Candy Corn Meringues

I have recently become addicted to Grey’s Anatomy.

For a long time I figured that I had missed the boat on the whole Grey’s thing, because when I finally tried to watch it (a few seasons in), I didn’t understand the storylines and what was going on with who.  But then a couple months ago I realized it was on Netflix Instant, so I could watch from the very beginning.

And now I carry Grey’s Anatomy around on my iPad all day.

While I do my hair and make-up…I watch Grey’s.

While I clean…I watch Grey’s.

While I cook….I watch Grey’s.

It’s quite the emotional roller coaster, really.  I mean, that show is so full of ups and downs.  I’m crying one minute and freaking out and hiding because there is a tree trunk going through someone’s abdomen the next.  It’s hard to get anything done around here, if you want to know the truth.

Also, I have become at expert at diagnosing illnesses.  So…the money I’m saving in doctor’s fees alone makes it worth my lack of productivity.

I’d have to say that this is turning out way better than my Court TV obsession phase, because although I was able to yell “Objection!! Speculating”  or “OBJECTION!!  Leading the witness” whenever my husband and I were watching Dateline or 48 Hours Mystery, that really wasn’t very useful in my day to day life.

Plus it was sort of getting on his nerves (but if you ask me, he was just jealous of my smartness and courtroom saavy…I mean, I was practically a real lawyer).

Anyways.  Back to Grey’s.  What I am trying to say is this:

1.  Although I never did quite get over the whole Eric Dane/Rebecca Gayheart/Miss Teen USA video thing…Dr. McSteamy is definitely Steamy.

2.  Meredith needs to get over herself.  I mean, I know she has issues but really,  STOPBEINGALLDARKANDTWISTY.

3.  I am pretty much a doctor now.  Of course TECHNICALLY, I can’t FIX anything that is wrong with you, but if you give me your symptoms, I can most likely tell you the worst thing it could possibly be.  Probably.

Even though I’m all smart and doctor-ey nowadays, I plan on keeping my main job as a food blogger.  So…in honor of Halloween, I made Candy Corn Meringues!!

I’ve seen tons of cupcakes with frosting swirled on to resemble candy corn, but it occurred to me that I’ve never seen it done with meringues.

I’ve also never made meringues before this. Egg whites = sort of scary

BUT–I figured…I practically know how to do brain surgery now!! (thanks McDreamy) so surely this whole egg white beating thing can’t be that complicated.  Turns out…it isn’t!!  I followed this recipe from TomKat Studio and it was easy peasy.

Cheap, too.  A few egg whites…a bit of sugar…practically nothing.

**meringue recipe from TomKat Studio (but the candy corn part was all my idea, ok? I’m a doctor so…yeah)

You’ll need 3 piping bags fitted with a 1M tip and orange and yellow gel food color

INGREDIENTS

4 egg whites (it’s easiest to separate the eggs while they are cold…but let egg whites warm up to room temperature for best volume)

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar

1 1/3 cup sugar

Preheat oven to 225.  Line large baking sheet with foil.  Make sure your mixing bowl and whisk attachment to mixer are clean and grease-free.

In the bowl of your mixer, beat egg whites on high until foamy.  Add salt and cream of tartar and beat until soft peaks form.  Add sugar slowly over an 8 minute time period.  Once 8 minutes are over, your meringue should hold  stiff peaks.

Set aside 1/4 of the meringue.  Split what is left into two clean bowls and color one with orange and one with yellow coloring.  Fold coloring into meringue gently (do not stir) and stop folding as soon as it’s just barely mixed.

Put each color meringue in separate piping bags.  Pipe yellow rosette swirls with your meringue.  Top with a smaller orange swirl, then top with a white meringue star.  Bake for 1 1/2 hours at 225.  Turn oven off, open oven door about an inch, and let cool for another hour.

To see the Wilton video on piping rosettes, click HERE.

To purchase a 1M piping tip, click HERE.

I forgot to mention that these are so light and airy, they don’t even count as food.  Actually, I think they BURN calories when you eat them!!  (I have no proof of this at all, it’s just my doctorish opinion…keeping in mind that my Ph.D is from Netflix)

Also, it’s your lucky day because a few of my friends came up with candy corn themed treats of their own!!  Click over and check them out.

I came into the whole Grey’s thing late too, but absolutely think it is the best thing on TV now! I can’t wait till it starts again! Do you watch Private Practice too? I LOVE that as well…Taye Diggs should be McMelty or something like that… chocolate that melts in your mouth not in your hand? No wait that’s probably all kinds of wrong, forgive me. ;) hahaha

One of these days I will have to try the meringue thing, does seem easy enough…sort of…. everything you do is super cute though…

Yummy! So glad you joined the Grey’s band wagon. The only thing I find wrong when you finally discover a series and you spend a month watching every episode to catch up, when you’re done, it’s such a let down to have to wait a whole week for the next episode; sometimes a year!

I think we were separated at birth – just saying. I love Grey’s. I call it Grey’s because I am that close to the show and all. Honestly the best show ever. Meredith is totally self absorbed. It’s like she knows her name is in the title or something. I don’t know how far along you are but it gets annoying around season 3 I think but then kicks ass (can I say that??) in the next season. Between watching Grey’s and House who needs medical school? I am glad you are watching the show. It is that good.

I also love me some candy corn and your meringue’s are totally cute.

BTW – totally making your peppermint patty brownies right now except I just chopped them up and stirred them in the batter. So I am almost making them.

He’s friggin gorgeous, especially when he walks out in that towel when Derrick finds them cheating. I think Christina needs to get over herself as well, just sayin.

I LOVE Grey’s soooo excited it’s coming back soon :) although I have to say I think it may give me an ulcer with all the drama! I also LOVE meringues…this recipe isn’t cute, but always a hit when I make it! And I have no idea why they’re called Mary’s Kisses…

    Mary’s Kisses

3 egg whites (room temperature), 1/8 tsp. salt – beat until frothy.
Slowly add 1 C sugar, beating until stiff.
Stir in 1 tsp. Vanilla, 3 T cocoa
Drop by teaspoonfuls onto brown paper/cookie sheet. Bake 250 — 30 min.

[...] If you actually have a life and don’t have time for all that, you can either omit the bags all together, or make a simpler tag by writing the words yourself or printing tags on your computer.  But I’m not very computerey, so I did it the old fashioned way.  Also, I have no life, so I don’t mind sitting at my desk and glueing on words while I watch Grey’s on my iPad.
