So, you know that I love cookbooks.
Doi. (Yes, I still say doi. Sooo???)
I have hundreds of different cookbooks, but the ones I find myself using the most are ones that are simple. As much as I love elaborate recipes, they aren’t always practical for my day to day. So when I was contacted by Harvard Common Press about reviewing their Baker’s Field Guide Series of four cookbooks, I was really looking forward to getting them in the mail.
(Four cookbooks in the mail equals postal GOLD. Which, doi, of course you knew that already)
This series covers all the basics: Cupcakes, Holiday Candy and Cookies, Chocolate Chip Cookies, and Christmas Cookies. Each book is written in a “field guide” format and breaks down the details of every recipe.
And author Dede Wilson has written over a dozen books and is a contributing editor for Bon Appetit, so…she really knows her stuff.
The recipes look easy and yummy and cover a variety of occasions and holidays.

I like simple recipes with beautiful pictures. Plus the pictures help me see if I attempted and made something even half way correct
I love local recipie collections. Anything from a church, school, Women’s group… Not only do they have fun (and often meaningful) recipies, I also get to support a good cause with my purchase. Makes justifying “one more” cookbook easier with the husband too :)
I love our county’s 4-H cookbook they put out every year from the recipes the kids made at our cook-off!
I love simple recipes. Preferably desserts. And I love pictures in the books.
My favorite cookbook isn’t a cookbook. I use the internet WAY more than any of the cookbooks I have. I do have a couple of cookbooks that open naturally to a specific page every time I pick them up, though. My favorite recipe comes from Dave’s (Letterman) Mom’s cookbook. Asian chicken salad. Mmmm. And my Cake Mix Dr. book naturally opens to Darn Good Chocolate cake!

Oh my, if I had to pick a favorite kind I couldn’t!! They are my favorite reading material. And I LOVE to read!! I even buy murder mysteries that center around cooking. JoAnne Fluke is one of the best.
I love any kind of baking cookbook! My favorite is the Martha Stewart Baking Handbook! It has the most beautiful pictures and awesome recipes. It stays on a stand in my kitchen on display all the time. Me and my 6 year old daughter take turns picking which recipe we want to display for the week! :-)

I love all kinds of cook books, I will read them like normal people read a novel. My favorites tend to Cakes and cupcakes.

My favorites would have to be the ones passed down through out generations. Things were so much simpler and always tasted amazing even with such few ingredients. If I am buying the cookbook I love to have step by step instructions even a picture just like Andrea said.

Pictures…. colored pictures :-) I want to see what my “creation” is supposed to look like. After pictures I think my next must have is sweets. Id pick a dessert over a steak anyday…..and I love a good steak. Desserts are what make me happy…..its a double plus if they are easy recipes to make.

It HAS to have pictures. Not because I am stunned (well, I have my days), but because if I can’t see it, I can’t get interested in seeing the ingredient list. I am a visual type of gal! My FAVOURITE cookbook is the Good Housekeeping one that’s been around for as long as housewives have been cooking… it has everything from explaining basic tools and kitchen terms to recipes for every single occasion you might think of. I love it!
I’m a southern girl married to a Korean/Cherokee guy so Korean cookbooks are my fave! I collect all of the new ones I can find just so I can learn to cook more stuff that he remembers from South Korea.
My favorite recipes/ cookbooks are the ones passed down from generation to generation. It brings back memories from childhoods and also gives you an idea to what kind of people your ancestors were by what they liked to make. My mom used to bake with her mom, and now I’ve been baking with my mother! I also hope one day to bake with my son/daughter and pass down the cherished recipes in our family!

Those books look fabulous! I always flip right past any recipe that has complicated ingredients or directions, so those books sound right up my alley! And the pictures are gorgeous too :)

My favorite kind of Cook Book is one that specializes in Christmas recipes/craft ideas, like GooseBerry Patch.
My mom’s better homes and garden she got for herb wedding (married 35 years this year). Brings back so many memories, I love that book!
My favorite type of cookbook is cupcake cookbooks.
My favorite cookbooks are those full of Southern recipes passed down from generation to generation, although I have a fabulous 50s cookbook full of jello mold recipes and it’s pretty awesome as well not that I eat jello. I would seriously starve if I had to live on anything with that sort of consistency. Seriously.
I usually like vegetarian cookbooks but I’ve found that I’m creative enough to make any meat dish veggie with my own tweaks. SO lately I’ve gotten into more baking and like detailed candy or dessert cookbooks.
I really enjoy cookbooks with recipes that have been handed down for generations through families. They are usually tried and true and don’t require lots of fancy ingredients.

I love cookbooks with pictures (because part of the joy of cookbooks is just looking at the recipes!). I like desserts, cookies, squares and cakes/cupcakes the best. And I love Christmas themed ones. I must have extreme self-control when I see them as to not buy them all. Hehe!

I love home made cookbooks that groups put together that are a compilation of peoples favorites. Ya know..like all the PTA women give their favorite recipe…the one they are most proud of, and someone just copies them all and makes a little booklet out of them. You really find some tried and true recipes that way!

My favourite cookbook to read is one where I see and read about how everything is made. I like when they show you what the finished product could be, but doesn’t have to be necessarily. I like fun cookbooks that are creative, and not ones that have the same basic recipes!

I love any cookbook! I don’t cook a lot bc the kitchen is not the most natural place to find me. I prefer to be outside. So when looking at a cookbook it is like magic to me. It all sounds so foreign to me sometimes. I guess my favorite would be something simple, with fairly common healthy ingredients, that my kids will eat. Throw in a great picture and I just might try it. But I own a lot of cookbooks bc I always say I’m going to start cooking more!

As much as I use my dessert cookbooks with pictures, I love my old Betty Crocker from my Grandma! =)
I love dessert books…but honestly, as long as it has pictures of the end result and no more than like 10 ingredients I am all over it. :) I’m a visual cooker/eater!! If there is NO pictures….I won’t make it.
I love bread cookbooks. Baking bread is one of my most favorite things to do.
I just love the fundraiser type cookbooks, the ones where everyone submits their favorites. Nobody wants to look bad, so everybody submits something tried-and-true. (Plus, I get to feel noble for supporting the cause, soooo win-win.)

I’m mostly attracted to cookbooks with lots of pictures. It reassures me that I’m doing it right. But the cookbooks I bring out again and again are the ones with stories that accompany the recipes. I don’t find these along, but I love a recipe with a story behind it.

I am a total sucker for any kind of sweets cookbooks. I always dog ear the corners of all the recipies I try, then go back with the flags (like attorneys use) and flag the family favorites. There’s always a rolling if the eyes from the husband, and I have to counter each “goodie” recipe from a “diet” cookbook for dinner, but I’ve had a lot of good recipes come from those too.
I like cookbooks with pictures, stories behind the recipes, tips and tricks. I also really like when they have a chapter on holiday recipes that have cute holiday themes to them.
I love all sorts of cookbooks and collect them all! But my favorite are dessert ones! A whole book on chocolate chip cookies?!?! That’s great!!
My favorite type of cookbook is one that has simple recipes and great, well-thought out instructions. I love a good picture, too!

My favorite cookbooks are those with photos of each recipe. I love experimenting with new recipes and enjoy those old standbys with new twists. Appetizer and dessert cookbooks make up the majority of my collection.

I love to look at dessert cookbooks, but get most of my recipes from cookbooks with fairly traditional, easy, and simple recipes that my family will enjoy. Lately, though, I seem to be getting most of my new recipes from the internet.
I love cookbooks that have a variety of recipes that have truly been tested. Also a big must is it needs to have at least half of it with photos of it so I know what mine is “supposed” to look like.
I love thick cookbooks with loads of pictures of the end product. Got to at least know how it looks like at the end, right? Also, if the recipes require beating/mixing/marinading to a certain extent, then photos of these steps would be good for midway checking.
I’m too darn lazy for anything that is fancy throughout the whole cookbook cos I am sure I won’t be doing that everyday!

I absolutely love my mom’s Better Home’s and Gardens cookbook from the 80′s! Can’t live without it!
Even though I greatly prefer baking over cooking…. I LOVE to sit down with a cup of coffee and a cookbook filled with healthy dinner ideas (with pictures, of course!). I normally don’t follow recipes when cooking, but I like to get inspired by the ideas that I see!
I personally spend a lot of time looking up recipes online, then print them out, and put them in a binder to form my own “cookbook”. I spend hours searching for simple recipes that don’t call for crazy ingredients, but still turn out a great result. A must for me to deem it “print worthy” is LOTS of pictures and a step by step tutorial. Lately I have been on a baking craze. My son starts kindergarten on tuesday so I have been searching cool looking baking recipes (edible crayons, HELLO!) to wow the parents of his class. :) FYI, many of your recipes are in my “cookbook”.

I LOVE Junior League cookbooks (I was a Cookbook Chair for my League) and I’ve amassed JL cookbooks from all over the country. In addition to recipes, JL cookbooks provide entertaining tips, sometimes wine suggestions, and regional fare. What’s not to love?

My favorite cookbooks are holiday cookie cookbooks, especially Christmas. I love cookies, I love Christmas, it’s just a win win. I love looking at all the wonderful cookies that I will make and give to other people and think about the nifty and pretty ways I will wrap them to make them look even more delicious. Im actually a huge Alton Brown fan his cook books not only give you a recipe but he gives science and information behind them as well as variations, humor and awesome food.

I still use my 34 year old Better Homes & Garden cookbook for recipes and ideas! My daughter was upset I wouldn’t let her have it when she got married, so she got her own.
I love baking the best, so any cookbook that has sweets in it rocks my world. It has to have pictures though. Pretty much if there aren’t any pictures of the recipe, I’m not making it!

Although I am confectionery nut I love, love, love the Grandma’s Best Recipes cookbook. Every page sends me back to my childhood and each recipe is a simple, special, comforting, family meal! Just what my boys need at the end of a tiring day of working/playing/gurgling.
P.S There is also a wicked baked goods section in it (which is always a bonus!!)

I recently found your blog and its fabulous! My favorite cookbooks are those soft cover spiral cookbooks put together by groups. I feel like,those are tried and true recipes that you can’t go wrong with. I love to sit and read through them! They feel so personal.

I love cookbooks with lots of pictures and lessons, but my favorite cookbook that I can never resist is the fundraiser cookbook. Anytime I see a church, school, or group selling them I have to get one. A book full of family treasurers and real recipes can not be ignored.

I love cookbooks of all sorts and hope to pass them along to my daughters someday. My favorite books are the ones that came from my mom and grandma. I have one that my grandma made in a small note book that is my most favorite. It is so sweet to open it up at Christmas and make her favorite treats written in her handwriting. She is gone now but when I arrive to a family function and have one of Grandma’s treats in the box all her children get a big smile on their face’s. Thank You to my mom and Grandma for giving me the love of cookbooks and creating food delights!

I love simple and to the point cookbooks. And they absolutely have to have pictures. I am usually sucked in by the picture and then decide to make a recipe. Then you have a guide to see if yours even turned out vaguely similar.
I only have 3 cookbooks, but one of those is a 4 ingredient cookbook. Every thing has just 4 ingredients! That means that there is a slight chance that I will have all the ingredients and I don’t have to go to the store!
My ideal kitchen would be to have every ingredient available whenever I feel like cooking/baking… :) Oh, and I like lots of pictures too!! :)
I love cookbooks with pretty pictures in them. That way I can put them on my cookbook holder in my kitchen and look like I am a good cook plus an awesome housekeeper/decorator/grown up. That’s what I like. Oh, and I don’t love elaborate recipes…I lack patience and skills. So simple…lay it out for me recipes are best for me!

Quick and Easy are my favorite recipes these days! Cookbooks that use easily obtainable ingredients that I don’t have to make a major grocery run to get ready to make something! Would love some new inspiration esp. in the baking department.
For me, the first criteria I look for in a cookbook is PICTURES. I can’t stand cookbooks that expect you to try a new recipe with no idea of what it’s supposed to look like when you’re done! After that, it’s science. I like a cookbook that tells you WHY you need to do certain things so you can apply that info to other recipes. :)
My fave cookbooks are ones that don’t require wirdo, expensive ingredients that i’ll never use again. (This espeically happens a lot in vegetarian cooking.)

I myself am a professed cookbook hoarder….I mean collector! I love cookbooks of any kind but I tend to purchase alot of the homestyle cooking ones. I gravitate towards the pretty cupcake, cake pops, dessert ones now. I love your blog and enjoy your post because they are so witty. Cookbooks are my favorite reading materials. All kinds of cookbooks, but I do appreciate pictures of the finished product. If complicated recipes, then step-by-step photos. Love my collection.
The ones that have pictures. Cookbooks that are just page after page after page of recipes are nice but get to me after awhile. I need pictures of the food. Sometimes a recipe might not stand out to me when I read it. But if it has a drool-worthy picture with it I’ll give it a shot.
I like simple recipe books without the usage of milli0ns of exotic and expensive ingredients…and lots of pictures!
My favorite is the cookbook that my Nana passed down ( my grandmother’s aunt gave it to her) to my mother when she got engaged to my dad 40 something yrs ago. The pages are all tattered and the cover has been gone for as long as I can remember. But I love to just read it. It is so funny , it talks about the proper woman’s dinner party, tell you how to freeze cloud free ice-cubes , how to dress up a crudite’ platter w/ a lettuce lady.. The recipes are really wonderful, and actually maps out everyday’s menu plan (breakfast ,lunch, dinner, dessert)

My fave type of cookbook would have to be about Baking, so much so that no one was really surprised when I started taking culinary classes to become a Pastry Chef. Then to narrow it down even further would be CUPCAKES. Anything and everything to do with cupcakes. My favorite cookbooks are all about baking. And they all have color pictures associated with the recipes. I don’t like cookbooks that are just hundreds of pages of recipes but no pictures. Something about seeing a huge color picture of a red velvet cupcake or a strawberry pie just…makes it work!
i really like cute cookbooks with clear instructions, and pictures are good so i know if i’m headed in the right direction since i’m still kinda new to baking. ones with really creative things from really basic ingredients are great as well cause it’s hard to find some fancy stuff around here.
Any type really but my favourite would have to be anything cakes or cookies. Anything that can be made “prittee” as my 2 yr old tells me :)

I love different cookbooks. Right now I’m loving Pioneer Womans cookbook. It reads like her blog. I love it!
Hmmm….In my collection I gravitate towards cookbooks that recipes inside may require me to purchase 1 or 2 items to make or bake. Many cookbooks have ingredients that I cannot purchase locally or have never heard of. Of course my baking books are the most used and the overall consensus of other posts is we LOVE photos!! they are mini tutorials that really help if you are trying something new.
I absolutely LOVE vintage cookbooks! Some of the ingredients are so bizarre! Does anybody cook with mackerel anymore? You can tell a lot about the times from a cookbook. Some day people will look back on the blogs of today and wonder if we really ate so many cupcakes!
How could you choose just one fav? I love ALL cookbooks! To me, they’re as good as a novel. I do love going through my grandmother’s cookbooks, though. They’re like a history lesson.
My favorite cookbooks are ones with handwritten notes. I love to stumble upon a recipe with the words, “family favorite”, or “really yummy”. Books with beautiful glossy pictures are nice also. :)

Cookbooks are my novel. I don’t have a crazy amount and I’m more selective on ones I buy because I want pictures. If my eyeballs don’t get hungry, I don’t attempt the recipe. I definitely prefer baking over cooking and my family and friends don’t mind being my guinea pigs.

Cookbooks – where do I begin?? I love cookbooks with beautiful pictures and easy to read recipes. If a recipe is over one page, then I probably won’t attempt it. One of my favorite things to do before the kids get up on Sunday mornings is to pick a few cookbooks, sip some coffee, and flip through the pages.
When I’m in need of a recipe right away, I pick up my go-to books like Betty Crocker or Dinner Doctor. Short and simple is the way to go!

I love any great cookbook. And by great I mean the ones with great recipes, pictures and stories of how these recipes came about…..the Pastry Queen and all of her books are so fantastic…..she does an amazing job describing her passion for cooking and her story about how each recipe works in her life and business. She is very explicit in her descriptions of how fantastic the food is when it’s complete and also shares her failures and successes with different recipes. These stories make you appreciate those Texas fried pies all the more when they turn out AMAZING! LOL!

I love all cookbooks too! I don’t need anything but the recipe! I have cookbooks that date back to 1931 and have even made dishes from them. I inherited all my Mom’s cookbooks and I still use them, although I do prefer her handwritten recipes the most. I have a collection that makes me very happy…but I bought another one last week for Halloween ideas and recipes…oh well, I know I need this collection of four very much. My favorite cookbook is anyone that I can read like a book from cover to cover and the more pictures the better. One I’m loving now even without all the pictures is The Essential New York Times Cookbook: Classic Recipes for a New Century. Iti’s like a history of cooking timeline! Also love the Flavor Bible.
My favorite cookbooks have pictures of the finished product and of any “tricky” steps. I like recipes with ingredients I use all the time (or at least are familiar with!) that my whole family will like so I’m not stuck eating a ton of leftovers by myself for a week. :)

On a skinny day, I love dessert cookbooks that will satisfy my sweet tooth. Unfortunately, I’ve indulged in that type of baking/eating too often, so now I’m leaning towards healthier, low-calorie cookbooks that will help me whittle down. I like a lot of the little “specialty” cookbooks that you find at the checkout at the grocery store. You know, the ones that are all Halloween or crockpot recipes or Christmas cookies. I like that they have pictures of everything and are usually pretty basic recipes with just a little twist.
My FAVORITE recipe book is the old fashion Betty Crocker cookbook that my grandmother gave me when I was younger. It has so many back to the basics recipes that you can take anywhere with a little imagination. Plus, this is the cookbook that, like you Kristan, started my addiction to collecting cookbooks. I have HUNDREDS!!

My favorite cookbook is Pillsbury’s Complete Book of Baking. So many good recipes, old Pillsbury bake-off winners, and history behind some of them. Growing up we used to have a huge McCall’s book that I can’t remember the name of, but I got my cheesecake recipe from it. I can’t find that book for anything now, but I made that same cheesecake recipe so often when I was a kid (every Thanksgiving) that I memorized. Thanks for the contest!

I love local cookbooks that compile recipes from people I know and live around. These are often closely held recipes handed down for generations. Usually they are simple but the most tasty!

I love cookbooks! I love all kinds of cookbooks but the simpler ones work best for me for everyday and having pictures for each recipe is great…I like to see what I’m making and somehow it makes me feel like I can make it, too. I will dust off the more elaborate ones for the holidays and pick several recipes and make them but those only come out at that time of year. I’d love to have these cookbooks!

They are such an amazing slice of life and capture society at interesting

My favorite cookbooks are the local ones, like Junior League or church cookbooks. I love reading recipes that have been loved by others for years and years.
I love recipe books with great pictures. If I can easily see what the color and texture of it is supposed to look like it helps me to see if I’m doing something wrong. I adore cookbooks that have step by step photos. Visual learners appreciate it! Especially if it’s a tricky baking technique!

I love all cookbooks! But the best ones have great pictures, because sometimes you just need to know how its supposed to look.
I like whatever cookbook will give me what I need at the moment, sweet or savory. My current favorite is ‘Cookie Craft’ because I’m doing bunches of cookies, am new at it, and have only had the book 1 week. Other than that, I second the person who said the Internet – that’s where I found the no-fail sugar cookie recipe and Bake at 350′s great royal icing recipe! Thanks!
I love any sort of holiday cookbook. I buy the grocery circulars every year and have way too many of them!
Simple, uncomplicated directions. Even if there are a lot of steps, sometimes it’s worth it, but lay it out plainly an logically. Pictures of what each step should look like are good too. The King Arthur’s Flour website does a nice job of showing how to bake their recipes, but their cookbook had no pictures.

I collect cookbooks. But I only use the practical ones. I personally like the ones that give detail if they are difficult if like the step by step pics so if know if I’m on the right track.

I love to bake, so, obviously, baking cookbooks. I love to look at the pictures and just think about how yummy it’s going to be. Or how pretty it is. I also love pasta, so italian cookbooks are my favorite savory cookbooks. You can never have too much pasta!
My current fav is my Hershey cookbook, all things chocolate! Love pictures, they are a must! Come fall I’m sure I’ll have a new favorite. :)

beautiful photos. My family lives all the recipes I’ve made so far from both cookbooks.

I’ve got a HUGE sweet tooth, so any cookbooks with cookies, cupcakes, whathaveyou are my absolute favorites! Best one I have so far is “101 Things to Do with a Cake Mix.”
My two favorite cookbooks are almost too difficult for me, it takes me a LOT of time to follow the recipes, so it would be awesome to get something that has lots of pictures and is easy to understand. They are called Martha Stewart Cupcakes and Martha Stewart Cookies. I get SO much use out of them, and they are getting a bit old…it would be GREAT to have something new!

I love the old tried-and-true cookbooks but I definitely prefer cookbooks with pictures! I can’t find the motivation to try a recipe that doesn’t have a picture.

I love the 5 ingredients or less cookbooks, or the ones that insists you can make an entire meal in 20 minutes or less, yup those are my kind of cookbooks… now if I could find one that has 5 ingredients or less in 20 minutes or less I’d be in heaven :). My husband is the baker in our family (I cook, he bakes, it works out well for us), I’m sure he would appreciate these much more than me, but in the end I’d happily share with him.

My grandmother’s handwritten recipe book. She’s been writing recipes in it since she was about 12 years old… So that’s now over 70 years of tried and tested gems!

I love any Molly Katzen Cookbooks! I found her Moosewood Cookbok at a thrift store for 0.99 and had to have more! Her recipes are easy, healthy & some books are geared towards kids in the kitchen, which I think is important to get them interested in more than peanut butter – n – Jelly!

I love America’s Test Kitchen Family Cookbook because it gives a lot of little hints and advice along with the recipes. I also like cookbooks that show a lot of pictures, so I know how something is supposed to turn out.
My favorite cookbook is the Campbell’s Soup cookbook. I know, no desserts. however, my husband can make ANY and ALL meals from that cookbook, so I don’t have to cook :) That’s the best ever!

It used to be that my favorite cookbooks were the ones that local churches and PTA’s put out. But I’m a visual person and need the allure of a photo to sell me on a recipe nowadays…so I would have to say that my favorite cookbooks are the ones that have lots of pretty, colorful pictures of the food.

I Love Crock Pot Cookbooks!!
My favorite type of cookbooks are the little promotional cook booklets that came out in the early part of the 20th century. They were generally put out by food or appliance brands, and they often feature really cute artwork and illustrations. And, of course, the recipes were always (usually?) tested by some prestigious institution or famous kitchen. Even if I don’t make anything out of them, they’re such a joy to look at.
My current favorite cookbooks are holiday favorites. Maybe it’s the fact that it’s September and I have a fantasy about hitting the holiday season completely in command of my to-do list — which includes baking!

I love community type cookbooks. You know church, PTA, club type cookbooks. The ones with the tried and true recipes that were passed down from grandmas and favorite aunts. I have way too many of them or not enough of them depending on if you ask me or ask my husband, LOL.
I am a very creative cook so I like the kind of cookbooks that have recipes or ideas that I wouldn’t have thought of myself.
my favourite cookbooks have good general info, not just recipes. I am looking for something that is going to help me become a better cook, not just find a new way to cook mince on a Wednesday night. The recipes that are there should be designed to be read while cooking (too many ‘meanwhile…’s and I’ll be throwing the blasted thing across the room). And of course, somehow it seems to be easier to get confident to try something new when there is a picture.

I love cookbooks with author’s personal stories on how the recipes came about and just look into their lives and a ton of pictures. Rhee’s book for example? Brilliant!! This way I can do my reading and pretend I’m going to cook something at the same time!

I’ve only just recently found your site and I love it, but oh my goodness – you certainly do have a lot of followers! Personally I love the cookbooks that are put out as fundraisers from a church, or an employer, or a school. I think you find so much in those that you don’t find in “professional” books, including tips and such. I especially like trolling thrift stores and finding depression era cookbooks to read, those are especially interesting.
I only have one “dedicated” cookbook and it’s an old Betty Crocker “cookie” book that was my Mom’s and she passed that on to me when I moved out of the house. It’s messy, sticky and well loved, but it’s one of y favorites.

I LOVE holiday cookbooks! My great grandmother lives with us so my boys and I are always baking with her! We make treats all year long but grandma loves making Christmas treats with the boys most and at 6 and 8 they are all about the sugary treats lol! They usually take an hour to look at the pictures in the books and find what they want to make with grandma. I know they would love some new books to look at and pick from. Thanks!

I have two favorites. The one I like most is the one my preschool class wrote with recipes for our favorite foods. It is hilarious. The one I use most is my Betty Crocker cookbook, which has basic recipe for everything. If it’s a common food, you can bet there is a recipe that is delicious as-is and so basic that it can easily be fancied up. My mom got it for me for Christmas a couple of years before she died because she loved her Betty Crocker book so much. It’s my favorite thing in my kitchen, next to my Kitchen Aid mixer. :)

My favorite type of cookbook is one with lots of pictures – preferably one for each recipe. I like to see what it’s supposed to look like before I try it and after so I have something to compare mine to.
I like older cookbooks. Especially my grandmother’s cookbooks from World War I & II. The ideas are simple, classic, and frugal. And they lend themselves to so much experimentation!

My favorite cookbooks are the ones from churches or other local groups. You know that if some old lady has had it for years and thought it was worth submitting, it HAS to be good! Also, I like the winning 4-H recipe books they put together after the kids’ homemaking show!

I love a cookbook that has pictures for everything they’re asking you to make, is simple enough, and explains things in a way that if it’s my first time making something I don’t have to worry about botching it completely. I hate a cookbook that assumes you know how to do something! Picture pique my interest, and they also give me an idea of what to expect.

I LOVE cookbooks with simple recipes. Where we live it’s sometimes hard to find off the wall ingredients so the simpler the better. They also must have lots of pictures! I love the ones that have a picture with every recipe. At least that way I can try to make mine look halfway like it should. :)

I loooooove holiday cookbooks, particularly Christmas ones, so this set would be fab! I like to treat myself to a nice holiday cookbook early on so rather than dwell on the crappy things about Autumn-Winter (rain, cold, dark) I can look forward to pretty things to bake instead! Screw you SAD!!

My favorite cookbooks are the ones about cupcakes! I LOVE cupcakes – it’s like a little mini cake that you can decorate and personalize to fit your personality or a special event! My two favorite cookbooks that I’ve read are Hello, Cupcake! and What’s New, Cupcake? because they both have very creative ideas for decorating cupcakes and have LOTS of pictures!!
Never met a cookbook I didn’t like. However, baking is more of a science, so I love my dessert books! Having the family sweet tooth does not hurt! Let me just say Southern in the title almost always is purchased!

I have more cookbooks than I can count. The one I use the most I probably an old 70′s copy of the Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook. Every recipe has a picture, although some of the recipes are things like salmon mousse and aspic.
My favourite kind of cookbook is a “bakebook” that has a variety of recipes. Creative, weird, classic, easy, and/or not so easy recipes. One that has a ton of pictures, so you know what the end product SHOULD look like, even though it doesn’t always turn out that way. I wish a bunch of bloggers would come together and have each of them make their favourite recipe and then get the book published!!!

My favorite recipes are the contributions given to me through my facebook group “The Social Network Cookbook”. Until last October, I couldn’t have told your what “to cream” something is. I thought I was missing an ingredient. My friends in this group are sharing their family favorites and I am cooking through them. This experience has been challenging, creative and fun and I am so happy to be able to call each and everyone in the group my friend. it is the recipes that have brought us all together. I inherited my love for cooking/cookbooks from my grandmother. When she passed away, I gained about 350 (no kidding) cookbooks to add to my already large collection. Needless to say, I had to pare that down! I read them like novels! I like a variety cookbooks, but pics are a must!
I love cook books with cookies, cupcakes and cookies, but with tons of pictures. I like to see what the final product should look like. I may not always end up with them looking the same but at least I have an idea. And its usually the image that draws me to even look at a recipe in the first place.
I love cookbooks, especially cookie/candy holiday books! But for everyday cooking, the ones I seem to use the most are the local cookbooks from the Lion’s Club or church. I know those are tried and true recipes.

I ADORE cookbooks, you can never have to many. Ina, Giada, Rachel and Nigella, our my Food Network Faves. Right now in heavy rotation at my house right now are: The New Basics, The Silver Palate, Eat Shrink and Be Merry, The Joy of Cooking, Everyday Indian. That doesn’t begin to include the hordes of of favorite magazines……

I love all kinds of cookbooks. Some people buy magazines I buy cookbooks. My favorite in my collection however just happen to be three cookbooks from my Mom. They are from the 1940s and I love cooking up the recipes my Mom and Grandmother cooked for so many years. It makes me smile to think my mom was a young bride when she got these and made meals for my Dad after he returned home from WWII.
I have my favorite/tried and true recipes memorized, but a cookbook with lots of pictures would be fun to just look at. Also one that gives subsitutions if you happen to be out of an ingredient.

My favorite “go to” cookbook is my 1953 Betty Crocker book. A little quirky I know but the recipes are true.
My favorite cookbook is usually one from the church where I am a member. I have my own recipes in there, but there are so many from cooks that I know personally. I can trust that most all of the recipes will be ones that are not too difficult, and also use ingredients I am familiar with. My second choice can be a cookbook that is new to me, but this one would have step-by-step pictures and commentary along with the recipe. I am a visual learner so I love seeing the product during the preparation, as well as the ideal finished product appearance. That is probably why I LOVE your recipe emails!!

I have lots of cookbooks, most of which are seasonal/holiday ones like the little paper booklet ones you get at the register stand. I love mostly simple recipe books with lovely pictures of the result but I do have quite a few older more elaborate cookbooks that I have collected over the years. Even if I don’t get to make the more involved recipes I do love to read them and get ideas and tips for more simple entertaining ideas by figuring out short cut ways of doing them. And it is that time of year already when I start to run through a bunch of them and get my baking list together for the holidays… all my gifts are homemade. :)

I love cookbooks of ALL kinds, but especially my Holiday and cookie / baking cookbooks and books compiled by churches, schools and other organizations. Of course, those with beautiful pictures are always a plus!

Favorite type of cookbook? Honestly I love ALL types of cookbooks & will browse through any & all sorts in search of new delicious-sounding dishes. Although I do prefer cookbooks with color photos of the dish and easy-to-read recipes. I also really love those community or church published cookbooks that are made-up of several cooks who provided their favorite time-tested recipes. Those are almost always wonderful. I collect all types of cookbooks and would certainly love to add these four books to my collection. Got my fingers crossed! :)

I love the cookbooks that have back stories on recipes. Like someone learned the recipe from their crazy grandmother or invented a recipe when their boyfriend dumped them. It makes it feel like you are baking a little piece of them/their soul. in a non creepy way, of course!

I am going to have to have someone put a child lock on sites such as Amazon and Half because I just go crazy… and they need pictures. I don’t make anything unless I have some sort of picture or else I feel like it is a shot in the dark…:p I guess I need to have more faith in the power of recipes…Oh well!

My favorite cookbooks are the ones that I receive as gifts. Whenever my family travels, they always bring back a cookbook for me (instead of a t-shirt!) Then I get the chance to fix some of the local flavor from where they visited. Recently, my mom went on a cruise out of Key West & brought back a cookbook. Since I don’t enjoy seafood (AT ALL) I made all of the side dishes (hushpuppies, coleslaw, etc!!)
I love nice hardback cook books filled with photos and clear instructions. I am a cookbook junkie, so really any type of cookbook is loved in my house!
My favorite cookbooks are the America’s Test Kitchen cookbooks. They do seem to have a lot of “extra” steps or ingredients, like I’m always convinced that I should cut corners and use ALL whole milk instead of the mixture of whole milk and half-and-half that they suggest. For some reason, though, their recipes are consistently the best of the best and I love their cookbooks.

I always love a little “devotional reading,” as my Mom would say, but pictures are great. And any cookbook with sticky pages, because that means it’s been loved. I love your blog for recipes (and fun) too!
Okay, so I cant pick ONE type of cookbook I love them all…hard back, soft back, magazine, appetizers to desserts, they are all wonderful. The thing I do look for is the ingrediants that are used. If there are exoctic ones that I will never be able to find in Wyoming or will never be able to afford…then it is a no go for me. And pictures….I love pictures and would prefer to see what I am making, even though mine never turns out nearly as pretty!.
I am addicted to cookbooks and read them cover to cover like a good novel. My favorite are probably the church type where a bunch of ladies contributed. It seems everyone puts forward a favorite tried and true recipe for delicious results!
My favorite cookbook is my mom. Whenever I need to know a recipe or want to make sure I am cooking something just right I can always count on mom to know what I need to add just by making a phone call.

I love cookbooks. I love when they have beautiful full color photos on every recipe page. Its always so weird for me to see black and white photos in cookbooks. I know its cheaper to manufacture but maaaan does it take away the yum factor when flipping through the book!

It sounds crazy but my favorite cookbook is an old Betty Crocker that belonged to grandma, the hard cover is about to fall off, but I love the recipes, my go-to for cookies, banana bread, and cakes or brownies from scratch, which I rarely make but when I do they are always perfect.

My favorite kinds of cookbooks are ones with photos! I don’t have the time/patience to read through a recipe to see if it sounds good… I need to know it LOOKS good! I also love cookbooks that tell you how much time it takes to prep and cook the dish so I can plan accordingly and so I know if it is more of a weekend kind of meal or a weekday meal. Most Williams-Sonoma cookbooks are great but they don’t all meet both of these criteria. The Everyday Food cookbooks are fantastic!!
I am totally with you – simple and quick are my favorite types of recipes. Recipes that can be made any day of the week and don’t require tons of crazy ingredients that I have to run out and find. Love your blog!

I like cookbooks that are all recipes from a certain type of food- italian, creole, all seafood recipes, low fat. I like knowing I can go to one book for a whole genre of recipes…and then I can take things from the recipes and mix them up (like the spices from one with the cooking technique of another).

I love ALL cookbooks! Where some women buy shoes or jewelry, I buy cookbooks or magazines with recipes that catch my eye! I have a favorite cookbook, but not a favorite type, although I use baking cookbooks more often. I experiment more with cooking, but don’t like to take too many risks with baking. I also enjoy pictures and/or step by step instructions to see if what I make comes out anywhere near close.

I love the cookbook my mom put together for me. Some of it has been typed and organized, but most of it just has random scribbled recipes stuck all throughout it. I love my disorganized, crazy cookbook of tried and tested recipes. It’s like the elite of recipes; only the really good ones get stuffed in that binder.

Favorite cookbooks are ones with details about the recipe prior to the recipe. (America’s Test Kitchen is great for this. I like a cookbook that reads like a science and history textbook!)

The best cookbooks are those passed down through generations. I have one that is practically duct taped together and has writing in the margins, but some of the recipes are almost extinct and I love to pull them out for a dinner party.

I love cookbooks that give you ideas that you can run with, for example, I love when they show you how to do a technique on a cupcake or cake and you can do something like change the color and make it something totally different. I’m all about stretching the almighty buck lately and when you can get more than one project out of the same material…I’m game!

My favorite are baking cookbooks…since there is such a delicate science to it, I like to have recipes to follow that I know will work. Everything else is just a pinch of this, dash of that, and cookbooks aren’t an absolute necessity (though, of course, I own many, and do use them!!).

My favorite kind of cookbooks are the ones compiled by churches or small communities. The Crab Creek Cacklers Cookbooks from my tiny hometown community were always amazing, as were the St. Michael’s Altar Society books. Love them!
I really enjoy seasonal cookbooks. I get tired of making the same things all the time so I like to be able to add in a spring salad or fall pumpkin bar for example. I don’t get excited about any cookbook though that doesn’t have illustrations. I always like to know how it’s supposed to turn out.
I like the Betty Crocker cookbooks. I have a new one and one tat is 20 years old it’s fun to see how the recepies have changed with peoples tastes and focus on health. Butter, lard and sugar are all over the old ones. Whereas the new one have olive oil(Popeye was right she is such a lovely gal), and light fare.
I love all cookbooks, but especially something that can go from month to month, in all types of season, from kids parties to easy family dinners. I enjoy following pictures, so I have an idea of what it needs to look like, and I LUV trying to figure out how the inspiration for the recipe came to the author….why aren’t we all so gifted :)

There are 2 types of cookbooks I like. The ones that I use all the time, with easy quick family style recipes. These books are used often and get pretty worn looking, and sometimes they fall apart, so they are kept hidden in a cupboard. The 2nd type have pretty covers and go on display on the cupboard tops of my kitchen. The best cookbooks are the ones that combine both practical and beauty and they get a home on my cookbook stand in the middle of my kitchen. How is that for a thorough description?

I love cookbooks, of any kind! The ones I use the most are either the Better Crocker red book (that thing is magic, I tell you), or one that is very special to me: a compilations of all my grandmother’s best recipes. My grandma was a knock-out cook, and I love pulling out that little cookbook and flipping through it to find one that reminds me of her. When my house is filled with wonderful smells and I serve the food to my family, it’s kind of like having my grandma back for a little while. :)

I heart cookbooks to the point of I need a new shelf for them. But the one holding a special place in my heart would be ‘Hello Cupcake’ because it got me started in the cupcake world.

My favorite cookbook every I got from my grandma from “way back when.” It is a book that teaches your to bake bread, from scratch… without a recipe. It teaches the principals of baking, gives you a list of basic rules and a load of ideas. Now, I can bake whatever kind of bread you want without even looking at a book. That is why I love classic cook books and anything to do with baking. :)
I love cookbooks that are fun and creative and have colorful pictures that make my mouth water and drive me to make what is in the picture!!! I love to have my family try new things and food from different cultures around the world. I love having cookbooks that help me create those fun adventures.

I love all cookboks….but cake cookbooks the most. When I get a new cookbook I can’t wait to get home and sit on the couch and read, read, read until I get to the end, and then start all over again. I would love to win the books, but I will be happy for whoever wins. Soooooooo, good luck everyone.
Reading/owning cookbooks is one of my favorite pastimes. My favorites are the ones with good writing and great stories. The kind that make you want to curl up on the couch with a cup of tea and blanket and dig in. I love anything using fresh, real ingredients– farm-to-tables types. I also love baking cookbooks.
I like cookbooks with simple ingredients and gorgeous pictures, so that I can make sure my creation turns out just as beautiful :)

I love good ole southern church cookbooks with family recipies in them. Love to know and read the stories behind the recipies.
My favorite type of cookbook has a combination of simple and more complex recipes. And my FAVORITE include any type of recipe for desserts as they are the best for baking and sharing!
I love buying cookbooks of local recipes when we travel. The Jr League or Humane Society or church ladies generally have some of the best groceries around and the cookbooks make wonderful souveniers.
I Love Cookbooks that include camping meals! I love to go camping and a cookbook that is specified for campers that includes breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack menus are awesome !! There are so many recipes that can be made at home and at the campground but finding a compilation of all of them is very difficult to find.
My favorite kind of cookbook is a FREE one!!! Pick me, Pick me!!! OK, for real now (well I am for real, I do love free) anyway, I love desert books but I like quick and simple ones but not real traditional stuff. If I can’t dress it up and make it look like it came out of a bakery it’s not coming out of my kitchen!!!!
I have only recently joined the “cooking world” and I can’t tell you how happy I am to finally be apart of it! My grandmother was a big baker living on a farm in Iowa. I have a lot of her old recipes… honestly nothing beats the cookbooks that are collected and passed down throughout the years. HOWEVER! Seeing that lard is no longer a common item at the grocery store, I’m turning more towards online blogs and now… cookbooks! I’m loving dessert cook books and I am OBSESSED with cupcakes right now! My fav cookbooks are always related to a theme. I have a really awesome “Fall” cookbook, a cookbook for holidays, a Halloween cookbook, and a cupcake cookbook with tons of baking and frosting tips. I also use your wonderful website as a cookbook :-)
I love the simple old fashion cookbooks from the 40′s and earlier, along with the local church/fund raising types. I have about 60 cookbooks myself. To my husbands dismay I am always on the look out to add more.

My favorite cookbook would have to be….well, one with recipes of course. I love any kind of cookbooks and have many, but, I always seem to find room for more. I do enjoy a cookbook that has a picture of the prepared food so you get an idea of how the recipe should turn out. I think my husband thinks I’m crazy because I really enjoy sitting down at night and looking through recipes and deciding what to try next.
