Banana Split Cupcakes
Do you ever wonder what happened to all the normal people in the world?
And by “normal”, I don’t mean that they can’t sit around trying to dream up how to build a robot, or gnaw on Fruit Roll Ups while they stalk people’s photos from 4 years ago on Facebook.
I just mean normal acting people in society. It’s like they don’t even exist anywhere.
I went to an assembly at my son’s school a few weeks ago and scanned the crowd for a parent that I might be able to make friends with.
Not. A. One.
I mean, they don’t have to wear expensive clothes or fancy shoes or pass out free candy or anything. Just…you know…brush their hair, be polite to other humans, not carry a fly swatter in their back pocket, and maybe make their baby wear socks when it’s 44 degrees outside.
Normal stuff like that.
I guess I don’t understand when it all got so hard, because when I was a kid, lots of other kids seemed normal. But then you turn into grown-ups and everyone starts over sharing or smelling like a Filet O Fish or asking for inappropriate favors and I’m like, where did all the normal people go?
I’m seriously wondering if there’s like a secret island where normal adults live. And they put on pants (that aren’t decorated with cartoon characters) when they pick their kids up from school, and if they stop by your house for a visit, they leave before things get awkward and their kid is asking for a second meal.
I mean really, if you’re at someone’s house long enough that your kid needs to eat TWICE, it’s pretty much time to go home. It’s a rule.
Anyways, if you know where all the normal people of the world live, let me know. I made some really awesome cupcakes that I’d love to share with them.
One of my favorite things to do is split a Banana Split with Jon David, so I thought that it would make the perfect cupcake flavor. Banana flavored cake is filled with marshmallow creme and topped with strawberry frosting, garnished with almonds, sprinkles, chocolate sauce, and a cherry.
I really really loved these cupcakes. They were a lot of fun, tasted great, and looked super cute too!! I hope you enjoy them.Banana Split Cupcakes
INGREDIENTS
- 1 box Duncan Hines French Vanilla Cake Mix
- 1 stick butter, melted
- 4 eggs
- 3/4 cup water
- 2 medium sized ripe bananas, mashed
- 7 oz jar marshmallow creme (or fluff)
- For Frosting:
- 2 sticks butter, softened
- 1 cup sliced strawberries, pureed into a pulp
- 5-6 cups powdered sugar
- Chocolate sauce
- Sprinkles
- Chopped almonds
- Maraschino Cherries
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 350. Line 24 muffin tins with liners.
In the bowl of a mixer, combine cake mix, melted butter, eggs, water, and mashed bananas. Beat on low for 1 minute. Increase speed to medium high and beat for 2 minutes more. Fill muffin tins 2/3 full with batter and bake for about 15 minutes or until tops spring back when lightly touched. Remove cupcakes from tins and allow to cool on a cooling rack.
Once cupcakes are cool, prepare frosting:
In the bowl of a mixer, combine butter and strawberries and beat on medium until combined. Slowly add powdered sugar on low until just mixed. Increase speed to medium high and beat for about1 minute.
Cut holes in the top of cupcakes with a sharp knife, about 1/3 of the way into the cupcake. Fill holes with a spoonful of marshmallow creme, then pipe or spread frosting on top. Top with chocolate syrup, chopped almonds, sprinkles and a cherry.
Notes:
For the strawberries, I used unsweetened frozen sliced strawberries. I thawed out a cup, then pulsed them in the food processor.
In the frosting, start out with one cup of powdered sugar. If the frosting seems to runny after beating it, add the other cup or more if necessary.
Have a happy Monday!!
**I’ve entered my Melted Ice Cream Cone Cupcakes in Celebrations.com’s Cupcake Crown contest. I’d really REALLY love a vote if you have a second to click over. Thank you!!!

Thanks for visiting my blog! I realize you could be doing more important things with your time. Like watching the news or washing socks. I hope you stay awhile. Much more fun than socks, I promise.

How in heck do you think of these things!
I know and they always look so perfect :) I am on your side there are no normal people in the world! I mean you try to be nice to people and in return they are either overly nice (too nice that it puts you off) or completly ignore you! These cupcakes look sooooo good any chance of you doing a hot fudge cupcake to go with the bannana split?
Oh my gosh! LOVE!! So danged cute!
Those look amazing I think I have to give them a try. Thanks for sharing.
these are just amazing! yay for yummy foods pretending to be other yummy foods!
These look so delicious! Not sure if I can help with the finding normal people job…
Your post today is exactly how I feel! There are no normal people left in MN either – I have always thought this but could never really put it into words, thank you!
I’ll take one, please….. or two, or three, or four……. they look yummy!
They look so good! That filling inside the cupcake and ALL THAT frosting…now THAT’s what I’m talking about!
Love a dessert that is really an excuse for a date!
These cupcakes are just amazing!
Such an awesome and creative idea…..as for the ” normal” people of the world, let me know when you find them!
Looks very yummy. If you find the secret island with all the normal people, let me know.
Love the cupcakes and the post. And, I love the thought of you scanning the crowd looking for a normal parent. Hilarious!
WOW! Those look like they would make a great breakfast for me :)
I know not of this “normal” of which you speak of. Living in West Virginia, all that you stated is normal here.
I don’t know how on earth you keep coming up with fresh ideas for the treats in your posts and the stories that go with them but I’m really happy that you do!
All the normal people are apparently in the same place as all the people that know how to drive, because there are nothing but idiots around me on the road that are half sleeping or texting or just plain stupid and can’t figure out the gas pedal from their a*#. Sorry.
Good morning, your cupcakes look delish, my boys would love them.
Pretty convinced normal people don’t exist anymore in “real life.” A birthday celebration at a restaurant yesterday all but confirmed it. This cupcake would likely be the Mr’s new favorite!
I love your posts- you crack me up!!! Question – what tip do you use to pipe the frosting like this? I have tried so many ways to get that look and just cannot get it!!! Thanks!
Your cupcakes are always so amazing! These are beautiful!
If you find out where they live, please share because I just got back from a cruise and I can tell you they are NOT there.
Also, cupcakes stuffed with marshmallow cream is my new favorite food.
Omg you’re killin me! I thought of this idea weeks ago after seeing your ice cream cone cupcakes and I hadn’t gotten to it yet. Oh well yours are way cuter than mine would’ve been anyway. :)
Watch the movie Idiocracy. It’s a sign of things to come! :)
Look. At. Those. OMG.
Just went to Walmart, almost got run over by some dude in a jacked-up Blazer, totally know what you mean. Problem is, I think this may be the new normal. Very disconcerting. These cupcakes will def make me feel better about it though. :)
Every time I go somewhere I wonder……When did it become acceptable to wear your pajamas out? Really ladies, support can be beautiful, wear a bra!!!!
I’m super normal (honest!) and was wondering the same thing. Do you think you can book a flight to the normal people island on Priceline? I’m itching to go.
At any rate, seeing as how I’m so normal I’l gladly accept a cupcake :) Ahem.
Love your posts! They make my day.
It is pretty amazing how normal people don’t exist anymore. They’ve been replace by rude, inconsiderate people and I just don’t like that. I do, however, like these cupcakes! Yum!
Oh, these pictures and cupcakes are SO cute!!!
You just seriously CRACK ME UP with every post, Kristan. I think you are this generation’s Erma Bombeck. You need a publisher…and a newspaper column. And I can say I knew you when.
Another great post, Kristan. I was chuckling so much that I ended reading it out to my husband, who also got a good chuckle. And seriously, what is up with the cartoon character pj pants in public? If I run into any normal people, I will definitely tell them about these amazing cupcakes!
Love these cupcakes, but love you even more! Of my goodness gracious alive. I’m with Bridget, you need a weekly column!
The normal people ARE NOT in South Texas I can assure you of that! Sometimes it’s just frieghting to think that anyone would think PJ’s in public is acceptable or letting your kids run loose in a department store is cute. Or that the extra 50 pounds that your carrying around your waist really needs to hang over the top of your jeans and out from under that all to small tee! Not sure where we got off the right track but we are far from it and I am afraid it is only going to get worse!! And cell phone ediquite ~ well that’s a whole other story!
Cupcakes look yummy ~ can’t wait to get off this diet and make some!
I feel ya, Kristan. I moved to North Carolina from Arizona last year and I can honestly say there aren’t any normal ones here either. I just assumed that there is a hair brush shortage in the South. My kids (the girls especially) get their hair done everyday and on the first day of school, I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone of Bed-heads. It’s sad when people stare at you because you don’t look like you just woke up at three in the afternoon.
I just caught myself making that noise Homer Simpson makes when he sees a doughnut.
(I don’t do that in public…)
I must make this cupcake!
I go to a very liberal college and wonder where the “normal” people are about eighteen times a day. lol If I ever find them, I will make these cupcakes and share them with said people.
I was just in line at the grocery store and had to immediately, at that very moment, post on facebook from my phone that there were 10 people in line and atleast 3 people in cartoon character pajamas…..I DO NOT understand it and never will. I wouldn’t venture to the grocery store in my very cute solid color pajamas!!
Died when you mentioned the baby socks, HELLO, teeny feet get cold!!! And the staying too long….had a neighbor that drove me crazy!!!
And the cupcakes look delish!!
BTW, I put in a vote for your cupcake and I perused through the rest of the entries.. You are totally going to win!
School assemblies are the worst! I never understand how so many people can be procreating. Man. That was probably mean. But seriously…you came out in public in flannel PJ pants tucked into grubby boots and a button down shirt…MISbuttoned?! Really?? Is it so hard to throw on some jeans, and button your shirt right?
And don’t even get me started on parents inappropriately dressing their kids for cold weather.
As for the cupcakes, I’m pretty sure normal and abnormal folks alike would dig em. They sound delicious and they LOOK adorable! :)
These are so cute… im kind of happy all the normal people go into hiding – - I don’t want to share these :$ well … unless they have candy, then we can trade. Otherwise, forget it – - these are mind for keeps.
My husband and I were just talking about people who wear Pajamas out in public. It completely disgusts me because all I can picture is this person schleping all around town letting the heels of the pj pants touch everything in God’s creation, then that same person not changing and just climbing right back into bed bringing all those germs & bacteria in that sleep space. Ugggh then I start to to think what kind of person would wear filthy jammies in their bed, then I have to think how dirty their house is and what critters must roam around in there. I have to stop before I gag….
But your cupcakes look delicious
Gorgeous colorful pic!!
Cute cupcakes!! I have no idea where the normal people are, certainly not here in Wyoming. I’m not sure if I’m normal or not but I’ve never carried a fly swat in my pocket!
“normal” people are out there, ya know, just walking around stalking the aisle’s for biscoff spread and the newest m&m to bake into a cookie. they get excited over a new spatula and take pictures of what they eat more than they do their children. that’s totes normal right?!?!?
You’ve got to come visit us in Bend, OR. I am not sure if we are all “normal” but we are friendly, we recycle, and we LOVE cupcakes! Nary a pocket full of flyswatter in sight!
Love the cupcakes. I think I am pretty normal, on a good day:)
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thought the exact same thing!!
These cupcakes are pretty much perfection. Yum!
:D always enjoy reading ur posts & that cupcake with marshmallow filling looks ridiculously delecious! well i better not comment on ‘normal people’ i have a faint doubt i might be in the other catagory :D
These look yummy! And if you could please give me pointers on how to keep socks on my 9 month old baby’s feet, I would LOVE it. Because it’s averaging about 30 degrees at my house and my child miraculously becomes barefoot right before walking into the grocery store. Which, if you didn’t know, is where all the mom’s who give me ‘I’m judging you and your barefoot baby’ face.
i’ve been thinking about these for nearly 24 hours. i’m in desperate need of one. best cupcake i’ve ever seen!!
Your post was so funny. I was rolling. Thanks for the great recipe for the cupcakes. I am going to try these for my family soon!
These look incredibly delicious!!! You come up with way too many good things :) Keep doing what you do!! I tottally voted for you and you are sooo going to win!!!
Well I for one want to devour these cupcakes, so that must mean I’m normal right? ;-)
Okay, you got my vote for the CupCake Crown – but did you notice that some of the entries were actually made by those very same parents you are talking about??? Body part cupcakes? I would have to draw the line at that!
I have to confess – I do walk my dogs in my PJ’s in the dark. Who are those people who get all dressed up before bed to go out and walk their dogs anyway? MY INSECURE NEIGHBORS, that’s who! :)
In the meantime, I am falling into a sugar coma just looking at the picture of your Banana Split Cupcake…..yum!
please tell me what tip you use for the swirl of frosting on your cupcakes, i bought the biggest round tip i could find (which was like a wilton 12 i think??) and it is sooooooo not big like this i try to pipe on a nice cupcake shop swirl and i get this dinky little frosting tube on my cupcakes. so then i go back to the tried and true wilton 1M tip, but please please include me and tell me which tip makes such nice big swirls like yours!
thank you i much appreciate it
I would to also know how you make that nice big swirl. Do share!!!
I totally agree with you on the Normal People thing. I live in the armpit of Oklahoma and sometimes it seems like there is NOBODY down here who can form a grammatically correct sentence, much less have any SOCIAL SKILLS! Don’t get me wrong, I love my area of the country and I love most of its people. They are friendly and down-to-earth. But let’s be honest, there are A LOT of people who could use some training on how to be a normal person.

Girl you are preaching to the Choir!! My kids new school is bad…but not nearly as bad as the last one. I use to HATE going to assemblies. I would say to hubby…look at all these people do they NOT care about themselves or their kids?? OMG. It just kills me. They would attend all grubby and let their kids talk and run around. When I go to school functions I like to dress nicely and my kids BEHAVE!
The other week I was in a very nice area of West Palm Beach, FL, in one of the “Upperclass” malls and a girl walked in with PJ’s on, like the ones 2 year olds wear that zip up and have the footies!! I kid you not, and they were LOUD..like colors galore everywhere. She was with her man too. Unbelieveable. I feel bad for my kids…it seems to be getting worse!
Love your blog and post! ;-))
Tracy Valure
I love your blog, you’re absolutely hilarious!
However I personally find it annoying when no1 has actually made the recipe. I mean of course they look great but it’s nice to see comment rating the recipe… I dunno that’s just me, Anyways.. Let me be the first to sayi did make these and although love the concept they weren’t what I had in mind…the cupcakes took double the time to bake bc after adding banana and everything else the batter was a bit more runny of course which is fine but the frosting on the other hand just didn’t come out like it should have and I did follow the recipe exactly. But it wouldn’t fluff up it was kinda runny… I also found the final product just wayyy tooooooo swee even my kids thought it was a little too much…
Just a review of my experience…
