Jack Skellington Cupcakes
My son’s favorite Disney character is not Winnie the Pooh.
Or Lightning McQueen.
Not even Buzz Lightyear.
It is…Jack Skellington. From The Nightmare Before Christmas.
Two years ago, when Jon David was 4, we went to Disney World for our Summer vacation. It was a magical place, full of cute, warm, snuggly characters waiting to hug you at every turn.
Everywhere we went, there were gift shops with huge displays of bright candy and cute plush animals. And my child…my sweet, darling, 4 year old child….
managed to find the dark, skeleton-ey corner in every single one.
You know…the corner that is set aside for the teenagers who are too cool to be at Disney World? And I KNOW this was the teenage corner because there were no shirts even CLOSE to being in my son’s size.
My thinking is, it’s probably good that he’s getting this dark angst-ey time out of the way early, so it will save me a bunch of grief later on when he’s growing facial hair and pimples, which will hard enough to handle on it’s own.
The day my son has to shave is the day my heart will shatter into a million pieces.
SHATTER, I say!!!!
Anyways. I recently saw THESE cupcakes from THIS website, pinned on Pinterest. And I knew that I needed to create my own version of Jack Skellington cupcakes.
And then my son would love me forever. And never ever get old. The end.
These are super duper easy. You need cupcakes (duh) and for each cupcake, you’ll need one lollipop stick and one doughnut hole.
I bought plain cake doughnut holes from the bakery section of my grocery store. I then dipped the very tops of the lollipop sticks in melted white candy coating (you can use candy melts, almond bark or Candy Quik which is in the baking aisle of your grocery store) and insterted the sticks in the doughnut holes and allowed to set.
(Dipping the stick in melted candy keeps the doughnut holes from slipping off later)
Once the sticks are firmly planted in the doughnut holes, dip the holes in melted white candy. Then, place sticks in a block of floral foam or styrofoam until candy is set. Using a black food marker or black frosting in a piping bag fitted with #2 tip, draw faces on the surface of the doughnut holes.
Frost cupcakes, (I had 2 piping bags fitted with large open star tip and alternated black and white swirls) and insert a Skellinton head in each. You may have to trim the bottom of your lollipop sticks if they’re too tall.
Another way of doing this would be to use white powdered doughnut holes, and skip dipping them in white chocolate. If you do it this way, you will have to pipe the faces on with black frosting, since you need a smooth surface for food markers.
Easy!!
You can buy a giant star tip (like I used for frosting) HERE.
You can buy black food markers HERE.
Normally you can find a #2 piping tip (like I used for the faces) at your local craft stores. But if you can’t you can order one HERE.
If you need a good frosting recipe, click here for the link to a tutorial I did last year. If you’re doing more than about a dozen cupcakes, you will need to double the recipe.
These are one of my favorite cupcake creations yet, and I hope you love them too!!
Have a fabulous Tuesday and thanks for stopping by!!

Thanks for visiting my blog! I realize you could be doing more important things with your time. Like watching the news or washing socks. I hope you stay awhile. Much more fun than socks, I promise.

Love these! And your favorite Disney Character!!!
I love Jack Skellington. One of my favorite movies is The Nightmare Before Christmas!!! I so have to make these!!!
Oh too funny – your kiddo cracks me up! Love these skeeery cupcakes!
So darling! I adore Halloween & Nightmare Before Christmas! These cupcakes are getting me excited for it!
More than love. Not only did you make me feel better knowing my kids aren’t the only ones who love this movie, they think “I’m” so cool because I make all the cool sweets I show them online. I promise to have matching cookies by next week!
Did you say SHAVE? My boys will never shave. They will never grow up! I am DELUSIONAL!
adorable!!!! I want to go home and make some NOW :)
These are so cool! I love that you got the black parts really black. They look fantastic.
These are awesome!! What is your sure fire way to make black frosting really, really black?? Thanks!
A good way is to start with chocolate frosting. That way you don’t have to use as much black. For these though, I just started with white frosting and added a bunch of black gel color. Since I alternated colors, it wasn’t as bad as dyeing a whole batch.
Thanks, I’ll have to try that way next time! :)
Your piping is so perfect!! Love them!
Awesome post…esp since I am doing a Nightmare Before Chirstmas wedding cake at the end of the month! great inspiration, thanks!
Love these! My 5 yr old daughter also loves the scary corners in the shops at disney and perfers Jack over the princesses. Her birthday is right before christmas and these babies just inspired us to repace the usual princess themed party for a Nightmare before christmas party!
How fun!!
My girls love TNBC too! cute cupcakes K!!
These are great. I’m envisioning the the whole nightmare before Christmas crew-but then, I’m probably getting in over my head. ;)
Sigh yes I just put a jacket on my son this morning for the first time this season. He put the hood up and said, “Look Mom! I’m a robber!” Joy. I think I need a cupcake or 5 to eat.
My brothers and I loved that movie. These look awesome!
These are so cute. My 3 year old loves Jack too. They have shirts his size of Jack at the Disney store right now.
My favorite type of cookbooks are first and foremost, holiday dessert cookbooks. I like recipes that are not too complicated with pictures to compare my finished product. Thanks, Kristan!!!
I love any kind of baking cookbooks! I really love cookbooks that have these great recipes that make me look like a genius at any kind of event! lol. Your blog has helped me out in a big way! I really love reading and laughing. Thanks so much!!!
Fun! I love black and white everything!
Ahhhh I love those cupcakes!! So cute. Isn’t Jack the best?!
These are ao awesome! I have some friends who will go crazy for these!
These are so cute for upcoming Halloween!
You ARE the coolest mom. You are. Really.
These are so cute! Your son would LOVE this shirt that my mom makes over at Mother Goose Collections! She does a Jack Skellington Appliqued T-shirt and can do any size from newborn baby up to adults! http://mothergoosecollections.com/item_242/Jack-Skellington-Onesie-or-Tee.htm Here is the link to it if you are interested in checking it out. My son wore the onesie for Mickey’s not so scary halloween party last year when he was 3 months old and got SO much attention in it! I was very surprised, everyone loved it!
SO cute!!
Creepy. haha The Nightmare Before Christmas scarred me as a kid! Poor Santa! I blame that movie for making me such a well behaved child. haha I did not want to be fed by the boogeyman! Though now that would also make for an interesting cupcake! May have to make something along these lines for Halloween!!
Thank you for sharing your cupcake idea. Love it. I might copy it next month!
Hilarious! These are cute, cute, cute!!! And I bet he’s thinking he has the sweetest Mama in the whole wide world for indulging him Jack Skellington love.
Thank you for this wonderful idea! He is also my fav and would probly do exatly what your son did! High Five!
I look forward to trying it!
Such fun cupcakes!
What a little cutie…but please when he gets older and has to start shaving, please let him..because there is nothing worse then teenagers with creepy sparse mustaches ;)
I have to agree. And the only thing worse than a hairy son, is a creepy one.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE Jack Skellington! And these are completely awesome! I can’t wait to try them.
Adorable cupcakes! Love the photo of your son with Pluto and your caption insert.
My son also loves Jack Skellington… It is his absolute favorite. However he is 22 years old. I am still going to make these for him when he comes home next month. He will think it is great.
This son used to work for a bakery and is usually the cake decorator in my family, so he will be even more excited. You have great timing!!!
These are so cute and creative! I love that movie!
we just got back from disney…we have a 7 yr old and flew my 12 yr old niece to go with too…it was a blast but she is a bit old and “too cool” for all the disney stuff but she LOVES Jack Skellington…..she ended up suckering me out of some “dough” for a pillow, pen and shirt…now probably I will be making these cupcakes for her too….thanks, you are so neat.
Love these!! I love all things Tim Burton and Jack is my favorite character, I have collected many items from “Nightmare Before Christmas” and will now make these cupcakes!
These. are. AWESOME! I used to love watching this movie with my Dad (He obviously preferred this to the princess movies for the hundredth time- and I, a fabulous little daughter who loved her Daddy, was happy to oblige!)
My 4 year old daughter is obsessed with Jack and Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas. She has asked me to bake these for her, which I will do!! These are super cute!!!
Hahaha. Amazing cupcakes, I love them! Even if I don’t really like the Nightmare Before Christmas. ;-)
Aah, So cute! I’m going to come to you for all halloween tips this year since I finally live in a kid-filled neighborhood! woohoo.
I love these! I can’t wait to make them!
So creative! They will be a great addition to the Halloween dessert table.
Great desert for the kids! thanks for the tips!
My husband and I were just talking about how we need to have a halloween party this year and watch Nightmare Before Christmas. Thanks for the perfect dessert idea!
I can’t wait to make these for my daughter! She is 3.5 and loves Jack too! She has a stuffed one as her lovey. I am so glad to see I’m not the only one with a preschooler that loves him.
