Glamorous Witch Cupcakes

For most of my childhood, A Witch was my costume of choice on Halloween.

Boring, I know.  But it was safe, hard to mess up, and there were no grand expectations.  I mean…it is a witch.  As long as you’ve got a pointy hat and black clothing, you’re set.

Of course, there had been an earlier time when I had grander Halloween goals.  A time when I dared to dream of a beautiful costume– magical, sparkly and awe inspiring.  But like most good things in my life, Copycat Julie came along and crushed that dream, thus dooming me to a foreverdom of The Witch.

I know what you’re thinking– Julie already did enough damage.  It’s because of her that I force small children to eat candy, can hardly look at a pudding pop, refuse to grow my hair long and have panic attacks at the sight of purple sweat suits.

Surely it’s impossible for a 7 year old child to inflict such irreparable damage?

Think again.

It was the year 1987.  Huey Lewis was at the top of the music charts and Kirk Cameron was my future husband.  Fall was upon us and Halloween candy was hitting the shelves.  Life was good.

Being the fancy girl that I was, I informed my mother that I would be a princess for Halloween.

A PRINCESS!!!  I would spread beauty and sparkle everywhere I went.  Boys would follow me, dumbfounded by my beauty…handing over their best Halloween candy so as to have an extra moment to admire my beautiful costume.  Parents would stop and admire me, asking if I could teach their children to have my poise and grace.  It was going to be the best night ever.

So you can imagine my shock and dismay when  my mom decided that she would make my costume.  Herself.

MAKE!!!  As in using scraps of material and thread and such.  Surely this wasn’t neccessary?  SURELY my mother had more important things to do, like dust the furniture and make me Kraft Macaroni and Cheese?  But despite my many protests, she assured me that she was happy (HAPPY!!) to make my costume.

As luck would have it (LUCK!!) my mom happened to have a Royal Blue nightgown that she didn’t wear anymore.  Apparently the word Royal was all my mom needed to convince herself that this was the perfect attire for a princess.  Royal Blue!!  As in royal people!! She assured me that this would be fabulous.

At this point, I knew that my entire costume was hinging on the tiara.  I mean, anyone can make a nightgown work, if given enough sparkle to distract.  I refused to give up on my dream.  This was going to happen.  Kirk Cameron might even find out about my beautiful tiara, ask my hand in marriage, and I would live with the Seavers!!  I remained optimistic.

Right around this time, we just so happened to have a beloved pet bunny who had recently gotten stitches.  I could get into a long story about WHY he needed stitches (he was hiding under my bed and Copycat Julie reached under and dragged him out, injuring him) but the focus of this particular tale is the plastic collar that was placed around his neck to prevent him from chewing on them.

The same collar that, once he no longer needed, my mom determined would make the perfect crown.

She cut points into the collar.  She covered it in royal blue fabric and adorned it with bows.

This was my costume.

Of course, I knew my mom was doing her best.  Money was tight and she was a crafty lady…and although it wasn’t the costume of my dreams, I could make it work.

At least, that’s what I thought.

Until I saw Julie.

And her Halloween costume.

And after that, I was a witch.  Forever and ever until the end of time.

So…in honor of my witchiness, I made some glamorous witchy cupcakes.  Want to know how?

Pipe green frosting on your cupcakes.  You want a sturdy frosting (click here for my recipe) and a large open star tip.  Once you’ve piped a couple of good swirls, sprinkle with Heat Green Disco Dust.

For the hats:

You need one sugar cone per hat.  Using a serrated knife, gently saw the top inch off of each cone.  Dip cones in melted dark chocolate (almond bark or candy melts, your choice) and place on wax paper to set.

Once set, attach to a flat chocolate cookie.  I used Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafers, but even half of an Oreo would probably do.  Dip the top of the cookie in the melted chocolate, and set back on the wax paper, dipped side facing up.  Place cone on top and wait until set.

Dab a bit of melted chocolate around the base of the cone and attach sugar pearls to make a cute band around the hat.  Or it, if you actually have a life,  you could skip this step.

Place hats on top of sparkly frosting.  You’re done!!

To buy Green and Pink Sugar Pearls click HERE.

To buy a large Open Star Tip click HERE.

So now that I’ve given you the instructions and where to get the materials for these, you can totally copy them.  Please just don’t make them better than mine, though.  I may never fully recover.

Have a happy Monday and thanks for stopping by!!

I think we must be around the same age. Love Kirk Cameron and Jem!!! I tried to do a homemade Jem Halloween costume one year, fell completely flat.

Kristan, love the witch hats…and I don’t think you’re a witch at all. LOL

I hate that Copycat Julie has the same name as me! :(

It was really difficult explaining to my now-husband why my mom had Halloween photos of me dressed as a hooker when I was 10. Yes, a hooker. I don’t recall whose brilliant plan that was, but…um…yeah. Great.

I was usually a witch, too. I always tried to make it extra scary and it NEVER worked! One year (I think I was in 4th grade), I convinced my mom to let me get some wax to make warts and some green hair spray. Both were disastrous. The wax wart fell off and melted INTO my very long hair and later had to be cut out, and the green hair spray didn’t do anything to my naturally black hair color-wise, and the next day I had a terrible rash on my scalp and neck. I was not a happy trick-or-treater.

The only way I knew it wasn’t me writing this very post was because that wasn’t me in the photo.

I wanted to be a princess my whole life… the puffy skirt, the layers of tulle, the glitter, the gold, all of it. I always ALWAYS wanted a dress like what they now sell in the Disney store. Even for my friend’s birthday parties, I wanted to have a poofy, pretty party dress.

My mother thought they were tacky.

I knew if I asked to be a princess for halloween, then I’d get my poofy way.

She also thought she could make such a thing.

So she bought so gold fabric (you can see how it started off on the wrong foot), basically made a potato sack with a head and openings for my arms. Then she took some of that stretchy sequin trim and tied it around my waist. Same said fabric was tied around my head and she draped one of her strings of gold beads along it.

    I looked like a gypsy.

I was HEARTBROKEN. Every time she tried the smock on to see how it fit as she was sewing it, I protested, and told her it wasn’t going to look right. I told her what I wanted, and why this wasn’t it. She told me I would see, it would be exactly what I wanted.

    It wasn’t.

Ask me how many dresses my daughters have from the Disney Store…

Those cupcakes are so insanely pretty! I loved seeing you as a little princess – and I must agree with the above comments (and not to be unkind to the other princess) but you were much cuter.

My mom made most of my costumes. One year I was a HOBO (cringe). She painted my 5:00 shadow with grey eye shadow. I can’t even look at those photos now.

Funny! I went as a hobo once too, except my Dad adhered coffee grinds to my face for my 5:00 shadow. We had to walk through classrooms in the Halloween parade and I remember kids saying, “what smells like coffee?!” Traumatic for a 5th grader.

My mom made me and my sister peter pan costumes one year, which I was all about until I tried on the completed costume, the day before Halloween. It was so short!! I guess I never really looked closely at Peter Pan’s attire. Anyway, I ended up making my mom cry by refusing to wear it…wearing my long flannel pajamas and going as Wendy instead (and of course my goody-two-shoes sister wore her costume and became the favorite child).
    Great memories. :)

I did a literal “GASP!” when I got to the part about your bunny being hurt by Copycat Julie. I know this was years ago and all, but I used to have bunnies of my own so I did that pet-owner thing where you imagine it happening to your own fuzzy babies and what your reaction would be.

    ANYWAY
I love love love the look of the cupcakes! The only thing I’d change if I made it myself would be the amount of frosting. I realize it looks beautiful, but inch-high swirls aren’t to my particular taste. So I guess my witches would look partly melted. ;)

PS: I actually think your costume was prettier than hers. Hers just seems very drab and un-colorful from the picture.

I now live in Maine and my daughter wants to be Jasmine (belly dancer costume) however it is soooo cold here in October. The witch was my go-to costume as well. Like you said – it’s a pretty easy costume! When my oldest was 3 she had a tough time deciding on a costume (children now a days are so spoiled, lol). She finally chose the witch. Yes! Here was my chance! She actually wore the shirt of one of my old witch costumes (my mom keeps some weird stuff) as a dress. I got the cutest orange and black striped tights (didn’t have that kind of cool in my day) with a glittery broom and hat. Awesome! No boring witch here! Then I looked at the photos from her class party. I was THAT mom! I sent my child to the church preschool dressed as a witch, and she was surrounded by Disney princesses. I will pay for that therapy later!

It’s late…..well early but I wanted to get the blog up for your cupcake. You’re very own princess costume with a REAL princess hat…*giggles* http://www.baking-in-heels.com/2011/09/princess-costume-for-kristan.html

You really do inspire a lot of us. I started my blog because of you and a few other bloggers that I read daily. I’m just starting out, but I think it’s coming along okay for a beginner. Thanks for sharing all your witty stories. They really do brighten everyone’s day.

Kristan, the minute I saw these, I thought of Wicked. You should totally come back to NYC to visit, we’ll make these, and then you can take them to the cast of Wicked, who will be so enthralled, they’ll ask you to stay in glamorous New York and introduce you to all the famous people. Jon David will be able to go to some fancy private school paid for by all the actors, and your hubby can just relax, living the high life as the spouse of the Broadway Baker!

I’m laughing out loud at this post! The picture of you in your costume is adorable. I’m sure the cat was actually relieved to be rid of the collar and I think that your Mom’s did a super job turning it into a crown. Real princesses wear crowns and tiara’s anyway…not the hat that copy-cat Julie wore…those were for ladies in waiting to the royal court. Yeah….let’s go with that :)

    The cupcakes are delightful.

P.S. You have the exact same adorable little smile on your face in the Hallowe’en picture as you do in your *Hey Guys* sidebar photo.

OMG…what a great story and the photo is priceless! the whole time I’m reading it I’m remembering my very FIRST
costume…my Mom made it too…and it was …wait for it…A…….BIG……PINK……PORKY PIG costume!
I was horrified, I cried and threw a huge tantrum and she made me wear it anyway..I never forgot and now at the
ripe ol’ age of 58 I’m still dressing up for Halloween in style! Every year I find an awesome costume and wear it and am so happy with myself.
I had a Copycat Julie (my name is Julie) in my life too…her name was Stacey and her parents had tons of money
so I could never compete in any way…but I’ll bet she doesn’t still dress up for Halloween!
Thanks for jogging my memory, it was fun.

It’s used by tons of cookie decorators and I’ve always been told it’s safe and non-toxic. I’ve had it on treats I’ve eaten with no problems. If you don’t feel comfortable, you can always use luster dust or sanding sugar instead.

I was Jem for Halloween one year too, I have pics to prove. My mom made my costumes too….purple crayon….Mime…..Princess, sorry I had a real princess hat and a wand, all made by my mom. I miss her making my costumes, maybe I can convince her to make my daughter’s (she’s 4 months old) I’m trying to come up with a really good costume :-) Your princess costume could be construde as a Queen and that trumps a Princess! Take that Copycat Julie.

Super cute cupcakes, I love the things you come up with :-)

Hahahaha! I love your Copycat Julie stories! Too funny!

I had three obsessions growing up:

    1. Jem
    2. Rainbow Brite
    3. She-ra

I actually got to be She-ra one year, but it was one os those craptastic vinyl costumes that were shaped like a garbage bag and tied in the back like hospital gowns. After Halloween, I thought I’d be clever and cut around the image of the She-re outfit, thereby having the real thing. Instead I had an early version of a wall decal. Minus the stickum on the back. I was devastated. And then my very own copycat went and got to be pretty much the best Rainbow Brite ever.

    *sigh*

I ended up being a “rock star” every year after that.

Anyhoo. That was depressing. I LOVE your pretty little witch cupcakes! So classy and witchy. Definitely gonna have to give them a try! :)

OK two things. I was never a witch but always ended up being a hobo or a gypsy. I for some reason must have had some nomadic tendencies I wasn’t aware of, but are just know recognizing. I hated Halloween and still do. My poor children.

Which brings me to point #2. I’ve ruined Halloween for them for many years now by making their own costumes. One Halloween in particular, both of my children wanted to be Star Wars characters. I had to talk my daughter into being Princess Leia rather than Luke Skywalker. Yes I’m a genderist (gender + racist) With my daughter set on her character, my son could beLluke Skywalker. I’m not sure what I was thinking, but we ended up getting plain white long sleeve shirts and leggings for their costumes and a pathetic wig I tried to put into big buns on the side of my daughter’s head. The picture I took makes them look like they are in a religious cult. Oh how I’ve scared them for life. I’m sure.!!!! Now I feel guilty and have to start now on this year’s costume to make up for the psychological damage.

I’m a little late to the game … I just discovered your blog about 2 weeks ago and I have to say, I’m a little obsessed. I am also a little bit obsessed with Halloween and making cute holiday themed treats. Which bring me to my point. You have officially make my week by introducing me to edible glitter! GLORIOUSNESS, buying some immediately.

I made these last week for a few families and they were a huge hit! I’m planning on making them with mini cupcakes for my husband to take to work on Halloween. It was so nice to have a list of where to buy things– a few quick clicks, a few bucks later, and I’m waiting for such a fun little package in the mail so I can make these up. Love them, love you! Thanks, Kristan!
