Minty Fudge Cookies
I don’t think that most men understand what it is about women that makes us have to know EVERY. SINGLE. DETAIL of our child’s day at school.
What did you eat for lunch?
Who did you sit with?
What did you do in art?
Who did you play with at recess? Did any girls chase you, did you go on the swings or the slide or whatttt???????
It’s honestly a bit beyond my comprehension that my son even has a little life that I’m not a part of. You mean he eats food that I didn’t make him??? He learns things and has fun and talks to people?? Without ME????
HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE??
I’m fairly certain that my need to know everything is just my way of trying to confirm what my brain cannot accept: For about 7 hours a day, my kid does just fine without me all up in his business.
The most recent bit of news that has come from our after school talks is that Jon David’s friends have gotten into playing football at recess. So Jon David has been sadly watching from the sidelines, feeling abandoned.
Obviously, I suggested that he join the boys in their game of football, to which he looked at me and replied “Mom. They tackle each other. For REAL. Would YOU want to be on the ground with boys piled up on top of you?” Then he kind of shook his head like the very idea of playing foot ball was the stupidest thing he’s ever heard in his life.
(It was sort of a proud moment for me. Duh. Also, have you tried to get grass stains out of jeans?? No thank you sirs)
I decided to put all my years as a woman to good use and informed my son of a secret all us women know too well–if he just pretends not to care, and finds something more fun to do, the other boys will get so super jealous, that they will dying to play whatever game he is playing.
It’s just a boy fact. So predictable.
Excited, Jon David went to his room to think and emerged a bit later with an idea.
His idea was a survivalish type game called “Dual Teams” (isn’t that catchy mom????) where two teams of kids would compete in weekly challenges and the team that lost had to vote someone off.
Vote. Someone. Off.
Basically, my son is trying to create a playground reality show. I don’t even know what to think of this, but I am pretty sure it isn’t normal 7 year old behavior. Where does he get this from?
Obviously it’s my husband’s fault.
I, on the other hand, am perfectly normal. And one thing normal people do at Christmas time is make cookies. I adapted my favorite chocolate cookie recipe (one of the best cookies EVER!!) to include mint chips and Mint M&Ms, but you could also use Andes Mint Chips or whatever you can find.
These cookies need to be a part of your Christmas. Make it happen!!Minty Fudge Cookies
**adapted from Bake or Break’s Chewy Chocolate Cookies
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cup butter, softened
- 2 cups sugar
- 2 eggs
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 2 cups flour
- 3/4 cup cocoa
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 10 oz package Nestle Toll House Dark Chocolate and Mint Morsels
- 1 1/2 cups Mint M&Ms
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350.
In a large bowl, sift the flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt together.
In the bowl of a mixer, cream butter and sugar on medium speed until fluffy, about a minute. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition. Mix in vanilla.
Slowly add the flour mixture to the butter mixture and beat until fully combined. Fold in chips and M&Ms. Drop by the spoonful on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 7-9 minutes or until edges are set.
Remove from oven and let cool for several minutes before placing cookies on cooling rack.
Makes about four dozen cookies.
I hope you have a fabulous Tuesday. Thanks for reading!!

Thanks for visiting my blog! I realize you could be doing more important things with your time. Like watching the news or washing socks. I hope you stay awhile. Much more fun than socks, I promise.

A. I want these cookies.
B. I *also* must know every detail of kiddo’s day at school. Not only what HE ate, but what did the OTHER mom’s pack. (To which he always answers, “I don’t look at other people’s food.” Something is wrong with that boy.”)
C. Dual Teams….awesome. I love your kid….he’s the coolest! And, yay for no football!
He sounds like a smart kid, even if he has a little Jeff Probst in him. ; ) And for the record, I still ask my teens who they sit with and everything else while they’ve been at school. I totally get the eye rolls and groans every time too.
And YUM! I love the chocolate and mint combination.
You’re not the only one–it’s totally a mom thing to do and that’s okay! My dad just kind of asks how I am and that’s it… but I secretly want my mom to ask me what’s the latest gossip and stuff… she’s good at that :)
And these look delish! Reminds me of the fudge double-mint cookies I did on my blog just a couple weeks ago! Great minds think alike.
I don’t think men understand our need for information in general. I’ll ask “Why didn’t you tell me so and so?” and I always get “I don’t know, I just didn’t think about it.” I tried to explain to him that I will try to be understanding of him thinking trivial things aren’t important enough to tell him if he will understand that I have a hunger for information. I seriously doubt that exchange will help things in the future, he’s probably already forgotten the whole conversation even though it was only two days ago.
NO football for my boys either. It truly makes no sense…like boxing or wrestling. WHY?
These cookies on the other hand make complete sense.
Love any sort of chocolate cookie! I have girlies, so no worries about football…… but my 7 year old does always seem to end up in the nurses office with an ice pack on her from getting hurt on the playground.
I have a weakness for holiday colored and flavored candies- put them in a cookie and I am done for!
When my son was young he was dying to start pee wee football. When I picked him up after the first day of practice, he said “Mom, They’re actually trying to hurt me!” That was the end of his football career:) Smart boy you have there!
YUMMY cookies!
You have one sophisticated little man!
Now excuse me while I steal those cookies and live happily ever after.
I ask my daughter everyday what she did and I’m lucky if I get a straight answer… Most of the time I get “Nothing”! Which leads to me asking “Did you eat?” NO! “Did you stit?” NO! “Did you breathe?” NO! So, I can only assume she stood in the corner holding her breath and starving all day… Not sure I”m getting my money’s worth at the private school….
I just had this same conversation this afternoon with my fourth grader. He said he doesn’t play with anyone at recess because they’re all playing football and he doesn’t now how. I too am obsessed with everything they do, see, eat and learn during their school day.
Genius! I’d play that if I were still in school!! Except what happens if I get voted off? And more importantly, do I get a million bucks if I win?
Too funny! Kids are so hilarious! Funny to see how popular culture creeps into kids’ imaginations
these look so good! and I have loved following along on your instagram feed, too :)
Finding out every single detail of school life is one of our duties as a parent…or at least as a mom. :) And, these cookies look absolutely amazing!
Gotta love boys! I have a 6 year old. I am so not sure how I feel about him having his own life for 7 hours a day. It has been going on for 1 1/2 years, but I am still not really ok with it.
My son on the other hand loves to play football. But they aren’t allowed to tackle (thank god!)
maybe Jon David will be the next Mark Burnett. Love it. Oh and mint and chocolate are one of my FAV combos ever.
I love anything chocolate and mint……….which reminds me, I have some chocolate mint cookies in the fridge still to roll out! lol
Honestly, you are so funny. I love, love, love your writing style (you), and it’s just a bonus (but an awesome one, obviously!), that you have photos of delectable and pretty treats, and recipes to boot.
xo
Thanks Marian. I think everything you touch turns to sparkly magic, so the feeling is mutual ;)
I just realized I have NOTHING mint and chocolate on my blog. What is THAT all about!? These look scrumptious and now I’m inspired to make something minty. :)
We need to fix that. Soon!! Chocolate and mint is one of my all time favorites!!
Mint and chocolate-always a great combo!
oh my gosh! we ask our kids the EXACT same questions!!!!!! and those are about the ONLY questions i’m ALLOWED to ask :-). and if i ask too late in the day, some how, my daughter (she’s 9, my son is 7) some how, she forgets everything she has done during the day.
ok, here’s a game for jon david (no, i did not make this up, and for some reason, the kids think it’s a great game to play at recess) – it’s called “toilet tag.” yup, that’s the game. the person that is it has to chase people and if they tag them, they become a “toilet.” in order from them to become “human” again, someone has to come up to them and “flush” their hand (it’s hard to picture the flushing action without seeing the kids do it, but the hold their hand up by their ear, like it’s the lever, and then someone would come by and push it down, or flush it). yes, i am a proud mother of a toilet tag game player :-)
I just love your story! Now I’m curious how it turned out for your son. He’s a one smart cookie! Hope you have a very Merry Christmas!
When I was little my mom made a rule that when she picked us up my brother and I each had to tell her 3 interesting things that happened during the day. My brother, being a boy, thought it was silly, and of course I, being a girl, was happy to tell her every detail. ;)
I like the sound of these. Mmmmm.
I struggle to get the same info from my sweetie…I leverage her snack for details :) GREAT cookies.
You just reminded me that I do not want my son to grow up. And, I do not want him have a life apart from me. Does that make me a bad mom? lol!
I don’t even understand how a life apart from us is possible. I am convinced that my son spends his day at school crying in the corner, clutching a picture of me to his chest. The grades and playground tales are all a ruse.
lol!! :)
Dual Teams sounds like a great idea and your son needs to take some of these cookies when they start playing it. You know, for the winning team…bet the ole football playing side of the playground will want to join in real quick :)
I wanna make these so bad!!! I thought all moms grilled their boys when they came home!!!
Very cute and chic! :)
Hi! I love reading your blog, but lately I haven’t been able to view your pictures! Have you been loading them differently? It might be settings on my computer, but I don’t think I’ve changed anything and all your older posts work. I miss your pretty pictures!!! :)
I have no idea why!! I haven’t heard from anyone else having the same problem so maybe it’s something on your computer? I’ll try to figure out what it could be.
So strange! I use Google Reader and it used to work for your blog. Even when I open it on its own tab, it doesn’t work. Very weird. —Merry Christmas, by the way! :)
I must make these for the brother-in-law and nephew who looooove chocolate and mint together! :)
Hahaha! Great story! Great recipe too! I have a friend I am going to have to make these for.
