Hunger Games Party

So, you know how even though I’m 32, I’m actually like, 12?

Well, I have been obsessing about the Hunger Games movie premier this week.

O.B.S.E.S.S.I.N.G.

And I know I got super excited about the Twilight movies and Harry Potter, but this is way worse.  WAY.  So if the movie sucks, I will probably go home and cry and my husband will shake his head and watch Full Metal Jousting and wonder why he married a child adult.

But I can’t help myself.  I’ve got a fevah and the only prescription is….

MORE HUNGER GAMES.

So lately I’ve been searching the internets for some fun Hunger Games food inspiration, but haven’t been finding much.  Which brought me to the decision to make my OWN Hunger Games dessert party…

For myself.

Yes, I spent a perfectly good Saturday afternoon setting up a pretend party.  I did it for YOU, okay??  Because the world needs Hunger Games party ideas.

Wanna see what I came up with?

Super cute cupcakes didn’t really seem appropriate given the theme and feel of the story, and there really wasn’t a ton of food inspiration in the books.  I reread the first one and made note of foods that stood out or seemed to have some type of meaning to the story.

When Katniss was leaving for the Hunger Games, Peeta’s dad came to visit her and gave her some cookies in a white paper bag, so I decided that those would be perfect.  I don’t imagine his cookies having a ton of color and cute sprinkles, so I made these using a spice cake mix.

I placed the bags of cookies in a wooden crate.

I added some little bags of chocolate rock candy for fun and to add some color.  I found these at the Candy Craze candy store in my mall.  You could also probably find them online.

Another thing that stood out to me was the bread that was spread with goat cheese and topped with apples that Peeta and Katniss ate in the cave at the Hunger Games.  Goat cheese had a special significance because it made Katniss think of her sister Prim.

But because I wanted to make DESSERTS, this is actually goat cheese frosting spread on slices of Sara Lee pound cake!  The goat cheese frosting was actually very good, just a tangy and richer cream cheese frosting.  But if goat cheese isn’t your thing, feel free to use regular cream cheese frosting instead.

Top with apple slices that have been tossed lightly in citrus juice so they don’t brown.

Of course, the poisonous berries are the turning point of the whole series, so I had to incorporate them somehow.  I decided to do fun little mini cakes, placed in parchment paper cupcake liners.  The cake is just circles cut from pound cake slices, but you could easily use your favorite cake recipe or mix instead.

I used the goat cheese frosting that I made and topped them with a blackberry sauce and candy “berries”.  I bought the berries at Candy Craze, but I’ve seen them at Walmart and Target in the candy aisle.  The candy berries would also be super cute in favor bags.

For the drinks, I had to go with orange juice, because Katniss had never tasted it until her first trip to the Capitol.

I found these fun straw flags HERE at Living Locurto.  She also has lots of other Hunger Games Printables if you need them!!

The recipes I used are below:

Spice Cake Cookies

Print This Recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • Box Duncan Hines Spice Cake Mix
  • 1 stick butter or margarine, softened
  • 2 eggs
  • Coarse sanding sugar

INSTRUCTIONS

1.  Preheat oven to 350.

2.  In the bowl of a mixer, beat cake mix, butter or margarine, and eggs on medium until fully combined.  Drop by spoonfuls on an ungreased cookie sheet.  Sprinkle generously with sanding sugar and bake for about 10-12 minutes, until cookies have puffed up and edges have set.  Remove from oven and let cool on sheet for a few minutes before removing to cooling rack.

Goat Cheese Frosting

Print This Recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • 8 oz block cream cheese, softened
  • 6 oz goat cheese, softened
  • 2/3 cup powdered sugar

INSTRUCTIONS

1.  In the bowl of a mixer, beat goat cheese and cream cheese on medium speed until smooth and combined.

2.  Add powdered sugar and beat on medium low until just blended.  Increase speed to medium high and beat for about 2 minutes, until light and fluffy.

Notes:

If you prefer, you can substitute cream cheese for goat cheese.

Blackberry Sauce

Adapted from Bake at 350

Print This Recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 12 oz frozen blackberries, thawed

INSTRUCTIONS

1.  In a small saucepan over medium heat, whisk together cornstarch, sugar, and water.  Add blackberries and stir until mixture comes to a boil.  Boil an additional minute, stirring constantly.

2.  Pour mixture into a mesh sieve placed over a medium bowl, to strain out the seeds.  Chill before pouring over cakes.

I got little glass bottles, straws, and white cookie bags at Shop Sweet Lulu.

I hope you got some fun inspiration for a Hunger Games party of your own. Have a happy Monday and may the odds be ever in your favor!!

Thanks for reading!! I put lots of love into this post, so if you enjoyed it, please leave a comment, share, or subscribe. I was literally JUST thinking about this on the way home from the beach today. Goat cheese was the first thing that came to mind. I also remembered that she really loved the hot chocolate. Cookies seem like the only thing I could sneak in to the movie theatre. I was also thinking goat cheese brownies? Is that disgusting? I don’t know.

Confession time. I am one of three people in America who hasn’t read the book. I’m completely in the dark about the plot. I was talking to the girl who helps me take my groceriers to the car and she said she’d never even HEARD of The Hunger Games. Huh? Guess I better get with it and get me a copy. Kristan — as usual you are my inspiration. Love the cute, easy-peasy ideas you have. Plus, I learn something new — like I knew about rock candy (although I’ve never tried it — what do they taste like?) but I had no idea there’s candy in the shape of berries. Yes, I live under a rock.

Thanks for the great ideas! My 10 year old read the books and then let his teacher and then friends borrow them, so I have not been able to read them yet. We are having a Hunger Games Birthday Party Sleepover for him this weekend with a trip to see the movie with 12 of his friends. If you don’t mind, I am going to incorporate your poisonious berries idea into the birthday cake! I am decorating the house with parachuttes I made from disposable paper/foam bowls covered with white plastic (circles cut from white garbage bags) and tied to gifts wrapped in white paper (candy bars). We’re serving Sweedish Fish, Auntie Annies cheddar bunnies, mini baguettes and apples and cheese and bottles of sleep syrup (purple Gatorade with altered labels) along with pizza and cake. We are also going to play “Assassain” with Nerf weapons.

I’m happy about that because life is so much more fun when you have an inner child-lol! Lovely ideas, but Katniss did in fact have orange juice before she visited the Capitol. Her first breakfast on the train included some orange juice, which Katniss said she had only tried once before, when her father bought some as a special treat on New Year’s Eve.
