GooGoo Clusters
Remember last week when I was all, “wah wah I had a nervous breakdown and wasted a perfectly good sandwich worrying that I’m a bad mom blah blah blah”??
Well.
I was still under the influence of the guilt and shame that inevitably comes with motherhood when I agreed to take my son to an afternoon showing of The Smurfs in 3D.
Because nothing says “I love you, I’m a good mother, I’m totally worthy of raising a small human person” like seeing a cute childhood cartoon made not only creepy and lifelike on the big screen, but also in 3D, thus raising the creep factor by like seventeen thousand.
And it had been so long since we had seen a 3D movie that I had totally forgotten about how the glasses bother me. But about ten minutes in, they were seriously cutting into my face.
I realize that I’m not all engineerical, but from what I could gather, there is a flat part right above the nose thing that creates a sharp little corner. The way the glasses sit on my face, the sharp part stabs right between the bridge of my nose and where my forehead starts.
It was so painful and uncomfortable that I thought perhaps I had grabbed a bad pair of glasses. I tried my son’s pair, but no such luck. They were still stabbing me in the face, torturing me with their futuristicness.
I began scanning the theater, looking for someone, ANYONE, who seemed to be in similar discomfort.
Not. A. Soul.
And I finally came to the only conclusion that one can reach in such a situation.
I have a deformed face.
My features are misshapen.  Odd.   Un-normal humanish.
Distraught, I shared my findings with my husband later that evening. And although he tried to disagree with me, I kept reminding him that 3D inventor people are very high-tech. It’s the wave of the FUTURE after all!! Surely they did countless weeks, months, years, of research, designing glasses that would fit the faces of moviegoers. OBVIOUSLY, I am an anomaly.
Kristan “weirdface” Roland.
Frustrated with the conversation, my husband finally began to retreat upstairs, claiming that “3D movies are overrated anyways”.
I was all, “THEY ARE THE FUTURE and my misshapen face is holding me BACK!! I guess I’ll just hang out with Laura Ingalls with my weird face and sew or spin shiny pennies”.
That’s the part of the conversation where my husband finally decided to go watch TV and contemplate a time when he first married me and he thought I was normal and I didn’t threaten to hang out with dead pioneer wilderness people.
Anyways, now that I’ve discovered that I have a weird face and I have to be old-timey, I decided to make some old timeyish candy.
That makes sense, right?
I always see these GooGoo Clusters when I go to Cracker Barrel for breakfast. They look so yummy!! But not the cheapest of candies. But guess what?! Super easy and inexpensive to make at home.
Good news all around!!
INGREDIENTS
3 dozen flat marshmallows (they’re called StackerMallows and they can be found at Wal Mart with all the other marshmallows)
11 oz bag caramel bits (you could also just use a bag of unwrapped caramels, they just take much longer to melt)
2 TBS heavy cream
2 1/2 cups lightly salted, roasted peanuts
32 oz chocolate almond bark/candy coating
Set your marshmallows on a sheet of wax paper. In a microwave safe bowl, melt caramel bits and heavy cream for about 2 minutes or until smooth and melted, stopping to stir every 15 seconds. Working 3 at a time, spoon/spread caramel over top of marshmallows and immediately top with peanuts, pressing in gently. Once all marshmallows are topped with caramel and peanuts, let set for about 30 minutes or until caramel is firm.Â
Melt chocolate according to package directions and coat candies generously, placing back on wax paper to harden.
Isn’t that one of the easiest things you’ve heard of in your life? I know candy is more of a winterey thing, but in this heat, I am all about the no-bake recipes.
If you need me, I’ll be in my room. Eating old timey candy and spinning shiny pennies.
With my weird face.
Have a wonderful day!! Thanks for stopping by!!

Thanks for visiting my blog! I realize you could be doing more important things with your time. Like watching the news or washing socks. I hope you stay awhile. Much more fun than socks, I promise.

I wouldn’t feel so bad, the 3D glasses are creepy and awkward. Besides – if they’re so “high tech” why in the blazes haven’t they been able to come up with a way to make a 3D movie you can view without ridiculously honky glasses?
amiright?

aww I’m sorry that the glasses cut into your face. They don’t cut into mine, but they do give me headaches. Maybe it was bothering other people, they just were pretending it didn’t :)

I bought a bag of those stackers and now I know what I need to do with them. Glad to know I am not the only wife that has conversations with her husband that makes him retreat and shake his head in disbelief. These are important issues!

I don’t think you and Laura Ingalls would be friends. I mean, she wears bonnets and all. No sparkly Converse for Laura.
And 3D glasses stink. The movie is not better in 3D. If I wanted to watch 3D I would sit on my porch and watch the world, much like Lura Ingalls would…and really, who wants to do that when there are Real Housewives to watch?

Surely bonnets do not make for good hair days. You have a valid point, friend.
I always see goo-goo clusters at cracker barrel too! Great recipe. Love it!
PS. Misshapen, weird or otherwise – you have a cute face. :)

Um that sharp part totally cuts my face! And I never got into thinking about why because I was too busy laughing to myself about how geeky hubby looked in his. But now I guess I should have realized it sooner… I just don’t do the whole pioneer people thing because I like running water, and cable, and true blood, and my microwave! Oh and these goo goo clusters! YUM!!

I HATE 3-D movies and glasses. I wear glasses everyday and find that wearing another pair of glasses on top of the ones that I need to wear to you know, see is really annoying. I feel your pain!
I truly hate 3D glasses. I wear glasses as it is, so the dual glasses are annoying, uncomfortable and often make me sick. And really, the people who invented 3D glasses did so way back in the 80′s for Muppet Vision and Captain EO, so how much can they know? It was the 80′s. I think that’s really all that needs to be said.
As for icky hats, check out the adorableness ones of Clockwork Couture (don’t look at the prices. Just the hats). I’m totally not into wearing hats, but when I see the adorable mini top hats and bowlers I WANT.
And also, I am even more annoyed now that my local stores don’t carry the flat marshmallows. And I don’t have kids to squish them for me.
Uggg… I can’t stand 3D glasses… or movies! I guess the glasses are somewhat better than the ones back in the 80′s… the cheap paper kind. Your candies look so delish… I think I’ll make them and sneak them into the theater the next time my kids want to see a 3D movie (because that’s, like, all the time). They’ll make it all better : )

This recipe also sounds genius! :) Adding it to my “make these” file for the next time I want something amazing!! Thanks!!

Your posts always give me a sweets craving:) LOVE these!
I absolutely HATE 3D glasses! The plastic seam cuts into my face and my mom and sister think I’m absolutely ridiculous! I’m so glad I found someone else who has the same problem! I can’t wait to try these delicious looking treats! :)
I absolutely hate 3D movies. First off, movies are already expensive. But if I have to pay an extra $3-4 dollars for 3D, I should be able to keep those horrid uncomfortable glasses! Do they clean them in between people wearing them?! And seriously, everytime I go to a 3D movie, something pops out, I freak out and people get annoyed at me.
I feel your pain, as I have a weird shaped head. You know those stretchy headbands that wrap around your head and make you look all sporty and whatnot? I can’t wear those… true story. As soon as I put them on, they start sliding towards the top of my head until they reach a point where they spring off my head and fling themselves across the room. What’s a girl to do? Guess I’ll just have to eat sugary food and buy some sparkly stuff to console myself. :)
I hate 3D goggles too. Totally brutal. These sound lovely! Yum!

I seriously love your site, you crack me up! :) And I would want to hang out with laura ingalls wilder whether 3D glasses fit or not, so at least there’s that. :)

I cant believe you made this candy SO easy! Now I HAVE to try it! :)
Haha, I love the conclusions you have made! I hate 3D glasses and movies as well, and I agree with your husband on those 3D movies are overrated. Nowadays my kids wouldn’t watch a movie if it is NOT 3D…I wonder how we grew up without these :).
3-D glasses are NOT our friends . . . they pinch, they hurt, they make me think bad words . . . which is NOT what i think about when i’m staring longingly at these goo-goo clusters . . . sigh . . .

Those glasses kill my nose too, plus give me a migraine beyond belief! So although they may be the wave of the future theyare not for this chick. I will get in my Dolorian and nip that notion in the bud. :O) My mom always made candies like this but added chunky peanut butter with marshmallow and caramel. As always your the best ,you weird faced girl of awesomeness. :O)
Sounds very yummy.

Dear Wierdface – you are not alone. I cannot watch 3D movies for just that reason! Sadly, I don’t think there is any amount of Mommy guilt that would get me to sit through the Smurfs in 3D. Only thing worse than that would be that purple dinosaur!
Love GooGoo Clusters and yours look great! Can’t wait to try them!

I was having such a bad day, but your horrid experience with the 3-D glasses and grotesquely fullscreen sized Smurfs has definitely made me feel so ashamed for ever feeling the least bit depressed about my poor little life!
BTW, those glasses give me a headache, so I too feel the pain of being left behind in the progress of the techno world.
I am leaving now to find those cool stacker mallows that I have NEVER seen at my Walmart! That’s as progressive as I need to get…
LOL ok so aside from the fact that those look AMAZING and I want to leave work and go home to make them immediately…..i ALSO HATE 3D MOVIES!! I must have a weird face/head too…those glasses hurt, they give me a headache, and the “awesome” 3D effects are so not worth it. I’ll join you on the prairie….I’ll bring my butter churn
Flat marshmallows are the first good reason I have ever had to visit Walmart!
Fabulous! I love goo-goo clusters….and you’re not mis-shapen! You are a snowflake – unique and wonderful!

My face must be deformed, too, because if the 3D glasses aren’t cutting into something they’re sliding off my face and I literally have to spend the whole movie holding them on.
I love coming here. You are so funny and your food looks amazing! One of the happy, cyber spaces to be :-)

These look so good. Love your blog – so many great ideas to try!!
