go naked” system. I bought them all their own clothes baskets. I do my laundry and towels. Well, my = mine and my husbands. But he’s pretty good about doing laundry. He just can’t fold them right!! Seriously, he folds them backwards…I’ve even been nice and helpful and have SHOWN him how to do it correctly…no luck! So now, I just refold mine before I put them away (I’m just a little OCD about my folded laundry lol). Anway, I loved your laundry algebra story, and I think I’m going to make the bars tomorrow!! They look and sound incredible :)

I’m totally with you on the laundry algebra. There are SO MANY household tasks that men simply don’t understand.

This morning, the dog peed on the carpet. Husband decided to give his 8 1/2 month pregnant wife a break, and he dragged out the Bissel to clean up the mess.

But, he didn’t change the setting from “Tools/Pretreat” to “Floors”. How he could have missed the fact that the machine was NOT in fact sucking up all the water, and instead only further soaking the carpet is beyond me. So, after he left for work, I got to go over it again.

But, it was super nice of him to let me relax, and not have to clean up after his dog. That is the takeaway here, right?

I am LITERALLY sitting here staring at the exact same pile of clean (wrinkled) laundry. The best part though is that my 5 year old SON totally called my husband out on it. And wouldn’t let it go. “But you’re NOT SUPPOSED to just throw it in the basket!!”

Anyway, so now I’m wondering if my son will grow up all super laundry skilled or if there is some kind of shot they give boys in middle school to make them forget how to do things like hugging their mom and doing laundry. Apparently choosing a school will be trickier than I originally thought.

Okay, first: Laundry Algebra. I agree with you all the way through the folding. My big problem with laundry though, is the hauling up and down the stairs from the basement. For a start, it’s the *basement*. It has no windows, and it’s become our dumping ground for crap that doesn’t have a home, which just makes me sad.

Secondly, I have a fear of stairs. Fall down a few flights and injure your back permanently, you would too. Now try negotiating that flight of stairs with an overflowing heavy laundry basket. It’s the stuff nightmares are made of.

I’ve been on a campaign to somehow install a dumbwaiter in our house. It would solve so many of my laundry issues. I think I’ll make these bars to assist in my campaign.

OK laundry- my husband has the nerve to complain because I fold all the clothes and plac them in piles on the shelves (purchased just for this task), then I put out my clothes away and I force the children to do the same. But no one puts his clothes away- go figure, so he always has a giant pile of clothes o the nice shelves. Second more than laudry issues are cooking issues. I make sure we have a nice hot meal for dinner every night around here. I often use a cutting bowl and a knife and a pot possibly two to make dinner for 5 people. Then I generally clean it all up. One day (the last time ever!), I asked him to make his famous jambalaya for dinner. The man used EVERY pot, bowl, and knife we own. Then of course I had to clean it all up! I say had to because we didn’t have any clean dishes!

I guess I’m just dadgum lucky! My husband is who usually does the laundry and he does a fine job of it. Me? I throw it all in together and hope for the best! We also have what we call “firehouse rules” (yep, he was a fireman). Firehouse rules state that if you cook, you don’t have to clean up…that’s left for whoever else is eating. (Obviously we don’t invoke these rules when we have company though.) I love that when I cook, my girls or husband clean. When he cooks, we girls clean. Seems so fair. I AM glad, though, that he likes to do laundry!

We recently moved back to an apartment with a down the hall and around the corner laundry room. At my house I had my own front loading HE washer & dryer set. Doing laundry is so much more work now!

On a brighter note…I can’t wait to spring these bars on my husband next time he has to wear a day old pair of pants to work cuz I didn’t do laundry!

I am drooling over these bars…just the name sounds delicious, but then the pictures are dreamy too. Yum!

As for laundry, my husband has, like, a C in Laundry Algebra. He knows the fluff trick with the dryer, and he’ll fold whatever he removes from the dryer (albeit not well), but he will mix and match jeans and whites, delicates and work pants… He’s all willy-nilly about it. And he never uses the right cycle. As much as I like the help, I would just rather do it myself.

On the bright side, we taught the kid how to do his own laundry last year, so Saturdays and Sundays are his laundry days. There are SOME good things about kids growing up. But soon he’ll be a man, and he’ll no longer remember how to do the laundry properly. Oh well, at least he’ll be someone else’s problem by then. ;)

These are fabulous! I used cashews instead of pecans, and they turned out spectacular. The crust gives the bar a nice balance of not so sweet, so the overall experience isn’t over-the-top-oh-my-goodness sugaryness (is that a word? well, it is now). It’s just right. As I was making them, I thought the amount of caramel wasn’t going to be enough, but after baking and adding the chocolate, it turned out to be just perfect.
    Will definitely make again. Thanks!!

I made these for my mother-in-laws’ surprise 8Oth birthday party. I added toffee chips to the nut layer (before the carmel) and had to add course sea salt to the top layer and they were a HUGE hit!!! This recipe is definately a go to for the future. It’s easy, it’s fast, and it’s scrumptious!!!
