Melted Witches
Dear Halloween Costume Inventor of the Land:
You are in big fat trouble, sir.
Seriously. You are disgusting.
Things have gotten to the point where I liken the “adult” section of the Halloween Costume Catalogs to the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition. Only scary and sleazier (Also, I really want to talk about since when does body paint count as a bikini, SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, but that’s a whole other post).
The other day I allowed my sweet 7 year old son to peruse a Halloween catalog that came in the mail so he could pick out a costume for himself. After deciding on the Headless Horseman, he excitedly brought me the book, claiming to have found the perfect costumes for my husband and I to wear while taking him trick or treating.
It was the Naughty Navajo and Chief Big Wood.
Of course, this is a family-friendly site, so we are going to just tell ourselves that this Chief was fond of giant trees, hmmm??? But needless to say, I made my child take a bath in hand sanitizer that evening.
It was a traumatic evening for everyone involved. We all felt dirty.
Obviously, you have been led to believe that Halloween is just a thinly veiled excuse for women to dress up like booby-licious minxes.
Well guess what? I am not a minx. I am not booby-licious. I just want to look scary and give kids candy. Can I do that?? WILL YOU LET ME BE SCARY WITHOUT SHOWING CLEAVAGE PLEASE??
That’s all that I have to say.
Thanks.
Your Biggest UN-Fan,
Kristan

These melted witches are so easy, and super cute for class parties. I even got my Martha on and made cute little bags to put them in!!
First, make your brooms and hats:
Make the hats with a Hershey Kiss and half of an Oreo. Put the filling side of the cookie down and stick the Hershey Kiss to the top with a bit of melted almond bark or candy melts.
You may remember me making these brooms for my Harry Potter Cupcakes. All you need are pretzel sticks and yellow Laffy Taffy. Flatten the taffy and cut it in half horizontally. Cut fringe into the bottom 2/3 with sharp scissors and wrap the un-fringed part around the pretzel stick.
Line a large baking sheet with wax paper. Melt some green candy melts and some dark chocolate candy melts (separately) in your microwave according to package directions. You won’t need much of the dark chocolate, just enough to do small spoonful per witch. I melted an entire bag of green, and had enough to do about 2 dozen witches, so use that to decide how much to melt.
Spoon some green candy on the wax paper and spread into a circle with your spoon. If you are going to bag these up later, keep the bag size in mind. You don’t want to make these too big to fit. Spoon a small amount of dark chocolate over the green, and swirl it with a knife.
Place one hat and one broom on each green/black melted witch. Place pan in the refrigerator to set.
I decided to be all crafty and make toppers for Ziploc Bags. I cut some cardstock to fit the width of the bag , folded it in half, and used my Cricut to cut the words “Melted Witch” and attach them. I trimmed the bottom of the cardstock with a Martha Stewart Halloween Edge Punch, attached a K&Company sticker (I bought them at Michaels…it’s called a Spook*Tacular Layered Accent) and stapled the top of the tag to the bag.
If you actually have a life and don’t have time for all that, you can either omit the bags all together, or make a simpler tag by writing the words yourself or printing tags on your computer. But I’m not very computerey, so I did it the old fashioned way. Also, I have no life, so I don’t mind sitting at my desk and glueing on words while I watch Grey’s on my iPad.
Whether your make fancy bags or not, these are simple and yummy and a lot of fun. Enjoy!!
Have a wonderful Tuesday!!

Thanks for visiting my blog! I realize you could be doing more important things with your time. Like watching the news or washing socks. I hope you stay awhile. Much more fun than socks, I promise.

you are an evil genius! i adore your posts. i adore your creativity. i love being your invisible internet friend. these are beyond the beyond. love.
Melted witches is awe some. And as the Mum to a 15 year old daughter, I second your opinion on costumes!!! Kat is 15 and very modest. She is having the worst time finding a costume that she likes.
Sooo completely adorable! My nephews are going to love, love, love these! Can’t wait to make them. Keep up the GREAT work, Kristan! I look forward to each of your posts. Today’s had me actually laughing out loud in my office. I got a few odds looks for it too. Apparently they didn’t expect me to be reading your Blog while at work!!
I love reading your blogs! You`re soo witty! I just recently started a blog myself and find my self reading yours for inspiration. Keep up the good work!
LOVE these!!! so creative and sure to win me the cool mom award when I make these for my son’s preschool class! how far are you into greys now?
Richard has started drinking again and Izzy is back. Hoping to catch up soon so I can start watching the ones airing now!!
These are fantastic! I’ve been looking for something cool to give my friends for Halloween. I think I just found it. Thanks
Okay, first of all, these little treats are beyond cute. You always have genius ideas. Second of all, when did Halloween become the trashiest day of the year? The whole sexy costumes concept needs to go away.
My son used to host the biggest Halloween Party in Town. A list of rules was included with the invite. Number 1 was, “No inappropriate costumes.” He kept a stack of T-shirts by the door & if he felt any costume covered too little, the guest was invited to select a T-shirt to cover it. In over 10 years of hosting these parties, he only had 1 guest refuse. That one’s parents were called & she was sent home. The parties avaraged 50 to 75 kids & were the talk of the town.
Oh I love these! I’ve just discovered your blog and I’m in awe of how creative and how funny you are. These are the best!
What a great idea! The kiddos will love this! Btw – yea… costume stores are the bane of my existence. Finding a costume for a 12 yr old girl is a nightmare…. thank goodness my daughter has a sick twisted mind like her old mom. She wants to be creepy scary so we make them from scratch. My son (who is a little older than yours) will do anything I say as long as candy is the final result.
Oh my gosh, I KNOW! The Halloween costumes just keep getting worse and worse. I am thankful my sister is into Harry Potter and will be going as a Hogwarts student!
I love this idea. It’s going to be a big hit with my girls.
LOVE this idea!!!! And I completely agree with the Halloween costume thing. I feel like I can’t take my kids down the adult costume aisles anymore. Heck, some of the costumes for little girls are over the top!
This is AWESOME. I’ve already earned the stares from the other moms at my daughters school being “that Mom” who set the bar too high by hand drawing treasure maps as my daughters birthday invitations…
So I can’t wait to go over the top for Halloween as well! :)
Oh and totally agree with the costume. I have decided that henceforth (yes I said henceforth to my husband and 5 yr old) I will be making everyone’s costumes!
Love these treats… super duper creative!
… … … … …
I think you already know how amazing you are? This is utter perfection. I think I will throw a party this Halloween JUST TO MAKE THESE CANDIES.
[and I agree wholeheartedly about the Halloween costumes that are slathered in those catalogs... really? Do we need a "teen goth girl" trend to go around?]
At least your boy’s costume is tasteful. Does it come with a horse? Hehe!
this is so cute and creative! how do you come up with this stuff?!
I am beyond in love with these. so dang cute and creative. and I laughed about the costume name for your husband. What are these people thinking. On a good note, i actually found 2 (yes 2!!) modest costumes last year – I bought them both
You are a genius!
What more is there to say!! :-)
xx Kat xx
Those are really cute. Love the tags for the bag too!
Love these!! I guess we now know what you were up to with your cricut. I have to keep these melted witches in mind for my boys’ school Halloween parties in a few weeks.
Big Chief Wood. Awesome.
These treats rule the world, btw.
Thank u so much for the laugh! I needed this today! Can’t wait to make these ;-)
This is why you are on my “favorites”!!! Right on!! Glad you had plenty of hand sanitizer!!! LOL!!!
Your melted witches are adorable – now THAT is what halloween is all about!!! :)
You’re either in a slutty nurse, cop, or wench OR covered hear to toe as a cow, a giant whoopee cushion, or crayon. I hate adult costumes! I love these witches!
I am a college student and even I don’t do slutty for halloween. A lot of my friends do but I don’t judge…well, not that much. I’d rather be funny. It’s a better conversation starter than hey, look at me and my overflowing chest.
Ziplock bags instead of those cellophane treat bags was such an *AHA* moment for me. Duh. If you’re going to do the paper on top, of course that works. Thanks for helping me be smart :)
Martha Stewart’s Halloween issue has some good costume ideas for adults that arent skimpy, sleazy, or slutty! I bought it the other day so I’m sure it’s been out for awhile and will be out for awhile.
These are seriously so creative!! And this makes me glad that I don’t have any Halloween catalogs coming to my house. Yikes.
I love your posts and get a lil angry on days that there isn’t a new one. Lol!! j/k cause I can’t even catch up with the last post. It was looks and neat and easy and I don’t even get to do it before you post another neat-o. Thanks for the laughs and inspirations.
Those are so cool!
Absolutely adorable! What a clever idea. :)
Halloween costumes don’t even touch the surface of what is wrong with the marketing techniques of clothing manufacturers, especially those targeting women and young girls. I’m biting my tongue so as to not go on a rant so I’ll just tell you how fun these melted witch treats are.
These are genius! I could also see these for a Wizard of Oz themed party.
Love these Kristan! What a FABULOUSLY creative treat!
Hi. I am a new subscriber to your site which I think is very cute, interesting and entertaining. I, too, don’t have much of a life since I am now retired and renovating a home. Reading your notes provides a great respite during my day! Thank you. However, being a nit picker and an English major, please use “I” and “me” correctly. You wrote “perfect costumes for my husband and I”. It should be for my husband and me. The grammatical rule is simple; leave out “my husband”. You would not write “for I”, would you? “Me” is correct no matter how often you hear people slaughter the language. Rule applies to he/she and her/him as well. I know people think using “I” in this case makes them sound smarter; it doesn’t. Listen to how many teachers make this mistake. Hope you are not offended but I am trying to change the world one person at a time!
No, I don’t think using the word “I” makes me sound smarter…it’s just how I talk. But thanks for the English lesson, I will surely take this into consideration.
Or… you can not take it into consideration and just keep talking how you want. It is your blog and all….
Keep the grammar lessons to the classroom… and the fun stuff on the blog. :)
Gail — one of the great things about blogging is that you don’t have to be perfect. Sometimes criticism (even if you’re trying to give constructive criticism) isn’t the way to go. Love your bloggers even though we sometimes use incorrect grammar. I don’t never make mistakes myself ;-)
lady,
this aint a classroom! geez! if you want people to talk t=like YOU talk, then go to a shcool! like julie said, “just keep talking how you want. it is your blog and all”.
Totally agree with you about the horrible halloween costumes! I saw a costume catalog the other day with “Sexy Goth Cheerleader” as a TODDLER costume! Seriously?
Love the melted witch cookies. You are so creative
Oh my gosh. I have a little baby girl and I CANNOT imagine seeing that in the costume section. It’s things like this that make me scared to raise a child in this world. I can only hope that we raise her right and she can change the world later, but it may be too late. So sad.
These are soooo cute! I might have to make them!
This is simply darling!
I love your creativity, and your hilarious posts! Thanks for making me laugh! And oh, I am TOTALLY with you on the whole costume thing….. grrrrrr…..
That is a very creative and adorable idea! And pretty easy, too! I love how you include all the different elements. I just kept thinking “I’m melting!!!” when I looked at it. Great job! Love it! Pinning it!
Ooooh, I looove being “Pinned”!!
Are you having any trouble pinning? I couldn’t get mine to work last night and it still seems to be hit or miss today…
Amen!
I love how simple and oh, SO ADORABLE these are! Very creative!
LOVE! LOVE! LOVE THESE!!!! So happy I found your blog, the only down side is now I want to make everything!!!
Freakin’ genius. Genius! I’ll post on ediblecrafts.craftgossip.com tomorrow :)
Thanks Meaghan :)
Absolutely love these! My baby girl is actually going to be Dorothy and my little man is going to be the Scarecrow, these will be perfect for them to deliver :) Thanks!
Love these! Can’t wait to make them!
I totally agree about the sleezy Halloween atire, be thankful you don’t have a teenage daughter. That is a whole other set of troubles. Love the melted witches.
I LOVE this idea! So cute!! I can’t wait to try it! I’m sooo happy I stumbled upon your blog, it’s now one of my fav’s! :D
Yay!! Thanks for reading :)
SUPER cute! Absolutely LOVE them! Just pinned them! :)
These are adorable!
You have given me a good laugh this morning which has earned me some stares from the people around my desk at work! Love the treats too.
Aww~ I love those! I wanted to make something similar, but with spiders.
I think I need to stop perusing foodie blogs! they are all so dangerous! LOL Especially as we head into my own primary baking/cooking time of the year! But these? are so darn cute!! love them!!
Thanks for these.
I think we should go back to the days of making our own costumes which is what we did here in Scotland when I was young and that was the main part of the fun !
In fact my Uncle remembers guising wearing his face blacked with coal way back 80 years ago here.
Ok this is my 3rd comment on this post (and last, I promise!) :) How do those cricuts work? My husband wanted to buy me one last year but I said no because I didn’t know what it was lol But now that I see so many people using them and making really cute stuff — now I want one! :)
So cute! And I’m with on the costumes. You can get a super cheap slutty costume. Or spend a small fortune on something that is actually half way appropriate when around small kids, but to wear something once that isn’t going to happen. I sure hope things change by the time my daughter is a teen
Oh, and I didn’t even notice your improper grammar
my gosh the fun never stops here!
Wow. You are so talented. Those are adorable!
I discovered your blog a rew months ago. Love it! You are very funny. The melted witches are a fantastic idea. My sister has a pumpkin carving party every year. These would be an awesome addition. I’ll have to give them a try. Thanks for the laughs also.
This is tooooooo clever! I love it. (And I am right there with you on the Halloween costume issue. What the what? The good news is that adult costumes are usually pretty easy to create using stuff you already have at home. Like a witch hat and a black dress and a broom…since I know you just want to be a witch anyway ;).)
You make great desserts. I love your creativity. These witched would make the perfect treat for my sister’s birthday October 31st.
Have a great day :)
LOVE these melted witches and the super cool bags! What a fun idea! Where do you come up with all this?! Love the funny post as always too!
Amen about the costumes. And I LOVE the idea of these melted witches. it would be fun on top of a cake!
Cute idea!
I too laughed out loud at work when I read your post today and I too have you in my “favorites” – I check your blog every day.
You are a witty lady and people like me appreciate people like you : )
Seriously genius! These could not be more adorable!
If this isn’t the cutest thing ever! Ever!!
you are amazing. that is all! :)
Love this idea and I’m totally right there with ya about the costumes. My husband and I went costume shopping a couple of years ago and I swore never to go back because all they had were skimpy costumes for the girls, and they had dressing rooms set up and I saw 12-16 year old girls trying on the skimpy costumes, letting their boyfriends go to the dressing room with them. It makes me sick to my stomach. I think there needs to be a point where some guidence comes in, because there are a lot of parents that don’t seem to care.
Hey! Can you make a book already?!?! And go on a fabulous book tour so we can all idolize you in person rather than over the net? Number ONE on the NT Times bestseller list for sure! Those darn publishers need to call you like…yesterday!
You are too clever for words! What a great candy! I completely agree with you regarding the Halloween costumes….they’re sleazy now!
These are so deliciously cute! How fun would these be as part of party treat bags.
I seriously need to dust off my Cricut and my scrapbooking supplies. My creative side has been dormant for far too long.
I’ll get you my pretty, for making this cute version of me.
Can’t wait for next year when my grandson will be old enough to enjoy Halloween….adding this to my Halloween party list.
Love these~
so cute…just like everything you create!
Love the little broom~
I can ONLY imagine how much fun you are on HALLOWEEN!
xxoxoxo~
Happy Day Sweet Pea!
Oh my goodness, Halloween costumes. I gave up two years ago after seeing that the entirety of the women’s section in three different Halloween stores contained nothing to cover one’s thighs other than fishnet stockings. I wear my renaissance fair dress on Halloween now. If there were room in this apartment for a sewing machine, maybe I could be more creative than that.
Oh well. The witches look delightful. When you use candy melts, is it possible to substitute melted white chocolate and food coloring? The candy melts at my local craft store don’t appear to be kosher.
I know this question is not really for me, but…I’ve used melted white chocolate and those concentrated gel colors that Wilton makes (which Amazon is telling me are available in a kosher version). I read somewhere specifically not to try the liquid colors because they won’t mix with the chocolate. The gel did ok; I understand paste would’ve been better. The colors weren’t as vibrant as candy melts and they were a little mottled, but in this application I can’t see how that would matter! I hope that helps :).
They make candy coloring. It’s oil based, unlike food coloring which is usually water based and will mess up your chocolate. So, if you’re going to color white chocolate, I recommend going to your hobby store (Michaels…hobby Lobby) and buying candy coloring from the candy making section :)
Thank you both!
Melted witches … how clever! They are so cute and simple too.
These have got to me the most clever Halloween treats I’ve ever seen…seriously. I’ve bookmarked them & I will definitely be making them this Halloween!!! LOVE!
And I would love for you to share them at my Everything Halloween party starting this Sunday!
http://midwesternsewinggirl.blogspot.com/2011/09/everything-halloween-preview.html
Thanks so much!
Halloween is my least fave of the holidays and it is because of this… so many wildly inappropriate costumes and things for kids.
Your little witches are such a fun idea!
Bwhahaha! I’m not touching that with a ten foot pole. Ummm…scratch that {red cheeks} Can I just give you a high five on this post. Now when I was 20 something I would have vehemently disagreed but then I grew a brain. I am in L-O-V-E with your melted witches!! I can’t wait to make them with the monkeys :D {{hugs & kisses love}}
Oh my! Too too funny!! I have to agree with you in the disapproval I have regarding the scandulous (maybe Gail above can correct my spelling for me) Halloween costumes! I’m just picturing my son doing that 5 years from now, too! At least I have a heads up from your experience!
I also greatly disapprove of the insanely CUTE kids costumes out there that are ridiculously expensive (can somebody say Pottery Barn Kids?) yet they wave them in my face, tempting me to buy them. I can’t, I won’t, and I will find a way to make them instead! I just wish my mom would’ve taught me to sew!
Very impresive! They are unique, cute and easy.
Ah, the powers of social networking. Someone on facebook liked this post and having a 5 year-old, I couldn’t resist visiting. Now I’m hooked. This is absolutely perfect for a kindergarten class. Ok, it’s perfect for the kindergartners parents and co-workers as well, but who’s thinking that way. Thanks for taking the time to walk us through the steps and sharing your Halloween genius with us. I, like others, have pinned this. It’s too cool not to.
I’m embarrassed to write that I still can’t watch that movie all the way through! It has terrified me since I was a 4 year old munchkin and had nightmares for years! Total dork, I know.
I now believe that I must make these and eat them all In order to rid myself of this paranoia! (did that sound authentically doctorish enough?)
Such an adorable idea!
WOW! These are too cute. Just found your blog today and <3 it. Looking forward to catching up on all your content! And making some delicious desserts while I'm at it…
These are super awesome & I’m totally going to copy you! Thanks for the tutorial. They are so cute!!
Awesome site! Love your humor and creativity. I’ll be back for more!
This is an amazing idea!! You are so clever. I love perusing your site, and I get lots of fun ideas, even though I don’t have any kids yet! You can bet when I do have school age kids, I’m going to be the coolest mom around thanks to saving up all your ideas :)
hi,
i was thinking that it might look more like a witches hat if you coated the already coonnected hats in chocolate and maybe put a strip of grreen laffytaffy around it for the band it would look even cuter. do u thibk so?
I agree with you! Try dressing up a 5’4″ 10 year old in a costume that does NOT look like a hooker. She just wants to look like a kid dressed up for Halloween. I had to throw away that catalog that we got in the mail. It dressed up girls her age to look like prostitutes.
I just discovered your blog via bakingdom, and I’m delighted to have done so – so many clever ideas in a witty package. I completely agree on the stripperesque halloween costumes – I worked in a school that made a big deal about world book day, and trying to find a school appropriate outfit for character day was nearly impossible without making it yourself. Apparently red riding hood was a bit of a goodtime girl :)
Three cheers for you and your costume comments! It does seem that for women Halloween means bring on the hoochie. It is appalling what children are exposed to at quite a young age. We could start with checkout stands at the grocery store. Perhaps another day. Sports Illustrated? How about sPorn Illustrated? On a more positive note I loved your melted witches and plan to make 25. Thank you for sharing such a clever idea. I look forward to seeing more. thanx again
It is an awesome idea to spend you free afternoon. What made me extremely happy was the face of my boyfriend when he saw the surprise!
These are super cute!

We also used orange frosting under the kiss so it would stay and also give the hat a brim..the book had tons of ideas even coated bugles if you didnt want to use kisses!

Thanks so much for this clever how-to…I’m going to make the Melted Witches for our Community Theater’s Wizard of Oz cast for opening night.

Ok, is this a joke? Is there is really a Martha Stewart Halloween Edge Punch? And this is something you really have and used? I live in a very different world. Your writing is clever and fun to read, though. Thanks for the entertainment.
GREAT GREAT GREAT idea!
You are a clever, funny writer (and I so agree about the costumes)!
Thank you, and your little dog, too.
Holy cow, these are the cutest things ever! Your story about the smutty costumes had me peeing my pants!!! Could. Not. Agree. More!!!

Love these melted witches! I have to ask for Laffy Taffy advice, though. I find it hard in texture and hard to work with…do you have any suggestions? You didn’t happen to post a vide how-to anywhere, did you? ;)
Hi i just wanted to say OMG I love LoVe LOVE your site!!! i went to look for a costume yesterday and out of every single one i tried on (believe me there was ALOT) only two were not skimpy short or, ah, extremely uncovered. Sometimes i wonder what goes on in costume designer’s head…… and other times I’d rather not know. OH and you are a cooking Genius!!!!!! My whole family loves the idea (they rarely agree on anything food) and it’s gonna be a hit! Thank you soooo much :-)
