Just wanted to thank you all again for your help, whether it be by donations, prayer, or just helping spread the word. I am a firm believer in “what goes around comes around”, and I just know that you all have tons of awesome things coming your way!
Thanks also to Bloggers Without Borders. They raised money as well and donated $1060 to my tornado fund. I am without words, truly.
I recently gave my husband’s uncle a check from part of what I raised to help with expenses. He wanted me to pass this along:
I just wanted to tell you what a blessing it was today to receive money from you and your blog followers. I have seen more generosity these last six days than I have the entire rest of my life. It’s hard to understand why someone a thousand miles away would care about my family and our situation, but you do, and I am humbled to be on the receiving end. I don’t know who the donors are, but I trust that our Heavenly Father does and that you will be blessed because of your hospitality. Please pass this message on as a thank you! Your gift will go a long way in recovery during this difficult time.

Thanks again for everything. I will never be able to thank you all enough.
I know that most of you are probably sick of hearing about tornadoes.
Really, I don’t blame you. I sort of am too.
But we’re friends, you and I. And the thing about friends is, they talk about stuff.
So here it is.
Around midnight last night, while my son, husband and I squished up under a mattress in my hallway, a tornado caused this destruction about five minutes up the road in Etna, Arkansas.
Trees were uprooted, homes were leveled, and my uncle-in-law (is that a real thing?) lost his carpet store.
The tornado then made it’s way to Denning, another very small, rural community, where it continued to destroy everything in it’s path. When everything was said and done, there were people trapped in their homes, injured people with nowhere to go, and a few others who were not so lucky.
When we emerged from under the mattress and heard the weatherman say that Etna and Denning were leveled, it was truly devastating. Most of our loved ones live in those communities, and we couldn’t help but immediately fear the worst.
Thankfully, they were all okay. We were truly blessed in that regard.
Living in a rural area is particularly dangerous during a tornado for several reasons, the main one being that you cannot hear the tornado sirens that are going off in town. So if your power goes out, or you are asleep, a bad situation can sneak up on you very quickly. Even if you DO learn that the sirens are going off, you are usually too far from the nearest tornado shelter to make it there in time.
Denning and Etna are both small, close knit communities, and there have been tons of volunteers and food donations. Unfortunately, there are still people who are unable to reunite with family members due to the obstructions in the road.
It’s just a giant mess. And looking at it overwhelms me with helplessness.
But today as my husband’s aunt handed me a wet pile of family quilts and choking back tears, asked me to wash them before they got mildew and ruined, I knew I had to find my own way to help.
Really, it could have been me.
And so I got to thinking about what I could do.
I don’t have big muscles to cut downed trees with chainsaws. (plus, lets face it–I really hate the outdoors, that will never change)
I don’t have any house building skills.
Also, I’m not a genie who can make everything magically back to normal (but dude that would be so cool).
But–I DO have this blog. And a huge, supportive community of readers and bloggers who care.
So as much as I hate to ever ask for anything, I am asking you to help if you can.
I know some of you have probably already donated to Joplin, or Red Cross, or the Japan Earthquakes, or a million other disasters that have been going on. And if you have nothing left to give, or just don’t want to give, that’s totally fine. I understand.
But this is where I live, and I just have to ask. If you have anything at all, I would truly appreciate it, and so would the tornado survivors in Etna and Denning. I plan on making sure that the money goes directly to local efforts and helping provide the survivors with what they need.
To thank you for your help, I have managed to round up a few very generous prizes. And by donating, you will have a chance to win one of them!!
To donate, just click the Chip In link on the widget above. For every $5 donation you make, please leave a comment letting me know. This will count for one giveaway entry. If you donate $15 for instance, you need to leave 3 entry comments. Please leave an email address with at least one of your entries so I can find you if you win.
Le Creuset generously donated their new Farmfresh Steamer Set. This set is gorgeous, high quality, and will steam your food PERFECTLY. It also retails for $185.
Plus, it’s Le Creuset. What else do you need?
Chicago Metallic kindly donated two 9 inch commercial grade 9″ round cake pans. These pans are top quality and will last you forevah. And everyone will love you when you make them cakes with them. The retail value for two pans is $36.
Did you know that Chicago Metallic is also a sponsor of the Share Our Strength National Bake Sale? Awesome, high quality products + generous = one of my favorites.
Debbie Tortorigi from Lagniappe Press donated a $50 Target gift card.
She’s such a good woman, and truly wants to help. She is also awesome at web hosting/design. Just sayin’.
**UPDATE: I am SO very proud to announce that an avid blog reader in the earthquake prone Pacific Northwest was kind enough to donate this $25 Amazon gift card to the giveaway. (thank you!!)
***UPDATE: In addition to contributing money to the tornado fund, Jamie from My Baking Addiction has also generously donated a copy of Plate to Pixel by Helene Dujardin (of the blog Tartlette). It is a gorgeous photography book and is already one of Jamie’s favorites. Thank you so very much for your generosity Jamie!
**UPDATE: I was contacted by a sweet blogging friend of mine (who wishes to remain anonymous) who wants to donate a new, still in the box factory reconditioned Blentec Blender, valued at $400. This blender, is EXTREMELY high quality and comes with an extra canister and recipe books. This would be an awesome addition to anyone’s kitchen and is a very generous donation.
**UPDATE: The super sweet Ruthanne of Eclectic Whatnot has donated The Glinda version of her ruffled camera strap covers to the donation prize pool. (I like to think that she chose the Glinda because it reminded her of me ;) ) Thank you so so very much for your generosity, Ruthanne!!
I will draw winners on Wednesday, June 1st using Random.org and announce them here on my blog. I will draw the first prize first, and so on down the list until I have chosen a winner for each prize.
After donating and leaving a comment, you can get an extra entry by tweeting this giveaway. Just tweet I donated to @bakescupcakes tornado fund and was entered to win a prize http://su.pr/3tZGxs and leave a comment letting me know.
If you prefer not to enter but would like to send a card or an email to the survivors or have another type of donation, please email me at cookbook-queen@hotmail.com. And if you have any items you’d like to offer to add to the giveaway, that would be great too. Any and all types of support would be truly appreciated and treasured.
Thank you so much for always being a bright spot in my day. Please continue to keep those who are in the path of these storms tonight and tomorrow in your thoughts.

Hey Kristan,
such awful photos, I'm so glad you and your family are safe.
Sorry I couldn't donate more!
Sending you love and hugs from England.x
Kristan,
As soon as I saw the Chip-In button, I was ready to donate. I've used this means for donating many times. It's nice for you to offer a prize for donating, but that wasn't my intent. We've had means to donate for the devastation last month here in Alabama. It's just absolutely surreal all that are hurting in our country from tornadoes and flooding in the last couple of months.

so glad that you are OK. I live in rural, northern Alabama and was very thankful to have a weather radio for our day of tornadoes on April 28 (I was in the closet 6 times throughout the course of the day). If you live in a rural area and can't hear sirens, I would HIGHLY recommend a weather radio that alerts of any tornadoes in the area.
Praying for all of you and yours Kristan!
I wish I could jump in my truck and head out there to help!
I'd bring a chain saw too.
And some water for all the hard workers.
And a big hug for you! Thanks for doing this!
Kristan, post number 1 and I sent you a comment on the donation itself…i hope you actually get to read it.

Kristan,
We're in Barling, just west of you all, and my husband has family in Denning; we were right there with you in hiding last night as it went over us and on to destroying ya'lls area :( I am glad your family is safe!! May God continue to watch over all of us and protect us from harm! XOXO!!
And to Anonymous.. I'm sorry to hear about your family's loss! If she was the one whose young daughter was found later today a ways from her… Praise God your cousin was found alive! May God give you all a sense of peace in the days to come.

We moved from the Pacific Northwest to just outside Wichita almost three years ago. I hate the storms. They scare the bajeezus out of me. I have a friend (that I met in Portland, OR) who lives in Joplin and it is heartbreaking to see everything that your community and so many others are going through. If any of my comments (10 total) are chosen for a prize please donate the prize to someone local. They are amazing prizes and I am thankful for a chance to "win" but I think someone there could use it more than I can.
Sending your family and friends love and prayers over the next weeks and months. Erin

Praying for these communities, and for your loved ones… Great effort!
Living here in Newfoundland, Canada I cannot even begin to imagine what it must be like to experience a tornado, an earthquake or major flooding!!!! Here in Canada there are alot of flooding issues out in the Prairie provinces and then there was a major fire out in Slave Lake (The prairies) that flattened a large portion of that town. We had a bad hurricane (Hurricane Igor) last September. We didn't get much damage, but other parts of the island were hammered terribly.
I am glad to hear you and your family are safe and sound and I hope these terrible tornadoes end very very soon!!!!! I do know that weather system is heading here to the Atlantic provinces by the weekend, but we will only get the wind and rain.
I just sent my donation.
i really felt for your husband's aunt and her quilts. As a quilter I know how treasured quilts can be. In fact I am curled up under one here right now. I hope they can be saved. Thankfully those you know who were affected are safe.

You are so generous!!
I didn't realize you were from Arkansas. My husband's family lives in Booneville which I think is rather close to Etna. I feel so terrible that these tornadoes whipped through. I didn't even know about it, and I just talked to the in-laws today! I would LOVE to donate some money to help your community! But the widget is not working for some reason so there is nothing to click on. I will check back. Blessings on you and your family, and thank God your home was spared.
This is so devastating! I'm sending my prayers!
Many blessings and much love to all who've suffered from this disaster! my email is duckchick1@gmail.com

Kristan, I love your enormous heart.
I can't remember a time when tornadoes were this bad in the southern US. We had one recently that barely missed us. Hearing the windows and doors rattle, and the enormous hail that completely ruined our roof and siding – I have never been so scared – but we got off easy. Praying for all touched by the devastation.
So glad that your loved ones are okay! xo
God Bless
Wish I could do more
Kristan – that was a really lovely thing to do for your town. I agree with Post #2 and pretty much everyone else.
I just found your blog the other day and subscribed, but you are truly in my heart. You and yours will be in my prayers as well. Know that you're not alone, we're here for you!

We had a small tornado–guess after this week I should say "tiny tornado"–skirt our house years ago. That was scary enough. I cannot comprehend what is happening there.
What a great thing you've done.
Let's hope this is the end of bad weather for a long time. Praying for all whose lives are changed forever.
I lived in Arkansas when I was little. I remember what these tornados are like. I'm happy I could help in a small way. Praying for you and all your friends and loved ones. :)
I am so sorry for your community tragedy. Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers.

it is so heartbreaking to see the damage caused by these spring tornadoes, especially since the warning is just a few minutes. here in the houston area we have days notice on hurricanes and can somewhat prepare for them, even that nasty one called ike. i think it is the shock factor that is so hard for everyone to get a grip on with tornadoes.
thank you so much for the efforts on assisting those who need it most in your community. they are truly lucky to count you as a neighbor and friend. i wish i could have donated more, but what i was able to donate will buy water and ice for the cleanup crews. stay safe and by all means, keep blogging because you crack me up.

I can only imagine how horrific it must be for all those lives affected by the tornadoes and find some comfort in knowing that the support and outpouring of aid to the Red Cross for all the communities is coming in quickly. Your efforts to help those within your own community is commendable and a reminder that there is always a way to extend a caring hand to those in need. Tweeting and praying that you surpass your expectations. May you and your loved ones remain safe throughout.

I've a new follower of your blog and have been happily baking along with you! However, when I saw this donation post, my heart broke and I knew I had to help. I hope you and those you love are all safe and I hope there is a huge weather turnaround for all those living in the affected areas.

Kristan,
Thanks for fixing this. :) I am glad you and your family are safe. We have family in Fayetteville so all those storms make us nervous.

So sorry to hear about this. We had a tornado go through a residential area up here in Minneapolis, MN last weekend. Scary stuff…. Sad stuff… Wish I could help more!

I'm praying for all of you…
I was happy to donate (wish it could be more) but don't want *my* name in the the prize giveaway! If my name should win, I'd like to donate it to one of the tornado victims in Arkansas!
Thank you!
I absolutely enjoyed reading this article. I live in Ozark and happened accross your article and realized the Lanes were photographed on here! They’ve been such a help to the organization I work with – by helping us raise money for outreaches, i.e. Donkey Drop (=
I am in the proccess of writing my home church in Florida about your Tornado – hoping to raise some more financial relief for you all.
Would you mind if I used a couple exerpts from your blog as well your blog link? Perhaps there will be more donations?
Hoping you’re having a wonderful day~
Rebecca
