Nerf Party Cupcakes
So, remember last week when I made Tangled cupcakes because a reader emailed me and promised me fruit snacks if I would?
Well. She didn’t send me the fruit snacks, but that’s neither here nor there (in her defense, I didn’t give her my address because helloooo, odds are that at least ONE of you is a crazy axe murderer) but apparently she started a new trend.
Because not a day or two later I got an email from ANOTHER reader desperate for…NERF cupcakes. And THIS lady promised me candy!! Which, no offense fruit snack girl, but candy is a bit of a step up. Might want to up your game is all I’m saying.
Anyways, I obviously couldn’t say no. I mean, I already said yes to the Tangled lady so if I said no to Nerf then I’d look like I am prejudiced against Nerf (Which I sort of am, because I spend about half my time cleaning suction marks off our windows and moving the couch so Jon David can look for missing darts, but man is it fun shooting him in the face with those things).
So, I Googled Nerf cupcakes and honestly, nothing really good popped up.
Sad.
Nerf birthday parties are sort of a good idea. You’ve got crazy stinky boys, hopped up on sugar… the next logical step is giving them fake weapons to unleash on one another, right? So, it was settled. Nerf cupcakes needed to happen. For the good of humankind and birthdays everywhere.
Want to know how to make these? SO so easy.
You’ll need cupcakes. Frosted with bright orange and yellow frosting. I used my standard Buttercream Recipe, colored with Americolor Electric Yellow and Electric Orange. I drizzled some melted black candy melts over the frosting, just for some fun contrast.
For the targets, I bought a pack of cheap coconut cookies at Walmart and dipped the flat side in black candy melts. If you can’t find black, use chocolate or dark chocolate and color it with black candy coloring. I can always find candy coloring at Hobby Lobby with the candy making supplies. It’s oil based, so it’s safe for chocolate.
I cut the target rings from flattened Laffy Taffy. The green and yellow are the perfect Nerf colors.
The darts were super duper easy. And realistic. Jon David came home from school and thought I’d raided his supply. Which would serve him right for all the times he borrows my good fine tip Sharpies and forgets to put the lids on.
(I only like to write with fine tip Sharpies. I think it’s because I’m a delicate artist)
The darts are made from Pirouette cookies. Did you know I had never eaten a Pirouette cookie before? Those things are darn tasty.
Just cut the cookies, dip them in melted orange candy and let dry. Once the candy is set, attach a bit of Laffy Taffy to the bottom and dip in the melted black candy so that it covers the taffy and goes up the side of the dart just a little.
See? Easy.
Orange and black candy melts should be fairly easy to find this time of year. Sometimes Walmart even has them, so take a look where they have the Halloween baking stuff.
You can find a variety of candy melts (including black and orange) online at Sweet! Baking supply if you can’t find any locally. Click HERE to go to her candy coating page.
Enjoy the cupcakes, you crazy kids!!
Have a happy Wednesday and thanks for reading!!

Thanks for visiting my blog! I realize you could be doing more important things with your time. Like watching the news or washing socks. I hope you stay awhile. Much more fun than socks, I promise.

Gotta love nerf stuff. Honestly- they remind me of Eli, so I ADORE these! :)
They remind me of Eli too :)
I’m so excited as now I can suggest this theme to my son for his birthday as I couldn’t get him away from Pokemon! I love you blog so much, such great ideas and just love how you talk to each one of us like we are right in the room with you.
the targets are great! I never thought about making something about nerf hahaha
Super cute! I totally hate cleaning the rings off the glass from the darts too.
You have to be the coolest Mom ever, Nerf cupcakes, what my kids would do for a Mom who could decorate a cupcake.
Uber cute!!! Loved the idea.
How freaking cool are these!?
I’m with Kellie, definitely going to be a birthday party suggestion. I love them!
and I think even I could make them:-)
Absolutely awesome. My nephew will love these. I should probably show my sister before I show him though…
I follow you on twitter, and was really hoping you’d made a typo and actually made NERD cupcakes. I LOVE Nerds! They are deliciously crunchy and cute. (not people nerds, the candy nerds. I’m sure people nerds are…delicious..nevermind). Anyway, so I was slightly disappointed by this post, but then not really, b/c nerF cupcakes are pretty darn cute as well. Carry on….
She’s made NERD cupcakes before! Their amazing! I could stare at them all day cuz their so colorful! Look for them in her recipes! She made them a couple weeks ago! :)
How’d I miss that? This is officially my favorite food blog ever!
Where were you when my boys were little? In the womb?!!!
We are still all about the Nerf!!!
Love it of course! My oldest is just entering the Nerf stage of life. Yay me
You are so funny- I love reading your posts! My boys aren’t into Nerf yet….but these are so fun!
I have my own nerf machine gun for when wars break out around here, don’t mess with mama, she’ll blast ya! LOL, cute cupcakes!
Hugs
I’ll admit to kind of liking Nerf stuff. I raid my son’s and play when he’s not watching :)
These cupcakes are awesome! I am always looking out for fun birthday party ideas for my little men and I’m amazed I never tohught of Nerf. Everytime the family gets together at my sister’s, the kids all go running trough the house Nerf guns blazing, at least half way through the gathering. The darts are dead on. You are so stinkin’ clever!! Two very enthusiastic thumbs up. :)
I’m sorry, I really don’t mean to be dirty, but the darts look a little, um, inappropriate to me.
That is totally what I thought when I first logged on too! LOL!!
I’m sending both of you to the naughty corner and washing your mouths out with soap. Seriously.
besides the naughty aspect, they make me think of little legs cut off around the knee…the black part would be the foot/shoe.
Still adorable though! :)
i totally thought they were legs too! lol
thank GOODNESS i was not the only one. kristan, please use one of those delicious-smelling soaps from bath and body works when you wash my mouth out. like, warm vanilla sugar or something.
:)
You are so creative!! I love how you make a seemingly difficult project so easy!
You are so freaking creative!!! Love them love them love them! I can barely frost my cupcakes, let alone create magic like this.
With Halloween in mind, at first sight I thought the darts were witch legs:) FUN cupcakes, Kristan! I don’t have a trade deal, but I do have a giveaway going on…with candy!
Glad I saw that someone else noticed the resemblence to the “darts”! Loved the post though and everything you do….gotta go clean smudged circles off my son’s mirror! Darn that Nerf gun!
OH MY WORD!!! My son would freak if he saw these and then I would have to try to make them and would be sorely disappointed that they resembled nothing like these and then would have to nag you, bribing you with cake or something better than candy girl, to make me some. So I won’t show them to him.
these are pretty cool. Maybe my daughter will be a tomboy when she gets a little bit older and we can totally make these together. haha I might just make them for myself though……
on a more serious note, I know a couple of bloggers who have gotten P.O. boxes so that readers can send them stuff. That way you don’t have to worry about crazy axe murderers! Your readers can send you candy and awesome supplies and money maybe and you can get it all at a P.O. box. everyone benefits!
Love them they’re so cute! Except I can’t find any coconut cookies or pirouettes or candy melts or anything good on my side of town. SO… in order to make these, I’ll use Oreo cookies for the board, and stretched out Tootsie rolls with the little tip molded out, and I’m covering the top part in rolled out laffy taffy to make it different colors. :D Love your ideas! I never know what to do with boys except cars and trucks and swords and gooey stuff… boys are weird. And sometimes icky.
[...] posting the Nerf Cupcakes (which followed up the Tangled Cupcakes) I’ve gotten several more cupcake requests. And [...]
Timing couldn’t b more perfect. My son’s NERF bday party is 3 weeks away. And while I’m not making cupcakes, he wants cookie cake, those pirouette nerf cookies will make great party food. And they look simple enuff for a novice like myself. Thx so much!
Hi there,
I love these (and your website!) and am going to l attempt them next weekend for my son’s Nerf party. What tip do you use for the icing – is it a 1M – Wilton.
Thanks
Nicky
