Witches Cauldrons
One thing that a lot of people assume about bloggers is that we are all very computerey.
I assure you, this is not the case.
I am good at buying stuff on the internet. I can out-Google 9 out of 10 people. And those pictures that leaked of so-and-so or so-and-so (or sometimes…so-and-so WITH so-and-so)?
I can probably find them. Uh…not that I ever have.
But I am not good at technical stuff at all. The fact that I can log in to my site, type words and copy in links and pictures is a semi-miracle. And honestly, even that sometimes gives me a headache. Stuff goes wrong, or things delete themselves, and I go cry and eat myself into a Sour Patch Kids coma.
I’m seriously wondering if there might be another way to get my blog posts to people.
Notes? On notebook paper, folded up really cool with warnings like “4 UR EYEZ ONLY!!” would be mighty fine by me. Except for the pretty pictures would get all folded up, plus I’d have to find a speedy way of delivering them. No good.
Ooooh, or maybe I could do my posts in calligraphy on fancy parchment, have it rolled into a scroll, and delivered by an owl a la Harry Potter. Except for that I’m afraid of owls (One time, a huge moth was laying dead in my yard, and it’s wings looked like an owls face, so I thought maybe it was a weird alien owl and my son and I threw sticks and metal spoons at it from 10 feet away until my husband got home). So…I guess that plan is out too.
Telegrams could work. You could have my blog posts delivered daily to your door by a handy dandy Blog-O-Gram Reader. “I think a hobo lives in my attic STOP He has mini machine guns and knives STOP”.
That would be cool, yes? But I’d probably have to pay them and I doubt they accept Fruit Roll-Ups and licorice as payment.
So, I guess if I want to keep talking to you and showing you pictures of food, I have to learn to love my computer and not drop kick it to outer space. But just know that if you need to know about computerey stuff (besides where to find photos of so-and-so, or giving me money to shop online) I am the wrong person to come to.
However…there is a silver lining to this internet cloud. Because what I CAN do for you is show you tons of cool Halloween treats!!
Want to know how to make super creepy and completely yummy Witches Cauldrons?
Well, I’m so very glad that you asked.
First you need to make the chocolate cauldrons. I saw this method awhile back on Bakerella, who made Chocolate Peanut Butter Pudding Cups from the book Sticky, Chewy, Messy, Gooey Treats for Kids by Jill O’Connor.
I used dark chocolate candy melts, colored with a bit of black candy coloring. You could also use black chocolate melts, or any color of your choice.
You need to blow up one balloon per cauldron. I used smallish balloons (from a variety bag at Hobby Lobby) and didn’t blow them up all the way. Just keep an eye on them and remember that however big they are on the top is how big the cauldron will be.
Line a baking sheet with wax paper. Wipe the balloons down with warm water and dry completely, then spray LIGHTLY with nonstick spray.
Melt your candy in a bowl according to package directions. Just eyeball it, you won’t need much but you want enough that you can dip the balloon in and coat it decently. Spoon a small blob of chocolate for each cauldron on the wax paper, spacing several inches apart. Then dip the bottom of each balloon in the chocolate, just as far up as you want the cauldron to go. Stick the balloons to the blobs of chocolate on the wax paper.
Basically, they should look like this.
Place them in the fridge to set. Once they’ve hardened, pop the balloons and peel them off. Keep the cauldrons in the fridge while you prepare the pudding.
I made a small box (3.4 oz) of instant vanilla pudding and colored it with green. One box of pudding filled six cauldrons. Add some mini marshmallows, sugar eyes, or candy bones to make it extra creepy.
See how easy?
Make sure to keep these in the fridge until close to time for serving.
I bought the bloody candy bones at Target, and you can purchase royal icing eyes HERE at Sweet! Baking Supply.

Freaking brilliant!!!!! (was that too excitable? LOL) Thank you for such a great idea :) I can’t wait to try it.
Love these! So incredibly cool for Halloween. I’m totally with you on the non-computerey-ness!
so, so, so cute! love.
Pure Genius, so simple. Totally making these for my kids at Halloween.
What about a singing telegram? The are LOTS of out of work American Idol singers.
Love the idea of the cauldrons:)
Very cute idea!!!! I love them :)
Mmmmmm pudding…..I have a pudding deficiency……
Does your son (or you) watch Adventure Time? That was one of the very few times I paid attention…dude was stealing pudding…cuz he had a deficiency… lol I felt the exact same way, I could eat pudding every day :)
Dear Kristan,
I am also severely ornithophobic. Please please please do not send me anything by owl, carrier pigeon, or any other form of avian airmail.
Sincerely,
em
PS Your blog is pretty much the most hilarious thing on the internet.
PPS I have no idea why I wrote this comment in letter form. I HAVE read blog comments before and am completely aware that I can just write “sour patch kids rule, birds drool” and leave it at that, without having violated any internet communication conventions in a major way.
Super fun! My 5 year old can help with this project! Any treat the requires adding candy toppings and she is in!
These are so cool!! You are so creative!!
Love these! Would be fun to let the kids make the pudding and add the body parts (OK, I know that sounds sick…) but it’s Halloween, and it’s not like they’re REAL—are they?
These are adorable! My kids would love them :)
These are fun, fun, fun!
I want to host a halloween party just so I can make all of these fun desserts you’ve been posting!
I adore this idea! So cute!
You=awesomness!
Those are crazy cool!!
you know I love easy!! even better when easy is super cute!! Love these!!
Ok, you did it again! Love these!
super cute! and so glad I don’t have to buy a special bowl to make them….love using the balloons to make the bowls, and how much fun is it to pop each one after they set up? =)
Super cute! These would be fun with pistachio pudding, too.
So awesome! Love the idea… but darn it. I need a bigger fridge if I am going to be shoving balloons into it… maybe I can convince my landlord into upgrading our fridge for Christmas… and send her a bunch of lovely treats as bribes and then take pictures of all the lovely treats she could be having if only I had a bigger fridge… that would work, right?
These are wonderful! Thank you for the great tutorial.
what a fun idea! i am loving all of your Halloween posts…so inspiring! I’m going to a big Halloween party this year, so I need to come up with something super exciting to make for it!
Hi there, I just came from Cookies and Cup’s blog , your cauldrons are adorable. I also made some yesterday and posted them on my site, but yours are way better, I love the fact that you tinted your pudding.
Have a great week.
Omg..that is absolutely genius. And hilarious looking before the balloons are popped. Fantastic recipe!!
LOL, I have to say. I was walking around in Tar-jay yesterday, and I see these bones. And I think, “CUTE” and drop them in my basket. then I wonder what other kinds of people get excited about bloody bones candy. My FRIENDS that’s who!!!! These are adorable. My kiddos would LOVE THEM!
Love this idea….can I add some time saving tips for those not into the whole balloon, chocolate thing? I love the cauldrons. FYI- Wilton makes a “dessert shell candy mold” that might be a bit easier to use/make the chocolate cauldron part. It is a mold you just fill with chocolate that could double as a cauldron without blowing up balloons etc. Or- the dollar places often sell mini black plastic cauldrons in packs of 6. Making the pudding and putting it right in a plastic one would save time! Wilton also sells bone candy decorations this time of year too! Love the idea! Thx for the laughs! Mary
These are so cool! I’d never seen that balloon trick before – love it!!
Wow! When I saw the first picture, I would not in a million years have imagined that you made it from chocolate. It looked like it was a plastic bowl. great idea!!!
Such a fun idea!
Love it! I may make these for my 8th graders! I am sure they would love it!
That turned out so cute! I love it! Great job! I hope I am talented enough to make the balloon bowls.
totally friggin NEAT..I have seen that idea w/ the balloons and chocolate and have wanted to do that for so long..what a great idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel like all I ever say here is ,”Genius!” and “Amazing”" Well, no sense in stopping now. These are just so dang smart!! My kids would probably even clean their room if I bribed them with these! :)
Absolutely love the idea… I’m going to have to make some of my own… thank you for sharing! Vicki
I TOTALLY AGREE with your computer isssues…only because I have the same ones!! LOVE the cauldrons~ easy enough for someone like me to do ;~)

I love this idea but my candy melts were too hot when I dipped, popping several balloons that were covered with melt all over my kitchen!!! I hope the kids like them.
