Chocolate Surprise Easter Eggs
When I was a kid, we used to dye eggs and leave them out for the Easter bunny to hide.
The bunny would hide them, we’d find them in the morning, and then I’d sit and peel a few and eat them for breakfast.
Dude.
That is disgusting.
Eating hard boiled eggs that sat out ALL NIGHT?!?!
HOW AM I EVEN ALIVE RIGHT NOW.
Occasionally, an egg would go unfound and a few days later we would notice a fart smell permeating the house. That should have been a clue that warm hard boiled eggs were basically poison, but my naive mind was unable to put two and two together.
Needless to say, we only hide plastic eggs around here. I like to say that I fill my own, but I usually buy the Willy Wonka kind that already has Laffy Taffy and Nerds in them. I’ve found that Jon David forgets about them after a day or so, and then I can enjoy them while he’s at school.
Candy out of plastic eggs just tastes better because it’s like a present. I don’t know, that’s just how it is.
So, I got to thinking.
What could be better than a plastic egg with a candy present inside?
A CHOCOLATE EGG with a candy present inside, that’s what.
These are really easy and inexpensive to make.
You’ll need:
- Candy coating or almond bark — I used Candiquik, which I purchased in the baking aisle at Walmart
- An egg candy mold — I bought mine HERE
- Candy for filling the eggs — I used these fun bunny teeth gummies, but any candy or small toys/stickers would do
Melt candy coating according to package directions. Put a spoonful of chocolate in each mold and using the spoon, spread evenly as possible up the sides. Once all the molds are coated, place in the freezer for a few minutes to harden.
Gently wiggle the candy mold like you would an ice tray, and carefully remove egg halves. Fill with candy.
Using a small brush or even a knife, spread melted chocolate along the edge of one egg half. Press egg half over the egg half holding the candy to adhere.
I drizzled my eggs with some melted white Candiquik. It helps to hide any imperfections in your chocolate eggs.
Once the eggs are firmly “glued”, you can put them in treat bags and tie with ribbon.
Isn’t that easy?
Chocolate eggs whoop plastic eggs any day, if you ask me.
Enjoy and have a happy Tuesday!!

Thanks for visiting my blog! I realize you could be doing more important things with your time. Like watching the news or washing socks. I hope you stay awhile. Much more fun than socks, I promise.

Oh how stinkin’ cute! You packaged them up perfectly too!
These are adorable and I’m dying about your experience with hard boiled eggs. “someone would smell a fart smell….”
I was just going to comment that those are available in Germany, but they are illegal in the US because of the choking hazard (I think in Germany they are filled with toys). Such a cute idea! And the illegal thing makes you seem so DANGEROUS! Awesome! :)
Um yes, the easter bunny hid our hard boiled eggs too when I was little. But that makes sense because mom didn’t believe that food would go bad. Ever. I basically have a stomach of iron.
My mother was the same. She’d just scape off the green mossy stuff and tell us it was perfectly fine. Oy.
These are absolutely adorable!! And I agree–candy coming out of an egg (especially a chocolate one!!) totally tastes better!
omg – You beat me to it, I made these last night and doing a post on them this week – haha. I’ll link back to you for sure!
Love the drizzle over the top! Pretty!
I used to think the fart smell was coming from the rotten eggs, but then realized my dad was just using it as an excuse. lol! Kidding. But, yeah, that is disgusting to think about how we would eat those eggs as kids after they sat out! ew. Love this idea for the chocolate eggs, though!!!
One of my childhood memories of my grandfather was him eating the coloured Easter Eggs….but not the morning after…it was about a WEEK after they were coloured. I clearly remember being grossed out as he ate the eggs that had sat out for so long and were all mulitcoloured inside from the dye. (now that I think about it, maybe it wasn’t the dye that turned the inside of the egg green!)
These however look great!
Yeah, I’m not sure how I’m alive either. I did the same thing. AND, I used to eat Carl Buddig (gag) lunch meat for lunch every day that sat in my warm book bag all morning. So disgusting.
Love these chocolate eggs! So fun.
I’m obsessed! :-) These are the CUTEST! :-)
Okay the teeth inside the egg are just a little creepy. Lol. I get it, bunnies and all, but I dunno I just feel weird about it. Adorable idea though. I bet you could use plastic eggs instead of the candy molds?
I think that might work just fine. And you could always use jelly beans. But kids like fun, gross stuff. They’re weird like that.
These are as cute as can be! Perfect for the season!
Super fun idea! Our Easter gift is a baby brother, so will have to save this one for next year.=) bellesbazaar-heather.blogspot.com
What an awesome Easter gift…congratulations!!
These are awesome! I love how you presented them, too. Definitely filing away for next year (we will be traveling until the day before Easter). Thanks for this!
I love everything about these eggs!! They are so fun to look at and they are MADE OF CHOCOLATE with candy inside!!! And individually wrapped with a festive bow….I’ll take 3, umm…dozen.
You are hilarious. I totally was laughing while reading that post. Also super creative i love it! Perhaps i”ll try it this year:)
The Easter Bunny used to hide one chocolate egg for each kid and then one regular egg for each member of the family (which my parents were more than willing to let my brothers and I search for). When we found them all, my parents would use them to cook us all breakfast (usually as part of an Irish fry or French toast with scrambled eggs).
It was only years later when I was telling a friend about it that I realized how &$#$ing evil my parents were because WE HAD CHICKENS!! Instead of us doing our normal morning chore of collecting eggs from a known location (the coop), they made us run around and hunt for them.
super cute idea :) <3 love it!
I really love these! So cute! I especially love treats that are easy to make. I’m not much into making candy, because it’s usually too hard for me. Let’s just say, I had a bad experience with divinity once, and I’ve never fully recovered! Can’t wait to try these myself!
You can do it!!!
You are adorable as usual. Kristan, do any of the candy melts come in semi-sweet dark chocolate? I’m not a fan of milk chocolate. Could I use melted Semi-sweet Nestle bits? Maybe add a spoon of corn syrup or ???
I’ve seen dark chocolate candy coating in bags at ACMoore (and maybe Michaels too?). Don’t know how they taste though. Good luck!
MUCH better than plastic eggs!
When I was a kid, we found (by the smell) a forgotten hard-boiled egg in our piano, a couple of weeks past Easter!
I love a good surprise and this is a good one!
I love those surprise “teeth” inside your chocolate egg shells! hahaah…too cute! Yes, these are a lot more fun than hard-boiled eggs that’s been sitting in room temperature over night! :P
Aww these are so adorable and perfectly packaged too!
Ah love it!
That is how I grew up with Easter eggs. I love it! My Mopm got to be here once with us for Easter. She hid plastic filled and real boiled eggs for the kids. They are all big now but they still talk about it. They had an American Easter! lucky babies… :D thank you for sharing
I LOVE YOUR BLOG!! You crack me up, AND I make your Starbucks lemon cake last night and used the leftover batter for cupcakes for my co-workers, WE are a hit, I did give you SOME of the glory!! So happy to have you sitting in that kitchen all day (sarcasm) ~ a woman’s dream!!! :)
These are adorable! What a cute idea. I had to crack up when I read about you eating eggs that had sat out all night. I think we’ve all done that!
I learned recently though, that if you buy organic, free range, eggs…they don’t even need to be refrigerated! They can actually just sit out on your counter. I still refrigerate mine though, simply because it just seems so wrong. But, I’m assuming that if they can sit out on the counter in their raw stage, they are certainly OK to eat after they’ve been cooked and hiding all night.
Have a great Easter! :)
Those are so sweet! Maaaybeee a little creepy with the teeth in them, but I like the idea. ;)
How cool is that! Yes, chocolate eggs with candy definitely wins everytime!!
Very cute idea. So many great little treats you could hide inside these eggs!
How fun are these?! Way easier than I thought they would be, and my son would love those bunny teeth candy!
I spent my lunch hour and an hour after work shopping for these molds!!! LOL I gave up, came home and ordered them online! I was so looking forward to making these tonight! Guess I will have to wait another week!! Thank you for posting a link to order.
Cannot wait to try this!!!
Hahahahaha……I had the same experiences in my childhood! I, too, am a plastic egg user these days. We still dye eggs, but they go in the FRIDGE, until eaten. So funny that we didn’t get the idea that real cooked eggs, left out all night….not a good idea. Thanks for making me laugh this morning! And I love the idea of making your own chocolate eggs! I just have to find the molds. Very cool idea and simple enough for someone like me!
Adorable! You are so clever!
